  1. Perhaps everyone is already aware of this; I don't know, but I just accidentally discovered it today.

On the map screen (in my 60Cx) if I do: menu -> setup map -> map setup information...

And then hit the menu button again... it gives the options to show or hide particular map sets (the entire set)...

I have five different map sets on my 60Cx right now, four of which can overlap at any given time. Two map sets are basically duplicates of each other (GPMapa Poland 4.0 and UMP's Polska set) and the other two are topo maps and Slovakia road maps.

Hey Exocet, thanks for the tip! I mainly use City Nav8 and I just got USA Topo. I was hoping there was a better way to switch back and forth without having to select/deselect individual maps. Many thanks for sharing your discovery.

OK---I'm hoping to find the answers without starting a new topic, but while I tried this means of switching between topo and CN8, it won't work for me--I can't seem to have both Topo and CN8 on the unit at the same time. If I transfer a TOPO mapset to the receiver, it deletes the street maps and vice-versa.

    Any advice?

Transfer both maps at the same time.

In MapSource, do: Tools -> Map

Select the map pieces you want from CN8 or Topo.

Switch to the other map in the left-hand drop-down menu.

Again, select the map pieces you want.

    Transfer -> Send to Device.

That should be all that's needed. There is no other way to load locked + unlocked sets of maps into a Garmin GPSr other than the way I just described. There are other ways if both sets of maps are unlocked, but this is obviously not the case here.

    Cool--that worked. Thanks!

Until I found this thread, I've been grumbling (for a couple months) that I couldn't have my cake and eat it too. Once again, this forum's members have really helped me out.

  3. Okay, maybe I have too much free time on my hands, but I've been watching a cache in my area lately. Whenever somebody logs that they've dropped a TB in that cache, the next person to log in (whether same day or a couple days later) posts that no TBs were found. It's happened a few times.

So my question is, is it common for some folks to go swipe TBs from a cache, for some reason, as soon as they're logged in? Why? Hoarding them? Or is this cache a portal to the same dimension where all the left socks go?

(some have been Jeeps, many have been geocoins or personal TBs).

  4. Yeah, so I've heard.

I'm just passing along the info that Garmin's tech service is spouting (i.e. to NOT use NT on the Map60CSx), as I thought y'all would find it interesting. Personally, I'm wondering if they're just trying to unload the rest of their non-NT stock before releasing the NT version.

  5. I just called Garmin Sales. The woman who helped me said I should absolutely NOT use the non-NT version of Navigator 8 on my 60CSx. She clarified this for me three times. I asked if she could tell me why, and she passed me on to technical support.

Well, Joe over at Support said exactly the opposite--City Navigator 8 NT should NOT be used on the GPSMap 60CSx, and that it is intended for auto units only.

And again, I asked him to clarify it for me, and I let him know there was a LOT of conflicting information out there.

    Just thought I'd share.

  6. Interesting thread.

I happen to carry much of the time (CCW), but I've also found that, as somebody responsible for her own safety, that I avoid situations where I feel the likelihood of danger is greater than average. For example, I rarely hike or fish alone. Much as I hate to say it, that's probably a good decision all around. When I do, I've found that a hiking staff, my large dog or just a bit of attitude and assertiveness does the trick--I've never even thought about the 9mm in my pack/holster. And trust me, I've had to use that hiking staff.

One thing's for sure, having a buddy isn't always enough to deter malevolent interlopers--be they of the two- or four-legged type.

Do I think I'd be quick enough to fend off an attacking cougar? Not a chance. Not with a firearm, anyway.

By the way, the only times I've been involved in violent incidents (attempted rape and a mugging) I happened to be in the "good" part o' town.

For those of you who choose to call those of us who choose to carry "nuts" or "paranoid," I'd like to gently ask you to educate yourself about firearms and CCW in an active--rather than passive--fashion. Most (definitely not all, and that scares me, too) people who carry are among the most responsible folks you'd meet, and take their training seriously. Most of us can even spell the models of the firearms we carry! :) AND we know the diff between a "clip" and a "magazine". And most of us prefer not to even divulge that we carry, for many reasons.

