  1. You can use one of the batteries that fit in a Motorola T720. Some models with higher capacity are too thick. So get the 1100mAh. From ebay: http://tinyurl.com/eb5tb And more info on the eXplorists : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eXplorist/messages
  2. tx for the infos. So Magellan want me to buy new maps to replace my 2 years old maps... I guess I wont get a new Magellan soon. Bag
  3. Hi, there is a Yahoo group for the Magellan Explorist now btw... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eXplorist/ Anyone tried the 500 or the 600 under tree canopy ? Also , will my old Mapsend Topo, Mapsend Basemap and Mapsend USA work with the Explorist 500 ? tx Bag
  4. had many 3d lock inside buildings with a Magellan Meridian (Merigreen). A few times with no windows in the room. On the opposite, I couldnt keep a lock with my eTrex Legend in my car or under tree cover, go figure ...
  5. How good is the gm100 under tree cover ? Can you add more memory ? Thanks
  6. Here is what Joe (from gpsinformation.com) has to say about the same review. " I want to "second" Jack's comments on the Sportrak Pro. I could hardly believe the accuracy demonstrated by the multiple plots Jack made. But they repeated over and over and day after day. The Sportrak Pro is the most stable and accurate consumer model GPS we have tested. When using WAAS, the scatter plots are extremely compact and do not show the usual (for other models) dispersion of points EVEN WHEN the GPS is placed under moderate tree cover. I think Magellan has demonstrated a "breakthrough" in GPS accuracy in a consumer model GPSR. " You have a map76 or a 76s ? hehehe Bag
  7. Hi Anders, I just want to know what is that picture below our name ??!! Is it you ? Bag

  10. I had a Legend for 5 weeks, terrible GPS, like all the eTrex series. Worst antenna available on the market. Very slow to lock. Very slow to scroll out of the map. You will almost always be 100 feet off of where u r on the map. Any Magellan Meridian/Sportrak or Garmin map76 , 76s, Rino is better than the Legend. DONT GET AN ETREX !!! And btw , where will you get an ext. antenna for the Legend ? Where does it plug in the unit ? Bag

  12. What about all the screens available on the Rino ? Compass ? Speedometer ? etc... Thanks
  13. Dont touch any eTrex. Worst antenna available on the market. You will regret it under tree cover or in a car. Get the Meridian Platinum, dadgum good GPS. Many geocachers told me not to get a eTrex Legend , I didnt believe them. One month later, I sold my Legend. If you prefer a Garmin, get a 76s. (Quadrifilar Antenna, like the Meridians) Bag
  14. what do you want to do with your GPS ? Only Geocaching ? Bag
  15. You can try the "returning policy" of some store. You know, the big ones where you can buy Cola, clothes, tires, etc ... Bag

  17. ok...just got done running several test s on the sportrak pro that was shipped to me yesterday, I will give you a few of my opinions and post the rest completely later in my forums at navicache.com I took the sportrak, the Meridian gold and Platinum and placed them all next to each other in a clear sky with no coverage to block the units. When I did this and powered them all up at the same time it was the sportrak that found 3 sats before the Meridians found any, it then locked 4 sats before the Meridians were able to lock 1...in total after 3 minutes of waiting the Sportrak was able to lock 7 sats and maintain them while the Meridians both locked and maintained 6 sats. I find the view screen on the sportrak a bit smaller than the merids, but it is also much clearer to view. The unit is light in the hand and comes with a lanyard that the merids lack. The only thing I was not impressd with that the sportrak has was the fact that Magellan changed all the button icons so that I had to relearn what each was compared to the 330 and Merid line. I will post some pix of side by side shots of the sportrak and the merids together so you can see how they compare size wise. I am looking forward to testing these against the Garmin line to see how well they do. I have also found that in medium tree cover that neither the Merids or the sportrak lost sat contact and accuracy based on locating a cache were very close with all three units. I'll add more as I get results.
  18. The Garmin III+ has a Quadrifilar antenna like the Meridians. The eTrex line has patch antenna. This is the major reason why I sold the Legend and going to buy a quadrifilar antenna GPS.

  20. From www.garmin.com about the eTrex Summit Battery Life: 22 HR (GPS only) 13 HR (GPS and Compass) And for the reception , well , both the Venture and the Legend couldnt lock if the GPS was not under the front window facing the sky. The Meridian (green) could lock anywhere inside the car. When hiking under tree cover , I had to keep both eTrex in my hand facing the sky to keep the tracking and even then I had some loss. The Meridian could do the job inside my pocket or at the bottom of my backpack under my lunch ... Bag

  22. Altimeter and electronic compass on the vista will eat your battery very fast. And you should know that all eTrex need to be facing the sky if you dont want loss signals. Very annoying. I also use GPS for hiking and Im considering a Garmin 76map , a Merdidian Gold or a Sportrak Pro. Im still waiting to try a Sportrak Pro. Maybe this week end... Bag

  24. "the eTrex beats the SportTrak hands down" Well dont compare the Sportak Pro with the Vista. You have to compare it with the Legend (8 meg, crappy basemap, crappy patch antenna, dadgum slow to lock, dadgum slow to scroll the map). And no one need a GPS if it cant lock. Thats why I sold my Legend. Believe me, eTrex just look cool, nothing more. Get a 76map/76s if you prefer Garmin. Bag
