  1. Learned the trick with a google search.

    1. Power off your 660.

    2. Place your thumb on the upper left corner of the screen.

    3. Power on the 660.

    4. Wait for the confirmation screen and enter maintenance mode.

    5. Choose delete all waypoints.

You'll have to redo you user settings as they are deleted too, but they take alot less time to change back than deleting 500 waypoints one at a time.

Overwriting the gpx file doesn't work. I have tryed all the diferent ways I could think of.

If you have any problems google "Deleting waypoints in a Nuvi 660"

I don't expect that you will.

    Good luck,

    HiTech MD

Thanks for this tip...I was going crazy. Works like a champ! :)

Is there a way to associate the geocaching icons with the GPX file that I push into my Nuvi 660 via Garmin's POI loader? I can do this with my GPSmap 60 CSx. :(

Thanks in advance for anyone's help. B)

  2. What the... I thought I had signed up for the Garmin "Let me know when the software/firmware was updated". I still had 2.70 on my 60csx. Reading this post, I quickly went back to the Garmin website, selected the 60csx GPS information, and downloaded the latest and greatest, 2.90. Plus I signed up again for the notifyer feature. I won't trust that again, though. I'll make it a habit to check every month for updates.

Ya. I used to get email updates, but that stopped about six months ago. I usually see a thread on this forum that suggests there's a new version available. Hopefully someone from Garmin reads our forum. :)

  3. Our team traditionally posts images with most cache finds. Once we inadvertently posted a blatant spoiler on a virtual. It was about two months later that I received an email suggesting that the cache hider had deleted my log. It included links so I could see what in the world happened. I was so embarrassed when I realized what I had done.

  4. My bro-in-law and I both have Garmin 60csx's that were purchased a shot time ago.

His is more accurate than mine.

I will be 20+ feet from a cache and he will be within a couple of feet. The Garmin's black arrow will bounce around while his holds steady while standing or walking.

Could there be something wrong with my Garmin?

Before I call Garmin support, I though you folks a crack at my problem.

    Thanks...

    Nick

I would check to see if you both have the same firmware. Go ~ (menu->setup->system->Menu->Software Version), to check what you're running. You should/could see Software Version 3.00 and GPS SW Version 2.90. If not, keep reading.

As Garmin continues to improve its firmware, they are really good about offering updates. Use the Web Updater - http://www.garmin.com/products/webupdater/. This will load an app that will keep you current with any updates.

    Hope this helps.

  5. I am using a Treo 700wx and am having an issue downloading gpx files from the geocaching website. When I go to a cache page and click on the gpx lnk it prompts me to save but it is an aspx file type.I am using pocket IE on wm5.Is it possible to download the gpx files from the site.I would love to do this when I get a notification for a new cache so I can load the gpx straght into cachemate instead of hand entering evrything.

There is a new app out that is really cool. Easy to load, and worked without digging into a bunch of help files. Very intuitive. Go here - http://www.cyancanyon.com/software/smache/. Best thing.....for now it's free. :(
  6. It does not.

Does anyone know if this is something that Garmin intends on offering in the form of an update? Is that even possible? Sure would be nice.

Let me rephrase the question...how about an update that allows the power to draw from either your USB cable or a DC cord when plugged into your GPSr, and using the battery’s power only when it’s unplugged?

  7. This is my first attempt at an how-to guide for those of you who may want to see the geocaching symbols on your 60CSx instead of the standard Closed/Open Treasure chests.

As with anything, you will gain some functionality, and lose some functionality. In fact, I'm not even sure I'm going to keep using this, but since I went through the trouble of figuring it out, I might as well post it here. This is derived from info from several websites and several forum threads, but accumulated here along with step by step instructions (credits at bottom)

Here are some photos of the screens with the symbols in action:

    1) The Map Screen

    Map.jpg

    2) List of Nearest Caches

    NearestCaches.jpg

    3) Cache Details Screen

    CacheDetails.jpg

    Pros:

    - You get the symbols to aid in quickly identifying caches when viewing nearest or while traveling down the road watching the map

    - If you are using GSAK to include a "Cache Type" identifier in the name or notes, it frees up that space for other information.

    Cons:

    - Loss of the "geocaching" mode functions.

---- "quick find" functionality Can overcome by simply switching the symbol when you find it

---- "Find Next Nearest" functionality. Can overcome by just bringing up closest waypoints again

    Here are the steps.

    Required Software/Downloads:

    1. xImage
    2. GSAK
    3. Geocaching Symbols

    Upload symbols to GPSr:

    1. Unzip the .bmp files in the New Symbols .zip file you downloaded to a temporary folder.
    2. Connect GPSr and turn it on
    3. Open xImage
    4. Click "next"
    5. After it finds the GPSr, click "next"
    6. Click on "Send Images to the GPS"
    7. Click on "Select All"
    8. Click "next"
    9. Navigate to the folder with the symbols
    10. Click on finish
    11. On GPSr, open any waypoint (or create a new one)
    12. highlight the symbol (upper left of screen) and click on "enter"
    13. You should see all the new geocaching icons in the "Custom" section.

