  1. They could have argued that they already agreed to sale at a certain price, and would honor them, but all orders henceforth would be consumated at Garmin's Gestapo enforced price. Many other outfits honored their pre-order prices. Provantage punked out.
  2. I wonder if anyone has received a 76Cx and noticed the same phantom wandering syndrome?
  3. I saw the writing on the wall late last Thursday night... ordered from Lake Powel @ $373ish.. Cancelled Provantage on Friday morning. Opened my 60Cx about 2.5 hours ago.. playing with it now. I see Lake Powel now has it for $449 with free overnight shipping and a "kick-back" good at your choice of 7 online outlets.. Still reasonable deals to be found out there. ETA: oh yeah, I put some "feedback" on Provantage's handling of this pre-sale on resellerratings as well.
  4. That's the crux... I personally think a compass in the GPSr is pretty much a waste of battery life and $$$... The toughtest choice would be between getting a Legend Cx or a GPSMAP60Cx. You get the expandable memory with both. You save darn near $190 going with the Legend Cx, but the 60Cx has a better basemap, better layout of buttons (IMHO) and a better receiver. You also get a serial port on the 60, which is only important if you have a legacy computer or if you have the possibility of interfacing the device with other marine electronics. It's a tough call.... Look over the specs of all the models... Determine what you're using GPS for now, and what you MIGHT be using it for in the next 3 years, then make your decision.
  5. Oh, one other thing... Is the basemap resident in other memory or does it reside on the factory included transflash card? I ask because if it's on the card, obviously you'd have to dump the card to your PC prior to installing a larger card if you want to keep the basemap.
  6. Thanks Cory. I'm sitting here looking at these transflash cards and thinking they feel pretty fragile. Maybe it's a mental thing... the last removable memory I played with was compact flash and some memory sticks in a Sony camera... These transflash cards are MICROSCOPIC!!!!!! ETA: Thanks Fuzzy, my confidence is growing. Can't wait for monday evening.. my 60Cx will be here!
  7. From looking at the online "owner's manual" on the Garmin website, the pictures describing the slot that holds the transflash card has me wondering about its ease of use and durability. Has anyone that already has an X unit in their hands tried swapping out the cards, and if so, what are your impressions about how long the slot would last in terms of number of card swaps? I ask because I happen to have access to 128 MB cards for cheap thru my employer, and wouldn't really mind the "hassle" of swapping cards IF the unit looks like it can handle it.... Otherwise I'll just find a line on a pair of 512's on pricegrabber if the port looks flimsy. TIA
  8. I tried to cancel via email.. It doesn't work.. Call them, easy cancel, I wan't on hold 2 minutes. They seem to be getting a LOT of cancellations on the new garmins.
  9. Yeah, placed a call after the expected ship date changed from 2/1/06 to "unknown".... The were unsure if they'd actually get the 60cx or CSx in at all.. I promptly cancelled the order. Placed an order from lake powell, and have a tracking # that claims I'll have a cx on Monday. We shall see.
  10. Looks like Provantage is getting their wrists slapped by Garmin... It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. I have no intention of cancelling my order on a 60cx unless I can match the price at a vendor that has them in stock. If I end up waiting a few months, I'll manage... besides, it'll allow time for someone else to be the "beta testers" for the new unit.
  11. One very important point to consider... If you rely on your PDA for daily business use, taking it caching could be a BAD IDEA. I have a LifeDrive that I totally depend on for work. I run cachemate on it to go quasi paperless. I use it for tracking logs/hints.. but I leave it in the truck and take my Legend C with me for the final hunt. I thought about a BT GPSr to go with it, but I cannot afford the expense or down time of losing the PDA. Carefully consider what you need your palm for on a routine basis before taking it in the field. If you rely on it daily, you might be better served with a dedicated GPSr.
  12. Any Palmwith more than 2MB of onboard RAM will do, though I'd recommend 8MB minimum.... That being said, I have a T3 that I'd be willing to part with for 2 50cal ammo cans in trade.
  13. No lock in a clear sight line setting = RMA. Send it back.
  14. Hmm.. timed out during the post... here's what it is supposed to say! I know I saw a related thread a while back, but can't find it.... And I can't find it on the Garmin website... I'm looking for the Marine POI to keep on hand as while I like having land maps of my shore haunts, I still find need for the VERY basic marine poi info that was included (and subsequently over-written) with the GPSr. TIA Pat
  15. I didn't catch where you live, but one of the easiest methods is to simply bury it about 18" deep. Dig it up and check on it every other month. Nature will run its course. The organisms in the soil will get the "easy bits" first. Once the "meat" is gone, boil it in water to sterilize it and scrub the remainder off with a used toothbrush. A quick dip in a mild (50 - 1) bleach solution will make it bright. A couple quick coats of varish will preserve it. Requires some labor, but it's one of the easiest ways... Outside of that, boiling it in a mild borax solution works VERY well. But you definitely want to do this outside. I do my own "english" mounts of deer skulls/antlers... The bury method is my favorite, but if it's something I'm putting together for a relative or friend that lacks patience, I'll grab the old turkey fryer and a spare pot and boil it up... I'm just a shade-tree... but I have a hunch there's some taxidermists here that may chime in and we'll both learn something new!
  16. I'm planning on dropping some of my homemade flies in some caches near fish-rich areas... probably going to put half a dozen in a ziplock along with a note containing my email address and asking for reports on how they worked for the users... I mainly fly fish the salt, but recently got into trout, so there's plenty of "target rich environments" nearby. ETA: These drops would be in addition to SWAG. (I have to remember not everyone fishes, and gotta keep the kiddies in mind too!)
  17. Before this gets moved........... You can put auto-routing maps on it, like City Select or City Navigator. Yes, you can put TOPO maps on it, very helpful for some of the more difficult terrain maps. The TOPO maps will also show more side streets than the base map, but they aren't routable. Can't give any first hand experience for 3 and 4....
  18. Dimensions: 4.10" X 1.20" X 0.87" To house 2 AAA batts and only have 1 MB of memory? Sounds like an aweful waste of space to me...
  19. Easy upgrade... $20 or less for a DVD rom, available from many online sources... I'm partial to Newegg. I've heard you can call Garmin and they'll send you a CD-Rom version.
  20. There's a micro under 2 miles from my home, of the parking lot variety. Twas my first find. Every 8th or 10th entry on the log sheet was "POLICE"...... Think Big Brother isn't watching this game?
  21. I just placed an order too.... Though I must admit I'm not feeling all that optimistic the price will be honored... It'll be a sweet deal though, if we do get 'em for that price!!!
  22. GSAK. Combined with Cachemate it can't be beat.
  23. I think that is the "heading" indicator...
  24. Abington, PA (SEPA) checking in. (Weekends in CMP NJ during the warmer months. heheh)
