I noticed one of the local caches was a virtual one and I would like to do this but it was from 2004. Would it still be going on? If not how long are they good for?

I would like to start geocaching but I just don't have any idea where to start, I do have a gps but are there easy things to find first and then more difficult. I live in florida. thanks for your help.