    Set up GSAK:

    1. Open up Notepad and paste the following into it:
      Custom 0 ; Traditional
      Custom 1 ; Traditional Found
      Custom 2 ; Traditional Archived
      Custom 3 ; Multi
      Custom 4 ; Multi Found
      Custom 5 ; Multi Archived
      Custom 6 ; Virtual
      Custom 7 ; Virtual Found
      Custom 8 ; Virtual Archived
      Custom 9 ; Letterbox
      Custom 10 ; Letterbox Found
      Custom 11 ; Letterbox Archived
      Custom 12 ; Event
      Custom 13 ; Event Found
      Custom 14 ; Event Archived
      Custom 15 ; Webcam
      Custom 16 ; Webcam Found
      Custom 17 ; Webcam Archived
      Custom 18 ; Mystery
      Custom 19 ; Mystery Found
      Custom 20 ; Mystery Archived
      Custom 21 ; Locationless
      Custom 22 ; Locationless Found
      Custom 23 ; Locationless Archived
    2. Save this file as GARMINOTHER.txt into the GSAK program directory (default is c:\Program Files\GSAK\)
    3. Open GSAK
    4. Click on GPS -> Send Waypoints
    5. Click on the Change button
    6. Check the "Combine Both" Radio Button
    7. In the right-hand list of cache types, select "Traditional+Found"
    8. In the "Icon" pulldown, select "Custom 1; Traditional Found"
    9. Repeat for each cache type in the right-hand list of cache types.

Question #9 of the 60CS FAQ:

    This xImage thread.

    TheOfficeMaven for designing the symbols

Bingo Bango Bongo!! Thanks for making this one easy :o
  8. I am looking for "goodies" that have Signal on them. I just love that guy. He makes me smile. So I've been searching for shirts, etc. I have found nothing.

Anyone else want items with Signal on them? Yes, I know there is an antenna ball and stuffed Signal. But I want a shirt, hat or something like that.

    Sharnie :D

ooo! a green hat with a yellow antenna like the one on the stuffed signal would be fun. :D

I would go for a green hat with :D on it, but I am not ready to commit to wearing an antenna just yet...

    Bump

  9. Okay, here is a situation where I logged an event more than once:Local cachers throw an event at their house every 3 or 4 months. Instead of archiving it, they disable it until next time. So although I have 2 finds on one event, I attended the event in October then again in April. To me, it is two separate events, but it only has one cache page.

I never understood why an event was ever allowed to be counted as a find in the first place. Heck you didn't find anything except maybe new geocaching friends. That shouldn't count anyway. If you need a smiley in order to host or attend an event, don't bother. You were going for the wrong reasons anyway.
  10. Warning - slightly off-topic response:

I agree about the windbreakers, hats, etc. but has anyone ever considered air fresheners for your car? You know, the kind that hang from your mirror? It would also be a great way to let others know you were caching in the area. I guess it might cause some scrambling if there's an FTF in the area though.

    Not a bad idea!
  11. Seeing as how several WI events have been linked, I will offer my take on this multiple event logging.

    Commendable.

Awhile ago, I began thinking, if events were to bring people together to meet and share stories etc, why was everyone scattered about many acres focused on finding all the temp caches? So focused they are, that many will skip the potluck dinners, group meetings, group photos etc., because it will take precious time from finding all the caches. (I know, I've done this in the past myself).

    How sad is that? :anibad:

I held a weekend event this past winter. I actually had a few teams not attend because we did not provide enough temp caches to make it worth their time. I've seen this trend. If there are no or very little temp caches at events, it is poorly attended. Make an event with at least 30 caches, you will have lots of people there.

These typically would be the cachers that look you in the eye and say "It's not about the numbers."

When I realized it was about the numbers (and IT IS) and that I was not having any fun geocaching because of it, I changed my ways. I am happy to say that as of late fall 2005, I no longer partake in multiple logging of events. Thank God!

This is a refreshing comment, one that more cachers should consider.

I am beginning to agree with others- one GC number equals one smiley. Period. Do I agree that GC should enforce this? No. It should be a decision left up to each cache owner and cacher whether to allow multiple logs. As it was pointed out in the original post link - a cacher with several hundred or thousand attended events looks stupid to me. (I can say that, cause my own stats show my own previous stupidity with events).I understand that this post contains your words/opinions, and that you have every right to speak them.

I'm glad you took the time to write this post being a WI geocacher. As I have read through this debated string of posts over the last couple days, I feel WI Geocaching is slowly developing a "black eye" so to speak, for some of their events, as are a few of their local cachers. Funny thing is that numbers really don't matter in the overall scheme of things and even if they did, these individuals would have a big asterisks next to their profile anyway. I do however think that GC should develop simple code that would prevent anyone from logging more than one find per cache. For those people that want to see a bigger numbers next to their name so they can feel better, download this little app - http://www.rb59.com/geoc/index.html, and track all your duplicaches.
