  1. Being new & planning our first hide sometime in the future had many laughs while reading through these. I think right now I have to agree with wolfslady (back on page 1) when she posted "A magnitic strip with a wet log on the back" We have a CO around here who has many of these stuck everywhere & most of them are all wet.
  2. We don't rush out for a FTF but our first time was funny for us. We are usually only able to go out caching one day a week, usually on the weekend. So a few weeks ago during the week I had mapped out our drive for the upcoming weekend. Bingo! The evening before we were to leave we seen a new cache... in the same area we'd already planned to visit. We'd already planned to wake & leave early since we usually make a whole day of caching & the nearest for this trip was about 45 minute drive away. Closer to bedtime I double checked to see if it'd been found yet. Yes, someone had found it already. But, to my surprise there was another new cache listed... in a complete different direction as I'd previously mapped out. We decided we'd attempt that one. So I cleared the GPSr & quickly uploaded a new list. Yeh! We got there for our first (and only FTF). The following weekend there was an event for planning the upcoming State Challenge. Since we are still new we decided to attend. While there we met the lady who had obtained the first FTF we had planned. We all had a great laugh when I told her about us changing plans and traveling west instead of north.
  3. Since our "baby" is almost 21yo I was kind of wondering the same thing. Thanks for the topic! We'll be heading out for our (usual) full day of geocaching & will stop past the store to pick up some of the things mentioned. A lot of the local caches aren't even big enough for hot wheel type cars but since we'll be going away from this area hopefully we find some caches larger than nano & micro. I have made lots of miniature things from polymer clay that we'll take along as well (placing them & a little note in their own zippy-bag).
  4. I know that feeling. I think ours expires next week. MUST figure renewal into the budget That is why we only go for the ones nearby when we have "only a short time" to look. We usually go out weekly or so, away from home & make a full day of it about an hr from home. Yes, eventually even those within an hr will be done & we'll have to go even further. But for now it works for us
  5. Oh my, terrible news Not sure if it's the same man that our team has watched on YouTube but sad nonetheless. I'm sure he'll be missed by many
  6. It's my first GPSr but I absolutely love my Magellan Explorer GC
  7. Mine does that, too. I just click "cancel", the box disappears & I then follow through with the downloads.
  8. Wow, so glad that when my kids asked what I wanted for birthday gift & I said "just a simple GeoMateJr will do" that they went on & got me the Magellan Explorist GC instead. Before that I'd only spent time looking at google maps & taking notes on paper. Didn't do too bad that way, but absolutely love this unit
  9. As a new cacher (99 finds) I think those are excellent "should knows" I agree with adding the ones that The A-Team posted. I have also found that especially if we have "problems" finding a cache if we read the comments a lot of times we find "hints" Edited to add: I also agree with learning more & expanding knowledge before actually planting a cache. We have some across many that we feel were just thrown out there for no other reason than to add to their "cache hide" number. Then too many times those are the ones that receive little or no maintenance. We are planning to plant our first cache. But just in the planning stage because we want it to be a good one in a meaningful place. We know a place we'd love, but there is another that although it's across a small hwy, we think it'd be considered too close. Oh well, will think of something better
  10. Oh wow, we've not run across that as of yet. We only started using a GPSr on our 53rd or so find and between then & now (or 99th) we have always been right on target within a few feet. Thanks for the heads-up
  11. I know it isn't either that you mentioned, but I absolutely love the Magellan eXplorist GC that my kids gave me for birthday. Worth looking into I think.
  12. How many are there? How much are you wanting for them? We are just NE of you a bit & may be down a little closer in the near(ish) future.
  13. I just received the Magellan eXplorist GC & love it
  14. Just checking to see if there is still anyone around the area. I know there used to be one (CedarCreekGeocachers), but the website isn't up & running
  15. Post removed... just realized this was the "NorthWest" region... sorry
  16. Not sure if they are allowed but we have seen one in a few cache and actually thought it would be good (if available) to use those to help reduce moisture. I'm sure someone will come along soon & give the correct answer.
  17. My husband chose this name because we Square Dance
  18. Same as Mark+Karen said; we, too, have had to go back a few times on some of the cache. Thanks Chief301 for suggesting the Cool Cache Containers thread. I am definitely going to look into that.
  19. Keep at it; it'll get better I'm sure We are new & yesterday started off great then BAM! then only found 2 of the next 7. As others have said, those micro & nano can be very difficult.
  20. I was just telling hubby today that I don't remember where I heard about Geocaching even though it was just a few weeks ago LOL Was going to wait until we can get a gps but decided to start without one while he was off work for a week. Still don't have a gps but we don't think we've done too bad. Have gone out 4 different days totaling 32 cache. Have to make a short (1 hr each way) road trip Friday & already have a list of places to stop
  21. New here, too & still without a gps. Started actually searching a few days ago & have done pretty good so far (12/28 5 cache found & 12/29 10 cache found - plus a couple letterboxes) by just using google maps, descriptions & sometimes comments people posted after finding it. Know where many more are & actually drove past them today because hubby wanted to head home w/o stopping
