  1. Thank you for the replys. Yes I will check on my sales slip and am in the process of going to call Grmin and see. Why do some users look down on the GPSmap62?? It seems like a neat unit Thank you for the suggestions friends
  2. Has anyone used this unit the Garmin GPSmap62s and experienced that in the waypoints being off by 30-70 feet or so. I will walk up in a open feild and mark a tree or bush for example and walk away about 100 feet or so and come back to the waypoint and the map62 is off on the marked wp. I have used several other gps units as a check against the map62s that I have and have found that I get a consistant distance of 30-70 feet reading that is off. Has anyone had this problem before and has it been an easy fix possibly? I bought the unit brand new from Gander Mountain about 3 months ago. Since having the unit I have noticed that the error in the wp distance is especially true in the process of manually entering wp coordinates in the event of second and third stage multi caches for example. I believe that I also purchased a warranty with the unit for an extra price, does anyone have an idea if this would fall under some sort of warranty issues/coverages?? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly accepted. I would like to think that Garmin is real good about fixing problems such as this as Im sure that it has happened more than just this once Thoughts> advice Thank you very much all. I would like to add that when I put geocaches from the geocache.com into the map62s that the waypoints of the caches are good and that seems to be an non-issue/ also when I dump caches into the unit through a pocket querry that also seems to be always good too, non issue. Thank you
  3. What do anyone think of the Garmin GPSmap62 unit? Good , bad , so so?? Good for geocaching and hiking? Thanks for thoughts and suggestions
  4. I honestly don't recall the name of the stuff, but if you go to a craft store such as Michael's and let them know what you're looking for, they'll point you at the right stuff. It doesn't get sticky after it is dry and you can write on it. I used to use it for the signature business cards I would leave behind in caches before I upgraded to my current sig item. I would write the date I visited the cache and at that time when people were curious about it, how close the posted coords were to the cache and then put my standard signature on it. For those times I didn't have NatGeo paper or couldn't waterproof them, I kept them in gallon sized ziploc freezer baggies. I found a product called MapSeal, at Marine General, about $6.00 for 4oz. Lable says it will cover about 3 TOPO Maps. Can be re-folded many times, cant wait to try it out
  5. Ive gotten USGS TOPO Maps from the local library and taken them to a local print shop to have them copied. Some of the areas Ive had copied are mostly up in Northern Minnesota, in the BWCAW for use in canoe, and also on hiking and mountain biking and to assist in some instances on finding/placing caches. The paper used is a bit heavier than regular typing paper. Some other print shop was charging almost $60.00 per map to print in color, and onto water proof paper, which would be nice, but too expensive, since more than several maps are going to be printed. Ive tried several diffenent methods in the past week on 1 foot square test peices of paper. The first method was several light coats of spray shellac letting each coat dry between but the end turns out to not work. After several days of dry time I folded the paper upon itself several times and let sit for awhile, when I returned I tried to seperate the layers only to find that the pages had stuck to each other, and would tear and rip, so the shellac method did not work. Also you cant write on the surface either. The other method Ive tried was some more test peices and several light coats of spray on Thompsons Water Seal. After sufficient dry time I placed test peices in water and the water did appear to bead up on the surface of both sides. However the paper itself felt as if it would tear under normal use, (did not seem strong enough after being wet) but after the paper was dry seemed to be back to normal again. Maybe apply TWS with a varnish brush?? Im next going to try to apply to both sides clear sticky contact paper. That should water proof the maps but may not be able to write on the surface. Anyone tried this method? I want to bring these maps along on hiking and camping trips as an extra play toy along with the Sylva compass orrenteering style, which we like. Id really like to hear what others use when they go hiking in far out places and methods of protecting maps. I know there must be lots of hikers and explorers out there, going up to far places in Canada, or Youkon or beyond far Alaska. I do not have the capacity to have maps printed and pay a high price, or have disc or programs on any of that high tech style stuff. TotemLake, what is the coating you refer to? Thanks for any more input everyone hope to get lots of replies, to me this is very exciting just now starting to be interested in yet another aspect of Geocaching.
  6. Have you ever waterproof paper for printing TOPO Maps? What works? Thank you
  7. I use mapsource all the time love it. Im talking more paper maps like for hiking and finding cliffs or water falls and using topo maps to place caches also am intrested in learning more about being able to learn more about using map and gps together Thanks for all the replies every one, Ive heard about National Geographic Maps supposed to be good, and therer are several downloadable I think maps products on line for about 25 dollars or more a year, anyone have any thoughts on those types also?? I use a Garmin ETrex Legend Thank you and have a great day
  8. Thanks for all the replys so quickly. Im hoping the unit is not going bad. Will be carrying a spare with from now on just in case, but even if the gps doesnt act up again no telling if it ever will, could it ever be trusted to not happen again? What how would you feel about that?
