  1. I see that it has been a very long time since you made this post. During that time, there have been several upgrades to GeoNiche, at least one of which has improved support for Garmin iQue. Have you tried it recently? You can get the trial version at http://www.RayDarLLC.com/trial_download
  2. Thanks for your interest in my program. GeoNiche uses the full screen when in Navigation Mode (which is the default mode that comes up when you install the trial version). To access the other parts of the program, tap your handheld's menu icon which, on a lifedrive, is the third icon from the left in the row of icons at the bottom of the screen. The "hard buttons" on a lifedrive are the ones that surround the oval, as well as the up, down, left, and right buttons of the oval itself. You can assign a wide variety of functions to these buttons. For example, you could make them hop to different parts of the program so that you don't need to tap the menu icon. I have recently added a .pdf user guide to GeoNiche which addresses this very question as the first item in the "TroubleShooting" section. Happy Caching!
  3. That is correct. In addition to keeping track of your geocaches, GeoNiche also communicates with your GPS receiver to point the way to your cache once you have left your vehicle. It can also be used (by a passenger) while driving to choose a nearby cache to visit. It has many more uses beyond geocaching. Many people use a program, such as TomTom, for on-road navigation and then switch to GeoNiche when the hiking starts. I, however, use GeoNiche even when on the streets.
  4. You could try my program GeoNiche. It comes with a Java application (EasyNiche) that imports geocaching data in a very straight-forward manner. Complete instructions for importing geocaches with it are here.
  5. My program GeoNiche is a complete paperless solution. It is designed to communicate with your GPS receiver so there is no need to input cache coordinates in your GPS receiver. It is highly customizable and can point the way to your cache with a large arrow. To get the most from it, however, you will have to connect your Zire to your GPSr. ((RayDar))
  6. I am pleased to announce the newest version of my geocaching software for PalmOS based PDA's. GeoNiche V1.42 has the following changes: Improved 5-way navigator handling Fixed "Sound while near" preferences item Fixed infinite re-connection loop problem with Bluetooth GPS receivers Fixed various issues related to text editing Fixed crash related to powering down when communicating with Bluetooth GPS receiver Improved EasyNiche parsing ((RayDar))
  7. With a Palm and a program like mine, GeoNiche, you can not only keep detailed descriptions with you, but you can have nearby caches shown on a graphical display with an arrow pointing the way to your next geocaching adventure. ((RayDar))
  8. All Palms connect to Windows based PC's. If you want a deluxe paperless caching experience, connect your GPS reciever to your Palm (or better yet, get a GPS reciver that snaps on to your Palm) and use my program GeoNiche. ((RayDar))
  9. I am pleased to announce a new version of my Palm-based geocaching software GeoNiche. This version has the following improvements: More reliably re-connects to a Bluetooth GPS receiver after power-down Fixed <ele> element in GPX export Sound on Approach no longer beeps when not moving Fixed problem with unregistered version not importing short merge files Allows NMEA strings without checksums Ignores duplicate NMEA strings Ignores false latitude and longitude Improved Garmin iQue support Modified to work after telenav software re-configures its Bluetooth GPS receiver
  10. There was a recent major upgrade to GeoNiche.
  11. GeoNiche is a 100% paperless solution for Geocaching with your Palm and a compatible GPS receiver.
  12. With a Palm, a compatible GPS receiver, and GeoNiche, you can geocache 100% paperlessly. If you wanted to take the integration even further, you could combine your cellphone with the Palm. There are people who geocache on their phone with GeoNiche, a Bluetooth GPS receiver, and a Treo 650 or 700p. This reduces pocket-clutter by one item and ensures that you always have cache info with you. Some say that you may not want to risk damaging an expensive Palm while geocaching. Personally, I have been caching for many years with various Palms and I haven't damaged one yet. But then again, I don't fall down much and I secure my palm before crossing a rope bridge over a waterfall.
  13. The older non-color Palms (like the Vx) are much easier to see in bright sunlight. However, you might have trouble finding a GPS receiver specifically for them and have to go with a cable that connects to a non-Palm GPS receiver. In either case, you'll need some software for Geocaching. GeoNiche works on everything from an old Palm Vx to the newest Lifedrive and T|X.
  14. I started, years ago with: Palm Vx Streetfinder GPS GeoNiche These days, I use Palm Tungsten TX Globsat BT-338 Bluetooth GPS Receiver GeoNiche
  15. I don't think it fits your price, but a Treo 650 (cheaper than a 700p) with a Bluetooth GPS receiver, KMaps, and GeoNiche would do everything you want.
  16. If you get a Bluetooth GPS receiver, you can go completely paperless with an program like GeoNiche.
  17. GeoNiche is a complete paperless solution. It runs on PalmsOS as old as 3.5. You could get something like old Palm Vx on ebay and attach a GPS receiver, if you like. Of course, the newer the model you get, the more features and better performance you will see.
  18. The bare essentials: PDA Bluetooth GPS Receiver GeoNiche Bag of Geogoodies ((RayDar))
  19. With a completely-paperless solution, like GeoNiche, you can load all the caches in an area (say where you are going camping) and only read the descriptions of those that you find yourself close to. This works well for casual on-the-fly geocaching. No organizational skills required! ((RayDar))
  20. I use GeoNiche, for Palm. It automatically downloads the cache information and has built-in hint decoding. It can also communicate with a GPS receiver to show you the way to the caches. It's a paperless solution.

  22. I am pleased to announce the release of V1.40 of GeoNiche, the GPS system for off-road enthusiasts and geocachers. This release has many improvements and bug fixes, including: Turn-by-Turn mode Memory of previous Bluetooth GPS Receiver selection Points of interest and driving directions importation from Google Maps Sending of targets/routes via Bluetooth Exportation of GPX files to memory card, internal memory, Bluetooth, and E-mail More information and CANCEL buttons on "Please Wait" messages Color presets Various enhancements for PalmOS v5.4 Garmin iQue support For a full list of changes, see http://www.RayDarLLC.com/update_history.html
  23. The next version of GeoNiche may support the Garmin iQue. We are looking for some beta testers with the Palm-based version of the Garmin iQue. If you are interested, contact Groundspeak@RayDarLLC.com Thanks.
  24. Hello, I am the author of GeoNiche. The premier PalmOS based GPS enabled program for geocaching. I am currently looking for beta testers with a PalmOS based handheld and a Compact Flash based GPS receiver to test the next version of GeoNiche which may support these type of GPS Receivers (depending on how the beta testing goes). As with all beta testing, you may receive a version of the program that crashes and/or loses data. On the other hand, you might also receive a fully functional program before it is available to others. If you are willing to help, and you have a Compact Flasch based GPS receiver for your PalmOS handheld, please send me an EMail message. More information about GeoNiche is located at: http://www.RayDarLLC.com Thanks ((RayDar))
