Simple solution for anyone who objects to caches placed on property without permission is to not visit such caches. I suppose that proof of written permission could be required before traditional caches are approved ... Huh? Oh, this thread isn't about traditional cachers who routinely place caches in locations not within the guidelines of Geocaching? Okay. Let me try again... Simple solution for anyone who objects to vitual caches is to not attempt to locate them. For those of us who enjoy going someplace we would not have otherwise, enjoy the hunt for the sake of the hunt, and prefer zero environmental impact with lower risk of exposure to the sorts of things documented in the Bad Things Found In A Geocache, please let us enjoy our abberations.

My eTrex is well and healthy again as verified by 24 hours of no problems. The master reset seems to have done the job, but I also pried out the battery clips. Thanks to all!

Got a reply back from Garmin: Thank you for contacting Garmin. It sounds as if the software has developed a glitch. To fix it, we will probably have to do a Master Reset (MR). Unfortunately, a MR will erase any waypoints or routes that you have saved in the unit. If you can upload these to a computer, you should be able to reload them after the MR. The keying sequence for a Master Reset is UP+PAGE+ENTER+ON (Must be held for 5 seconds) Thanks again for contacting Garmin. $99 to repair a unit that cost me $99.95 and can be replaced for less - makes me consider buying a Magellan replacement except they probably have similar repair costs. Haven't yet heard back from Garmin tech support. I am using rechargables, but the same brand I've used for more than a year. Looser battery contacts, however, would explain the symptoms. Looks like I will be in the market for a new eTrex, Gecko, or such. Thanks for the help everyone, Number 6

Thanks for the fast reply, Team GPSaxophone. I have to hit the power button to get it back up and it cycles through the startup sequence. I assume that means something other than the display connector, but I'll check out that possibility further. I'm way out of warranty. Any idea what Garmin charges for repairs or should I just resign myself to finding a good deal on a new unit? Number 6

I had that problem too. I'm still in trial mode and assumed that had something to do with it. I built my files in EasyGPS for Groundspeak then opened them in ExpertGPS to see the maps, etc. I also haven't been able to download any new maps or photos today (Sunday) due to "Map Server Error." I'm running version 1.3.6 which I downloaded from the Topographix site on Friday. Number 6

Anyone have this experience and have a solution? My yellow Etrex has started powering down for no apparent reason. I have swapped batteries and ensured they are fresh. Sometimes it shuts off without touching it and other times it shuts down when I push a button other than the power button such as menu select. I'm afraid that repairing it will cost more than a new one. I haven't yet heard anything back from the query I sent Garmin tech support (I sent it over the weekend). Thanks, Number 6

One more try to help here - the reality of the safety of Geocaching is not relevant to the custodians of public property until the protection of their self interest can be demonstrated to them through the responsible incremental actions of constituents. Skiers in Colorado have apparently done a very good job of doing that. Rock climbers and rappelers also seem to understand how to accomplish their goal. Perhaps a local climbing club was responsible for getting those activities permitted and would be willing to share lessons learned. Be Seeing You!

To my non-Christian geocaching friends: I am a Christian and would like to address something to other Christian geocachers. Please forgive any appearance of offense to anyone or misunderstanding regarding what I wish to say. You might even want to skip the rest of this post. To my Christian Brothers and Sisters: Please do not take this as directed towards any individual, it is motivated by many postings in this forum. As defined by the administrator, participating in geocaching through Geocaching.com is a secular activity with specific rules and guidelines. Though not a ruler or government per se, Geocaching.com is an authority. I therefore believe we must, as good witnesses, obey the established rules or withdraw from the activity (see Romans 13:1-7). Furthermore, as a Christian, I am offended when ambush tactics are used to share what we obviously believe is the most important news anyone could ever hear - God loves us, forgives us, and wants to give us Eternal Life. Nevertheless, telling people about God's love for the world is too important to be cloaked in contention and deceit. Yes, there are many cases where such tactics have seemed to lead people to Christ. I believe, however, from personal experience, observations, and reading the Bible that many more would accept the good news of Salvation, Forgiveness, and Eternal Life if it were not presented as something to fear, something of so little value that it must be presented surreptitiously. Let our lights shine, be cities set on hills. Don't hide your light in an ammo box. Let the world know what we stand for, as good and true witnesses to our faith. No doubt, there are many who will disagree with what I've said. For those non-Christian members who read this far, please do not consider my message a hypocritical evangelical ambush. Troll Guard sounds like a good idea to me. What do you think of somehow extending it to the forums? Something like you must have at least one or two confirmed finds and/or hides to post anywhere except in a newbie area for people wanting advice on getting started, etc. I'm tired of being troll bait and also seeing others fall for it. A human explained humor to a computer in Robert Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. He said that playing a joke on someone the first time can be funny, but it isn't funny twice. I agree that cache fees should go directly back to the parks and that the current situation is far from ideal. My suggestion comparing the possibility of geocaching licenses to hunting and fishing licenses has nothing to do with the current policy. What I am suggesting as something to work towards is a policy would connect a geocacher to a formal acceptance of rules no more invasive than what Geocaching.com already provides (which is a pretty good balance between fun and responsibility). Collected fees should go to support the parks in the manner that I assume hunting and fishing license fees support those venues (do they?). The State will probably want some kind of notification of each cache location which could be easily handled by mailing in the cache page. As an aside, please be respectful to government officials you encounter or contact. I've read in the forums of instances where geocachers were successfully working the system only to have someone go off on a ranger or politician about how we own the parks and they have no right to tell us how to use them. Yes, we own the parks though they own the rules and have the responsiblity of managing the properties on our behalf. This new policy should indicate that it is possible to work the system though it does take work to achieve the ideal. Number 6 has left the soap box. Be Seeing You!
