  1. Rubber stamps are great to create and very easy. Hobby lobby usually carries both the stamp pad and carving tools although you have to search for them, the staff will have no idea what you are asking for. The pads go for around $5 make sure you get pink though, the blue is worthless. A number 2 carving tip is the best all around but having a v and a u tip helps. Transfer the image with a pencil drawing or a fresh ink jet print out and start carving. Crayons markers also work great as a cheap and easy ink. It is really simple to carve out signature stamps for hybrids and caches alike, it is nice to make a quick stamp of your user name. I enjoy mixing art and creation with caching.
  2. Just recently I found a swollen beer can in a cache , yuck! Also found a container of synthetic marijauna which smelled nasty so I disposed of the contents, removed the label of two pandas making " panda love" and used the container for a new cache. I assume a lot of the nasty swag is left by stoner kids or drunk hunters that stumble on the caches.
  3. I like both ideas of hiding the numbers within a geo themed segment. My time slot is three hours with an hour of talk time. I have not implemented anything yet, this was more if a scattered thought, so any and every suggestion helps. I also thought about a series or multi.
  4. AM radio to be specific. I actually host a short segment daily which includes news music and community events which should now include caching! We are a small tight knit community with lots of outdoor events.
  5. I like the idea of having to be within range of the broadcast and having a clue broadcasted rather than the coords outright. Broadcast range is about 20 miles+.Not worried about muggles though, it may get them interested in the game if they took the time to investigate. The cache would be placed mainly to involve the public with the community radio station and add a bit of interest to the local caches. The cache could also be planned ahead of time for out of towners since the broadcast is available online from anywhere.
  6. I typically log a DNF on my first visit. Maybe the next few if it is important to let others know the status of the cache. I also will change my DNF to a smiley. I have had a few cachers that clog the logs with multiple DNF'S, notes and then their final smiley. Do you guys add new logs or edit logs as you go?
  7. Using a book as a story guide is a great idea! I once had a plan to use my favorite childhood novel as a walk through to a cache. Also placing a cryptic puzzle with answers from the book makes a great multi. Many books are available online and easily accessed. I also like the idea of shying away from google as the main source of puzzle information. The caches where you actually have to read or watch something makes it much more interesting.
  8. What do you think about a cache which you have to tune in to our local radio station on a specific day of the week at a specific time in order to hear the coordinates. To my knowledge this does not violate any guidelines. The cache page would give the time and station to tune in to and the coords would be revealed once a week. Any comments or suggestions?
  9. Not upset at all in any form. Unsure why you assume this is a b**** fest, some forums are to get better info on a subject and get personal feedback. I assume you have a lot of FTF claims that you tagged along with CO due to your hostility. There are a lot of gray areas in geocaching and obviously everyone has their opinion on each.
  10. What's your problem exactly. The FTF, or the caches. No problem just a question. It seems like the same concept as logging a find on your own hides. There are a number of puzzle caches in the area that have not yet been solved but have been logged, which just makes the puzzle that much more frustrating. I was simply asking if the rules are general for this or if there is a code of conduct followed by seasoned cachers or if no one cares. Also in our area the Lonelycacheproject awards points and places you overall in specific categories including FTF an First day finders which you no longer get if the ache was already logged.
  11. Is it common to claim a find when you are with the CO during placement.? This happens often in my area and takes away from FTF points in the regions Lonelycache project. There is also a number of unfounded caches that are claimed by the CO's hiking buddies. Just curious if this is standard or if it is frowned upon.
  12. A reverse geocache is a great idea I think. I have heard of a few gifts and proposals involving one that only opens at a designated location. Once she finds the location the box opens! One nano is not enough effort. Make her have the day of her life, that is if she really enjoys geocaching as much as she say!
  13. I think the mushroom you created looks great as it is up to you to decide how real or well hidden your cache is. I enjoy evil hides as any other other cache but not if a 2 hour hike is required to get to them. If you provide the user with all the proper hints and information you can help avoid DNF's(Unless that is what you are aiming for) and avoid "DESTRUCTIVE CACHERS" from trampling all around your cache GZ by mentioning to "tread lightly". The way I look at it is if you hide an acorn in an acorn tree a squirrel can't tell the difference but if you hide an acorn in a pine tree only a cacher would see that as odd. The same idea if you hide a mushroom that looks out of place or un-native most likely only a cacher would notice this slight difference.Puns and play on words with creative containers stand out to me. The flat mushrooms previously noted can be reattached to a dead fall lying down tree by boring out a small hole in the shroom a bit larger than than the stub of a protruding branch almost used like a dowel. Creative geocaches get my favorite points over difficulty to find but there is always a happy medium.
  14. Creativity makes the best cache. I recently made a cache out of the small silica preservefr at the bottom of a tylenol bottle. With a few drops of boat glue this container became waterproof. Next I assembled a few copper tubes together and placed it near a water line. I get plenty of comments on the construction and ultimately this cost me nothing as I found these existing pieces in the shed.I would definately shy away from any type of food containers as the critters can even smell through bleach. It is satisfying to sign a log in a bison hung in a tree but it is memorable when you have to work a bit for it.
  15. I recently found a few caches that were very small one inch in diameter by six inch long PVC stuck into soft sand near a burned out stump. A small camo item sits on top which when lifted reveals the cache from the PVC. I believe if this cache was removed there would be absolutely no trace other than the footsteps around it. To me this follows the guidlines as it requires no digging from the CO or the cacher. Just a small pipe stuck in the ground with a bison suspended down it.
  16. I only recently started caching but my belief is to each their own. I enjoy 20 mile hikes often and anjoy finding large containers out in the woods. I also enjoy driving up near a location trying to figure out where the needle lies within the haystack. My significant other cannot trek on hikes more than a mile so micros give us the pleasure of caching together. I think GC.com should make gaurdrail and highway caches its own seperate catagory because those are definately my least favorite.