  9. OK Im going to check this out soon Thank you
  10. What is a good source for getting TOPO Topographic Maps for an area to use with gps and caching?
  11. No I actually was up quite high above the city on trails no trees around just the sun in the sky and slight breeze I was caching in northern Minnesota Anyone had this problem before? Im going to be bring my back up gpsr along for awhile from now on just so I can have a spare in case it happens again.
  12. While caching today something strange happened to the gpsr. It has never happened like this before. First a little background on the unit, its a Garmin ETrex Legend (blue) bought new in Christmas of 2005, so maybe a little old, its never recently been dropped and has stayed dry ever since it got wet about four years ago, and I applied JB Weld around the rubber seals all around the unit. Ive never had an issue with it since the last time when I reported to you here (Forums) of what I called the mystery line leading a go-to track to Kansas, but some of you gave good advice then and that problem has been nullified ever since, thats been several years ago now. Now we are at today...here is what happened this time: Like I said I was caching this morning when all of a sudden the screen went totally blank and a solid thin black line was on the screen from top to bottom appeared. I tried to shut the gps off, but that appeared to not work (seemed I could not shut it off) so I removed the batteries and reinserted them and turned the gps on and everything seemed normal again. I continued on and again for the second time all of a sudden the screen again went totally blank and the black thin solid line appeared from top to bottom. I again attempted to turn unit off, which it appeared to not be able to turn off?? so I removed the batteries and reinserted them again and turned the unit back on which them appeared to be working perfect again. I continued on when for the third time all of a sudden the unit again screen went totally blank, and the solid black thin line appeared from top to bottom. Again the unit would not swithc off, so I removed the batteries, put them back in and turned the unit back on again. Everything seemed to then be perfect once again, I checked the battery power and saw there was still 3/4 power still left, so felt that the batteries were not the problem. Over the course of another hour or so the gps did not act up again, as I kept a close eye on it. So it did acting up in about a twenty minute time period three times in a row. The sky conditions were totally sunny, about mild tempreature so cold or orvercast is not the issue. Any ideas?? Has this ever happened to anyone before?? Thoughts? Thank you all
  13. There are many online services which can forward the emails without your computer being on. Just check the email on the phone, and then get the coordinates and such from the phone also. I have geocaching.com as in my favorites, all is needed to log in.
  14. Of the several caches that I own, about six of them are regular sized ammo boxes. Last summer and winter in the area I live in (Northern Minn.) there was a shortage of ammo boxes to be found, and when the suppelier received more ammo box inventory, the price was about quite a bit higher than usual. ( Metal Ammo Cans). When I noticed that recently the (earlier this spring, late winter) the price had fallen back to normal, I purchased several more containers. In a store today, (one I get ammo boxes from in the past) I noticed plastic ammo boxes, guess Id never noticed them before or had not paid attention. First thing I looked at was the price, about $35.00 for a large. I asked the clerk if both store locations had any small metal boxes left and he said no, may not be getting any either in the future. Long question short is, could the era of metal ammo cans be coming to an end? Are plastic ammo cans the future??
  15. Drill a hole in a small diameter twig and place it in the midle of a clear cut area
  16. From when you received the first GPS unit, how many have you had up until now? Do you keep getting a better one from the one before? What are some reasons you have upgraded?
  17. Around where I live and cache permission is needed from the Parks Department
  18. I figured so couldnt find it though Thanks
  19. Who are you... The Toughest Caches of the World? Terrain, Difficulty, Water, Swamp, Blood, Guts and Gore (Glory scars) the works! The ones that will be told about in the gatherings of campfires over. Caches known for... all the best reasons.
  20. Would a cache be approved if it were placed on or near Mt Everest? what about other mountains? Anyone know of any mountainous caches?
  21. Yes most puzzle caches are way to beyond me to figure out, but I can get a few of them. How do they get thought up in the first place Thanks
  22. I understand what you are saying. Let me give an example: One book (Author) may give different souces of information than say a google search may come up with. Maybe the depth or Lake Superior, or the amount of water per minute an artesian well flows from a particular place but arriving at some particular number. From this particular number a process can then be started to determine the set of coordinates needed to find the final. If a cacher was gaining information from several different sources, including doing google searches, the coordinates would never be figured out to find the final. Sometimes different sources can have different sets of facts. So if all information was taken from one source this would be the common starting point for all the answers needed. Sorry for being so confusuing here.
  23. If placing a puzzle cache for example and in order for finding the final the cacher needs to do some research to gain information to get the coordinates; Can some of the information be made available at a library in a certain book to keep all the information from the same source. Should this be listed on the cache page?
