  1. I too have this problem with printing maps from my Mac. I can only print a thin strip of the desired map and it's not enough to be useful. This is a fairly recent problem for me since up until a few weeks ago I was able to print maps from my Mac without any issues. I can print from a PC but it is not convenient to do so since I don't own a PC. I use Safari as a browser. I haven't yet tried to print screen shots of the desired map so I will try that until I find a solution. Any suggested fixes would be greatly appreciated.
  2. I won't be buying an iPhone just to geocache ... it's not in my budget. However, my friends who have one already will love to try the intro to geocaching app. If they quickly get hooked like we did with our geomate.jr, they can go ahead and get the full featured app or invest in a GPS unit. It's a perfect way for them to try it out on their own after they tag along with us on a few searches. Thanks for the tip!
  3. Lots of people geocache with their iPhone and Android smartphones these days (myself included) . It's nice to have the entire geocaching database at your fingertips. Lots of pros and cons .... Just have a look thru this forum, you will find endless posts about it. That's good to know. I will look at those forums when I get a chance. My biggest problem now is there is so much to learn about geocaching and so little free time to accomplish it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds the everyday demands of life getting in the way of geocaching time! Thanks ChefRd2000!
  4. That's a great suggestion ... but I don't have an iPhone. However, we are so excited about geocaching that we have been telling many of our friends about it and they do have iPhones. They love how easy our little geomate.jr is to use so I'm wondering how the iPhone app compares to it as far as ease of use is concerned. In any case, I'll be sure to tell them about your suggestion so they can consider it as an option before investing in any GPS devices. Thanks rricketts!
  5. We upgraded to premium, figured out how to perform a pocket query and loaded it into the geomate.jr, found our first cache this morning and are totally hooked. I've decided to keep the geomate.jr for my daughter and I've got an eTrex 20 on order for myself. This way my daughter will have a simple device (arrow pointing in the right direction) to have with her at all times on our searches loaded with the caches of interest to us and I'll have one that allows me to go paperless and use maps. Thanks to all who helped us find this workable solution to our dilemma. We're going to have fun with this!
  6. What a great review ChefRd2000! After watching it I know my concerns about the eTrex 20 being much more complicated than the geomate.jr are all true but I think it does what I want it to do and then some. My background is technical so I'll be able to figure it out. It will be much more difficult for my young daughter to use but she's bright and I think she'll like seeing the tracks on the map. For the moment I'm sold on the 20 thanks to you and the other replies to my posts. I'll think about it over the weekend and make my choice so we can get out there and find our first geocache. Thanks for your help.
  7. Thanks so much mpilchfamily and ChefRd2000 for the very clear advice to make the return! We'll do that even though my daughter will be very disappointed not to go on our first search this afternoon. We'll get to that next week I guess. I'm looking at the eTrex 10 or 20 as the replacement. I'm trying to sort out if the extra $ for the 20 will be worth it for us. I'm also going to upgrade to the premium membership since I think it is totally awesome that this forum was out there for me and you two cachers were kind enough to shed some light on my dilemma and point me in the right direction. Thank you!
  8. We are new to the geocaching world and just received our new geomate.jr and update kit. I attempted to perform an update and wasn't able to access the website which led me to the various Groundspeak forums that informed me apisphere is out of business and there is currently no customer support for the device and it may never come back (yes, I should have looked here first but that is water under the bridge). So, my question to all you expert geocachers is this ... for newbies like my daughter and I, is the unsupported geomate.jr worth keeping or should I return it for a refund while I still can? It seems like a very simple to use and cool little device that is perfect for getting started with this sport. It seems like with the caches currently loaded at the time of manufacture it could keep us busy for quite some time. Also, I downloaded the file they say can be used to upload pocket queries but that is all way beyond my level of involvement and understanding in the sport at this time (we haven't even found our first find yet!). But, if it's better to have access to the latest available cashes then maybe it would be better to begin with another simple and not too expensive device that is fully supported. ... we'd really appreciate any suggestions you have for us! Thanks