I, too, used to believe in the following falsehoods, thanks to urban myth, living in California for 29 years, etc. etc:

    1. Hollowpoints are cop killers (Was it Mopar who hit the nail on the head?)

    2. I'll just end up shooting myself in the foot (it happens if you're super careless, but so can falling off a cliff on a nice hike. Does that keep you indoors?)

    3. It will only be used against me

    4. It is the duty of the police to intervene and protect each of us from danger.

And Criminal--Do I recognize an 870 under all those modifications? Pretty! :)

  7. Hey, Ichabod! (He who was the FTF on my very first cache--sans GPS!)

I'm new at this game, but as the perennial Gadget Girl, I've gotta whine--you Googlecachers are undermining my excuse to buy more geek gear!

Heck, I'd use a GPSr to find my way from the couch to the can if it worked indoors. Just because. :P

  8. I'm thinking of getting a Tyvek HAZMAT suit, white rubber boots, face-shield and a crapload of BIOHAZARD stickers and baggies. Some friends did this for the fun of it, walking around with clipboards, poking at stuff in the ground, while other friends wore suits and earbuds and talked into wristwatches. All in a downtown park.

Just got busted today by security guards who "glassed" me from about 100 yards away. The cache was at the base of a major bridge/overpass here in town. I had some 'splaining to do, so I took Alabama Rambler's approach. So there I was, describing Geocaching to three guards, while they munched on Cheetos. Spreading the word.

Got home and realized why they were so edgy--Today's news was all about two events: the whole London peroxide hijacking plot (I'm thinking that blonde jokes are inappropriate here?) and some pipe bombs found near our state capitol. DOH!

So this noob has a lot more respect for you old warhorses. Can only imagine the rest of the stories out there.

  9. Access to the festival is restricted to paying customers and it costs plenty. The location is not secret, and I'm pretty sure that it's held in pretty much the same spot every year, but I don't think that you could hide a cache there because there's nowhere for a cache to hide.

    Exactly.

    40°45'16.09"N

    119°14'11.43"W

These are the coords for the festival. (Or, just go to Google Earth, look up Gerlach, NV, and scroll northeast a bit until you see the geometric shapes on the dry lakebed). Though it moved farther down the playa last year, it's pretty much been the same place for years--Black Rock Desert.

As you can see, there's nothing there but flat lakebed, or "playa". Even the road tracks are swept clean at the end of each festival. People fan out to pick up all trash, right down to specks of glitter, so nothing is left behind.

If you wanted to make sure geocachers had a loggable spot, you could set a cache in Gerlach. I'd suggest the famous water tower, which the Burning Man organization (BORG) has raised funds to preserve. Otherwise, simply post to the forum a clue (the name of your camp, a hint where to find coords for your cache, etc) and members who are going to the playa can play along. By the way, "Black Rock City" is now wireless, so you can post from there!

  10. These are great suggestions.

I have a theme cache under review. The idea is to swap a lure. The lure container (marked as such) is inside the larger cache, and visitors can swap a lure and/or swap shwag if they'd like--or drop off a fish trophy photo...or a fish story...or just sign the log.

  11. BUT, Burningman is supposed to be the personification of the internet. At least it was when it began, so your proposal runs counter to that of the original Burningman concept..... Irony.... :)

Hmmm. Don't think that was the purpose of the Festival, really.

I've been to the playa three times, and think it would be a great idea--independently of the geocaching.com site, of course, for reasons described above.

Placing an announcement at the bulletin board at Center Camp including coords would be one possible starting point. You can get in contact with various camps or art installation folks through the Burningman forum, or all those silly places like MySpace, Tribes, etc.

I'm taking this year off, but plan to return in 2007. That year, I hope to make a Waymarking route for good spots to visit on the way south from the PNW (including Summer Lake Hot Springs, a good swimming hole near Crater Lake, a great spot to rockhound for opals, another to rockhound for obsidian, etc.)

Your first year is always the best. Have fun, and take care of yourself. (And to the others, it's only a drug fest if you want it to be.)
