  1. So, back to my original question. Why when I search both times through GC.com, one by "hide and seek a cache" by zipcode, or..., search zip code on notification page do I get a different result? Both by zipcode, both through GC.com, two different results. Two different programs? Why would that be?
  2. I guess this question is really to GC.com but thought I'd throw it out here. When I search for caches by town I get one baseline, and when I search by zip code I get another. I understand the difference and why. But, on a cache I did recently the instructions were to go to my profile and through the notifications page search by zip code. Voila, a third baseline! What gives? PS The town is Randolph, MA. The zip is 02368. The cache is GC2QM0Z.
  3. How 'bout this for a hint? "The biggest hint is to be careful parking. If you don't have a big truck or four wheeler, check the driveway, it gets washed out often. With the difficulty this high-no hints." This was for a 4.5/3 multi. So, I'm at the final and need a hint. I decrypt the hint and get no help, but find out that I need a tow truck to get my car out of the parking area. As this was a state highway where parking on the road is prohibited, the only parking choice was the obvious area accessable by a, not wsahed out, steep gravel path. This turned out to be impossible to drive out of due to the combination of steep and loose. Thanks to the cache owner for the heads up after I'm in trouble.
  4. This dad loves the cold weather, it’s invigorating, the eleven year old, not so much. She was more gun-ho a few years ago. We even went on a three-mile hunt in a snowstorm, had a blast. I agree with previous posts about no bugs, no heat, no canopy, dressing for early morning then being too hot later, no mud. I will add that frozen lakes (not now and make sure they’re really frozen when the time comes) make for some great shortcuts and beelines. We’ve done some multis and some numbers runs where they’ve really come in handy. One word of warning about cold weather caching, It gets dark really early this time of year (December 10 is the earliest sunset of the year). Be prepared for this. Lost in the woods after dark is one thing, lost after dark in the cold can be life threatening.
  5. Thanks for the answer, sportside. That is the answer but as I suspected that line in the menu is non-existent (not grayed out but non-existent). I know it existed before. Now what? .....Anyone?
  6. Thanks gallet, that worked. Any answers to the goto line and the lock on roads questions?
  7. I've looked through all the menus (I think) and read through the on-line manual and cannot find how to change the individual colors of the track lines (bread crumbs) and the line that points me in the direction of the cache on the map page. I remember setting these things in the begining but am lost now. I have the tracks set as blue but they conflict with rivers and I want to contrast them. Also I've seen the lock on road feature on the unit but now referencing the manual it's not where it's supposed to be or, in fact, anywhere. Possibly something wrong with the unit?
  8. When we first started it wouldn't remember us either. Then we figured out that you have to close the page without logging out. Once you log out you're unidentifiable. Could that be the problem?
  9. I too have loaded the newest software. I've only used trackback once and not on this unit. I usually just navigate with the breadcrumbs if I have the need. I'll try out trackback in the next couple of days and post my results.
  10. I loaded the newest download to my Venture HC (I don't remember the #, I think it was 2.7, but it was two steps up from the existing software) and have not seen the problem since. All scenarios, all temperatures.
  11. toyotatechman, Please post when you get the problem resolved as my Venture HC is doing it regularly now. If a replacement will fix it I'll make sure I'll send it in. Thanks, Me and my dad
  12. Forget about my previous post. It did it to me today in spite of my hold the button answer. It was left in a 35 degree car when it did it but it worked fine all week when it was left in a 5 degree car. I'm not really concerned about the problem though as both times it happened a power down-power up cycle fixed it.
  13. Same thing happened to me with my brand new Venture HC. My answer was to hold the power-on button on past the power up screen 'till I hear the opening beep. Never had it happen again since I started holding the button. I have since changed to Ray-O-Vac hybrids but was using Ray-O-Vac alkalines at the time.
  14. OK, here's the deal. I presently use a Legend(B&W) with a serial connection and run EasyGPS. All is fine, no issues. I am planning to upgrade to an H chip with a USB connection and give the Legend to my child. Will I be able to load waypoints to both units? I tested adding a new unit to EasyGPS(picked the Venture HC as this will probably be the new unit) the only connection option it would give me was serial. Thanks in advance for any advice
  15. Okay, let me get this all straight. My basic Etrex Legend(B&W) is acting up and I am going to replace it. I love it and know it intimately. I'm also maybe the cheapest/most frugal person on earth. I don't need all the extra bells and whistles. Is everyone saying I should buy the Venture HC, in spite of my frugality, and not just replace the Legend, same for same? Will it be the most cost effective use of my money? Are there other, better choices? Let the replies fly.
  16. Thanks for the advice, Harriet and the Jester. Off we go.
  17. Thanks for the advice. Didn't realize it was so simple. Also, sorry for the mispelling of the town. I know better but was rushing.
  18. Bostonians on vacation. We're cruising the inside passage next week and need recomendatios for quick grab and run caches from the cruise ship pier in Prince Rupert. Mom the muggle thinks we won't have time to cache. Any help is appreciated.
  19. Bostonians on vacation. We're cruising the inside passage next week and need recomendations for quick grab and runs from the cruise ship peir in Skagway, Juneau, and Prince Rupert to pad our out of state numbers. Mom the muggle thinks we won't have time to cache. Any help is appreciated.
  20. AOL user here. No watchlist or new caches for the last 24 hours.
  21. Yes, when I unselected auto DST I found other options. That fixed it. Thanks to all. The time-space continuem is now synched.
  22. Maybe I should clarify. It used to be correct. It knew I was in the Eastern time zone. I think you tell it what time zone you're in in the settings or profile or something. Now it's wrong. I know I had to lie about the time in various applications during the DST changeover but that's long gone. I figured everything would fix by now.
  23. Is it just me or is this happening to everyone? The times for each thread and at the bottom of the main page are off by an hour. I checked my settings, logged off and back on, came in through GC.com but it's still off. I know that DST was different this year but we're past that. Help.
  24. I had a problem with my Legend just prior to Christmas and thought that emailing Garmin would be the most expeditious way to go since most businesses are so busy this time of year. Garmin warned me that it could take up to a week for a reply. After waiting for what turned out to be no reply I called them. After two menu choices, to my surprise, a real person answered immediately. I explained my problem and they transferred me to another department. Again to my surprise they answered immediately. Although it was under warranty, I had no proof of purchase. They repaired it under warranty anyway. Moral of the story: Garmin is fantastic! Just don’t bother emailing. Go straight to the telephone.
  25. Figuring I would wait forever on the phone, I emailed them in mid December about a problem with my Legend. Their form said they were very busy and that it could take up to a week for a reply. After waiting maybe five days, I called them. I got right through, and was passed back and forth between departments instantly and effortlessly. It was a great experience. Never did get an email reply, though.
