  1. That has to be one of the most......... oh, nevermind. I'm going back to the bar. I think that when you return to the bar, you might be rubbing elbows with him! Seriously though, for the OP, a nifty miniature multi-tool that I found in a cache in my first week, that now resides next to my compass in it's pouch.
  2. Ummmm less than 800' However, I am the cache owner, and my silly white robe keeps me from logging it as a "find", even though I "find" it every few weeks to check on it
  3. Miserable...perhaps, but I was awarded this brilliant white robe as compensation!!!Woohoo!!! Good point. On the other hand, it still proves that POLI is an idiot. ROFLMAO I admit, at first glance, that I thought that this thread belonged in the off topic section, but then the shades were thrown open, and I understood. I was trying so hard to keep my hands away from the keyboard with this thread, but once again, I've been drawn in, and dropped the mouse to put in my $.02. Oh well
  4. I usually just leave my GPS hanging from the lanyard around my neck to "identify" myself as a cacher. It has worked everytime. I look for Palm Pilots, printed out cache descriptions, or a GPS to determine if someone else is a cacher. Just look around and watch, and you'll soon be able to pick up who's caching and who's being a muggle PITA.
  5. ouch. Did you actually post that, or am I imagining things here?
  6. Garmin 60CSX with City Navigator V8! Definitely the correct route to go, IMNSHO!
  7. Always shake out your boots before putting them on in the morning.
  8. I recently had mine on and hooked up to my laptop while flying roundtrip from Florida/ Chicago/Florida, and yes it was a fun way to pass the time. My shown speed was within 12MPH, and altitude within 100' of what the pilot gave out over the intercom. That's with the 60CSX in the window. Beautiful.
  9. I simply mark the caches as found in my GPS, then when I get home, dump my GPS info into GSAK, then log them all.
  10. I would love to trade for that in a cache!
  11. I have gotten this particular error several times myself, and the resolution that seemes to work for me is to uncheck the GC KML layer, let the map stream in until completed loading, then re-check the GC KML, and it tends to load up without error.
  12. You can tweak as often as you need to. I had to change one of mine from a full size trading cache to a micro due to the increasing cost of replacing swag and containers due to stealthless cachers. I have also moved a pair of mine due to cachers destroying an area while hunting, as they thought it was in a lamp post cover. The lamp post covers were caulked down, and that is NOT where it was. Never fear, folks hunting for it busted out the tools, and pried the covers off. The more you hunt, though, the more ideas you will have as far as hide methods, containers, camouflage, etc. Good luck!
  13. That is indeed my rule of thumb. I try to place them in a manner so that they stay safe from the elements, but things do happen. I only visit the out of the way caches I have hidden when there is a reported problem, for example DNF's, wet logs, etc. There are no hard and fast rules on how often you must visit them, it's not like they're lonely Let your conscience be your guide.
  14. The Mr. half of the team hid one with another local cacher some months ago. The Mrs. half went on a hike, and hunted for it until she found it all by herself, but I didn't/wouldn't log it as a find.
  15. Topic closed, issue being resolved on the side from here out.
  16. I concur with the above wholeheartedly! Backdate your log with a clear conscience, and grab that
  17. Yep, it can indeed be done. See GC9D7E for reference. Great idea, and a ton of fun.
  18. That is too cool!! A once in a lifetime happening, and I'm proud for you and yours.
  19. In the case that started all of this, there had been a DNF posted, and since it is only a few minutes from house to cache, I stopped by, verified it was in place, and replaced the log while I was there.I posted a maintenance note that all was well, and that the cache was there. In less than 48 hours is when it all kicked off, with the "geologgers" posted that yep, they thought the cache was missing, but due to their lifeline call, they KNEW where it was supposed to be, so they were logging a "find". I am fastidious about maintenance on my owned caches, and if there are multiple DNF's, usually 3, I will disable until I can check it personally. Fake finds can screw things up royally, and can have bad effects on others who waste time, gas, and energy to hunt something that may not be there, and is something that the owner needs to be aware of. Fake finds can also cause someone to be cast out of a circle of "friends", if they could be called that. BTW, how's my white robe looking to you guys? Disregard the bit of barbequeue sauce on the cuff there. I was thinking about adding some gold trim to it, to make it a bit flashier to wear when I feel a geo-rant coming on. Cache on!
  20. I do have to hold back from the straight line will get me there faster mentality sometimes, all I need to do to keep myself on the trail is look at all of the shiny scars on my legs, and remember how they got there!
  21. There are several posters in this thread who need to check their PMs if they haven't. I am not giving up this sport that has brought us so many hours of fun because of a couple of wormy apples in the barrel. I will not be run off because some folks think they are above the rules if their find count is so high, and seek to hold a onetime friendship hostage. It is geoCACHING not geoIFOUNDTHESPOTting. The object is to find the cache, not the spot you think it is in, and sign the log, and move on to the other quarter million or so caches. Alternatively, log a DNF, lather, rinse, and repeat. The good news is, I am not alone locally, I just happen to be the most vocal one in the group. Enjoy the walk or drive, and have fun hunting, but don't sic all of our onetime mutual friends on me, it won't work. I refuse to take the blame for someone else's pursuit of something to replace a bruised ego.
  22. Amen to that. It makes one give pause before placing several hundred pieces of micro spew that can never be properly maintained. I personally take great pride in my cache maintenance, and respond ASAP at the first sign of trouble to remote caches. Caches within 10 minutes walk of the vehicle are checked regularly, remotes only when needed. I do tend to make the remote caches MUCH more water/weatherproof for this reason. I ALWAYS carry a replacement micro log when hunting urban caches, though. If I am standing right there with a new log, I will always replace it and let the owner know that I have done so., and hold the old one a few days, in case he wants to review it himself for verification. OK, the chirp light just went off, time to shut up and see where this goes.
  23. Here's one for you: My60CSX' electronic compass got a little jiggy one day 9 miles out into a preserve, and I was at a T in the trail. No matter that I was having to recalibrate it it every 10 minutes, it was consistently either 90 or 180 degrees wrong. Completely unpredictable. I was already suffering from heat exhaustion, and my 8 liters of water were gone. Thanks to my lensatic compass and map printout, I was able to walk out of there, and save the cost of a medevac, and around here, it is $25K+ This is no joke, and no fairytale. Good Uncle Sam trained me all those years ago, and it saved my life, probably. I made it out to the hardtop and called the spouse, who was able to pick me up. Anyone who attempts wilderness caches without at least a minimum of map/compass and landnav abilities is asking for the worst to happen. I am holding off on going after the rest of the caches in this area until the winter, BTW. 16+ miles in the Florida sun through level 4 terrain will cook you drier than bad beef jerky. Just the thought of a second mortgage to pay a medevac chopper and the resulting embarrassment is enough to convince me to stay sharp on my map reading skills.
