    Bench Marks

Like pinzin sez: http://www.geod.nrcan.gc.ca/index_e.php Then go play at geocaching.com's sister site ...... www.Waymarking.com Wayne tec_64 Sudbury, Ontario
  2. Up here in Sudbury Ontario, I've used google maps satellite photos via the AcmeMapper website to get fixes on various precision landmarks. Punched them in to my Garmin. Used Trimble planning to pick a day and time with low HDOP and have got pretty decent (read accurate) and repeatable results. Wayne tec_64
  3. Good luck finding anyone to cache with in Sudbury. They seem like a bunch of loners here.
  4. Hi folks!, Don't laugh. The Explorist 200 was free and it has been a very trusty little unit. Anyway, the accuracy is ok, just the clock has seemed to slip 3 seconds. I had this problem before and fixed it with a recommendation from this forum. I did a search here but can't seem to find anything on this particular subject. I did a clear and dump but it didn't work for the clock (and I had two WAAS birds, now I only have one. I knew that might happen). Time to go shopping I think. Wayne
  5. Use the new declination with your compass to align your map edge to true north. As for the datum (NAD27) and your GPS: if you get coords in WGS84, switch your GPS to WGS84, enter your coords then switch your GPS datum to NAD27 for use with your maps. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. tec_64
  6. Here's something I did that is sort of relates: http://www.personainternet.com/mile77/3709562.htm tec_64
  7. Thanks a bunch for the replies, gang. BTW, I was just kidding about the trimble unit. ..... But if I was a multimillionaire I might get one! LOL! Tnx again! tec_64
  8. I've also done the aerial photo registration mark (+ or X) on a rock thing and got very good and consistant accuracy results in Google Maps vs my ol maggy 210.

  10. Hi Gang!, Is there anywhere published online, unbiased, legit and reliable comparison/reviews of handheld mapping GPS units? I don't want links to biased or "company funded" publications .I don't mean to be lazy, but I think some reliable and educatied responses would be found here. tec_64 P.S. Personally, I like the Trimble GeoXH.
  11. Here's the details of my "experiment", in case anyone cares. http://www.personainternet.com/mile77/3709562.htm tec_64 Comments welcome.
  12. I've been checking the consistancy of readings of my GPS by repeat visits to a high-accuracy benchmark. For the most part, I've been getting very consistant repeat readings. I use the same procedure and setup each time (eg. GPS on for at least 20 minutes for almanac update to load, clear sky, etc. etc .). I use Trimble Planning software with the latest Keps to determine the best HDOP (usually less that 0.8) times. Again, for the most part, my readings repeat themselves within a metre. Even with all that, every once in a while I get a coord that is out of whack. Any ideas? Aliens? I didn't see any black helicopters. I had my foil hat on. I'm not anal about it. It was just a curiousity and I had some (too much?) time on my hands.
  13. Clickable PowerTank here. Even before I started caching, I been a Powertank fan. However... I don't sign logs with a pen. I use one of my mechanical pencils. I've "rescued two caches so far that have gotten soaked. Pencil usually survives in the logbook, whereas I found most pens won't. Just my personal observation. tec_64
  14. Thanks for the reply(s). I'm am then assuming, that, like my old Garmin, my maggy will then sample at 1 per second. Anyone know otherwise? tec_64
  15. Hi folks, I searched but didn't find an answer. I may have missed it. I have an old Magellan 210. I'd like to know how long after I stop moving, does the this unit start averaging it's location. Thanks! Wayne
  16. Kiwi Nomad got exactly what I was getting at. As well, Kiwi's closing comment advice is taken. Thank you again for all your replies!! tec_64
  17. Folks,! Thank you all for your replies. Many good points were made. I was basically just trying to get some opinions; and valid opinions were conveyed. Thank you! tec_64
  18. Something is starting to annoy me in my neck of the woods. The same two or three people keep hiding caches and then their buddies are getting the FTF's right away on their buddies caches. Any "etiquette" or opinions about this practice of artificially ramping-up FTF stats? tec_64
  19. I have a Brunton with a declination adj. You should be able to set it and leave it if you don't wander off (hundreds of miles) from the region where you normally use it. If you move to far (esp east or west) from your region, you will have to readjust it. Your GPS will know where true north is after it sets up and you move. It also knows your location to apply a reverse declination if you select to use magnetic. Where I'm at, the declination is currently 10.5 deg west. So if the GPS is set to true north and I don't have (or forgot about) the declination to compensate my "real" compass, I will end up with a 10 deg diff. Wayne
  20. Does the GPS's fluxgate compass automatically compensate for magnetic deviation in you region? That may cause the diff between the GPS flux compass and your "real" compass. Be carefull when holding your compass. A "real" compass obviously works best when held level. (Your GPS compass may be a 3D compass). I have a watch on my left wrist that has enough magnetism in it to throw off my compass by a few degrees if I hold it with that hand. When I'm shooting an az. I make sure nothing on me that has any magnetism in it is anywhere near my compass. Just my 2 cents. Wayne
  21. Thanks for the verification and the link, PDOP's. I see the D's on my Garmin. My Maggy display is a bit different. tec_64 (VE3THN) Sudbury, Ontario
  22. Speaking of almanacs, how long does it usually take to load? The data rate is 50 baud, is it not? tec_64
  23. I got the A+ also. Simple test though. There should have been some map north orientation, declination and scale/distance questions. tec_64
