  1. Isn't that what the difficulty/terrain ratings are for? The owner specified it'd be a climb and he gave high ratings for both difficulty and terrain. Are Guernsey cachers so unable to fend for themselves that they need additional guidance? They must be made of tougher stuff in Jersey, I never saw any of these histrionics when I cached there. And speaking of singling out, if you're that concerned about Guernsey caches that may not be child friendly, why have you singled out this cache? What about Chateau Gateau, or On the Edge, or any of the kayak caches around the island? lol ... love your post and your infatuation with Jersey ... obviously not read all the relevant previous ones ... as previously stated, kayak ones are fine, have also done Chateau Gateau and On the Edge without any qualms ... they're not the same at all ... but feel free to continue the bashing
  2. I agree with this. If it was me, I would delete the rude notes, as well as the fake "found it" logs. A cache page is not a forum thread, and it's inappropriate to use it as such. Mind you, the cache owner should remove that bit that basically said it was okay to write notes: That is a bad, bad thing to put on a cache page...as witnessed by people bashing the cache hide. And, yes, the cache owner can edit the cache page, as well as delete logs. B. Just got to post a note on a similar hide in Idaho today -- seems like new cachers need to do some more reading of the rules. Wow, that is really strange (and interesting). People have been harping back and forth about that one for over 5 years!! Is that really what happens when someone puts out a tree climbing cache, forgets about it, and never maintains it? I don't know, I guess I've never come across such a situation before. Vile messages? You mean here in this forum, or you have actually received emails over this situation? Emails ... now deleted; and profile settings adjusted. Forum posts, whilst some are possibly able to be read as aggressive, have been helpful ... even those referring to other similar caches elsewhere, and an innocent mistake has now been adjusted.
  3. Agreed all round, and lessons learned by all; and the "Write Note" post wording has been revised. The point was simply to recognise that the GC community here is largely young families with small kids - as evidenced by the predominance of tupperware boxes hidden where young kids can find them. Easy finds for most reasonable adults in most cases. Therefore, a cache of this sort needs to be flagged as such to identify it as outside the range of the majority. We have no issue with difficult cache placement; indeed the challenge is more than welcomed - the issue is simply with the seeming safety issues around it. Perhaps a little tolerance all round is the solution; particularly as we seem to be the sole target of the criticism although others posted similarly. Rest assured that the volume of vile messages received is an indication of far more extreme views than those posted in the log. Time for everyone to move on.
  4. Thanks for the post ... seems like we weren't so far out of line after all!
  5. There is no requirement to use attributes at all. And I suspect when you got to GZ, you realized the safety issues, and realized they exceeded your level of experience/expertise/comfort level and you decided not to go for it. Not all caches can (or should be) found by everyone. But to go on and say "in our opinion, this is a stupid, and unsafe, place to put a cache. The cache owner seems to consider the location suitable given it's rating. We shall have to agree to disagree." is wrong. (emphasis mine) Would you consider any cache requiring special equipment (such as scuba or climbing gear) "stupid"? Probably not. If there is a cache I cannot get, I wait until I can or ignore it. There's a cache that requires rappelling down to. A group of us tried reachign it from below, but were not able to. So, I'll be back. I won't get all bent out of shape over it. Agreed ... perhaps you should have read our full post before quoting a selected part of it?
  6. Thank you, that seems a polite and reasonable way to respond to the logs. "What a dadgum stupid place to put a cache! Found, but not prepared to get to it to sign the log!" I have read another post from the same cacher which I also found to be quite rude, when they were complaining about caches going missing and people not looking after them properly, I did point out I found the cache they couldn't... Maybe they're just old and grumpy?! We quite agree ... hence the "Write Note" post ... and as for the CO being polite, then they simply were not, and have made no contact at all! As for being grumpy, perhaps if you had actually contacted us on the supposed "rude posts" you would have had a response. It is interesting to note that we have had no contact from you before, and that there is a groundswell of opinion that caches are going missing on a regular basis!
  7. For all those self-opinionated responders out there: Frankly, judging by the responses it has nothing at all to do with the majority of you if we consider this a find or not. What you do not know is the location of the cache, or the area surrounding it. If you did, you would understand the reason for the "Write note" post; it is not a "found it" post! What we have said is that we can see the cache, have photographed it (for our reference), and will be removing it from the "unfound caches" in our list. The cache is not marked as accesible only with "special equipment"; unlike those marked (quite correctly) as requiring kayaks, climbing, or scuba equipment. Those are appropriately marked, and trying to access them is up to the individual, their abilities, and their equipment. This one is simply marked as difficult terrain, with some climbing required; frankly whilst that is correct, there are a lot more safety issues that should be disclosed in order to ensure safe access to it. Indeed, whilst we have kayaks we have not posted on any cache that we have not physically signed the logbook, and would have no intention to do so. So, before jumping onto a wobbly bandwagon, you may wish to be certain of your facts first. Indeed, as far as the abusive emails from across the pond are concerned you have simply been reported for your abuse. Remember, each person has their own safety limits, this cache exceeds ours, and hence it has not been posted as a find on geocaching.com, but has been posted as an "ignore"; therefore it has nothing to do with anyone else!
  8. We've both upgraded to ios6 on the iPhone. The Geocaching app has updated as well. BUT, I'm still using Google maps! The app allows you to set Google maps as the default. Hopefully this well help; unless of course I don't understand your issue correctly!
  9. Have visited several caches over the weekend; a number had trackables listed in the inventory. BUt, in every case they were no longer there. What is the protocol for reporting / handling this?
  10. In the App, do the following: -Tap the "Menu" button at the very top -Tap "Settings" -Scroll down to the "Serach Options" section, and tap on "My Finds" -Tap "Exclude My Finds" -Tap "Close" at the very top Your finds will no longer come up in any searches. As far as "identifying", if you leave the above setting on "Include My Finds", your finds will show with a checkmark on the cache symbol in list view, and with a smiley in map view. Many thanks; I'd set to "exclude" and saved; but, it looks like the app had glitched / frozen and I've had to kill the phone and restart it. Now it all works as you describe.
  11. Is there an easy way of removing / identifying found caches from the iPhone app so that as you find them the number showing on the map only reflects the number still to find in the given area?
  12. I went out today (as a newbie) and found 3 local caches using my iPhone. I logged each as being found using the app, but on looking at the listings tonight those events don't show. Please would someone tell me (politely)the stupid mistake I made?
  13. New to the caching lark in Guernsey. Started today using the free iPhone app to see if it was something I'd get into. Yep ... looks like a go to me; located and physically found 3 caches within 3 miles of home inside an hour, all on foot! The iPhone seems good, but I'm going to try the 2 Garmin devices I have (Foretrex 201 and Forerunner 305) before going too far. Just how many caches are there in Guernsey? Is it worth buying the paid iPhone app and a different device?
