  1. Yep, I'm one of those left at the starting gate. I ordered a Vista Hcx to replace my Legend C. I do not own any map software and am itching to use some. I'm sure it will make a world of difference in trying to find some of those tricky to get to urban caches. I am not willing to pay $125 for CN v8 and another $50 for the 2008 update. So I guess that gives us new unit owners two choices. 1. Buy CN v8 which uses older maps and POI's. 2. Wait for the CN 2008 complete version which may or may not come out in the unforseeable future. Not sure which to do.
  2. Are you kidding me! Geocaching has to be one of the least expensive hobbies around. You need a GPSr for minimally $100. That's really it. One could enjoy geocaching with just that. I did my first few hundred caches with just that. Of course there are several things you could get to make it easier, such as a premium subscription to GC.com, software like GSAK and perhaps a PALM. A few months ago I made the switch to paperless caching with a used PALM that I bought off of EBAY for around $20. Compare that to equipment and membership fees for any other sport or recreation. Golf, boating, flying, RC vehicles, photography, backpacking, softball. All these cost much more than geocaching. Let's take my other favorite activity running. A pair of good running shoes cost about $100. I get less than 6 months of milage out of a pair of shoes. Entry fees into a race can run from $20 to $100 depending on the distance run. 5K races are usually about $25 and marathons are about $75 these days. Enter several races a year, like I do, and even running is more than geocaching. Don't give me the argument about needing a computer or car for geocaching. Those are secondary items that you already have. I have never heard of a person buying a computer or car only for geocaching. Using that logic are you going to include the cost of your clothes and food you eat while geocaching? Face it, geocaching is one of the cheapest recreations you can have.
  3. When I find a new cache I log "found it". Subsequently when I go to that cache to drop off a travel bug I just leave a note. I have noticed that some people log "found it" again. Does this "double logging" add to your found numbers? Of course this brings up the larger issue of cheating and geo-ethics. As we mature in our caching ability I have found that most people develop their own geo-ethics of what is right and wrong. This recreation has no geo-cops (although I have met a few tough reviewers). If you wanted to you could sit home all day and log finds on GC.com that you have never been to. When caching with my brother we would take turns hopping out of the car to get park and grabs in parking lots. After, I felt guilty about logging caches that I did not actually actively participate in finding. I adjusted my geo-ethics accordingly. My questions are 1. Do you double log on the same cache and 2. How has your geo-ethics evolved or what are your own rules and limitations?
  4. Of course generally one should always sign the log. With that being said people can do what ever they want. There are no geo-cops out there (but I've seen some tough reviewers). If you wanted to you could just go onto GC.com and log thousands of caches you have never been to. Your own geo-ethics are up to you. I have placed about 20 caches and have never retrieved a log and checked it with the online logs. It would be interesting to do so though!
  5. Is this already available with 60 & 76 Cx CSx? Is it a big plus? Also the number of waypoints has changed from 500 to 1000.
  6. Tiger GPS has the series listed as release for mid July. The prices are as follows: Legend HCx $226.08 Vista GCx $251.20. I am not sure if these prices are presale prices or will be the final retail price but they are the current cheapest prices that I have seen. Sign me up for a Vista HCx. http://www.tigergps.com/garminvistahcx.html Another issue may be Mapsource compatability. I am getting conflicting information from the Garmin website. On the products page it lists that the new series will use City Navigator NT. I'm not sure what it will end up using. Looks good though.
  7. I get all my best FTF's after the wife and kids have gone to bed. Then when my brother is in town we do some serious geocaching. We will go out for the day and do a numbers game. We once found 80 in a day.
  8. Ahhhhhh. Quickly delete this thread before my wife sees it. At first my family enjoyed geocaching. It was neat at first. My kids like the happy meal junk that you could trade in a regular sized cache. But over time their outlook slowly changed. Now it is moans and groans if we go caching. So mostly now I just go by myself or drag the kids out hiking. They enjoy hiking once they get out there. My wife honestly enjoys the time alone. So I guess it is not so bad...... Now about that new GPSr that I want to get.
  9. To be honest I am not familar with EasyGPS. I do however love GSAK. I use it to do everything. I use it of course to create databases with my pocketquerries. I also use it to send then to my Palm via CacheMate. If I start to use POI's instead of waypoints GSAK can do that also. Of course I can make GSAK as simple or detailed as I would like. You can sort by any number of details, distance, direction, name, difficulty, ect... My money is on GSAK.
  10. Sorry for post in incorrect area. Question has been moved to GPS units and software.
  11. I am looking to update my caching technology. I currently have a Garmin Legend C and love it. I also love paperless caching with my simple Palm m125 (best 20$ on ebay I ever spent). I take long summer trips and would love the capability of having over 500 waypoints. I am considering one of the "x" series with an SD slot and using Points of Interest (POI). I now see the Garmin iQue 3000 which is a Palm PDA and Garmin GPSr all in one. On Garmin's website they list that the iQue 3000 can store 10,000 waypoints as well as uses an SD card. They also claim touch screen in car navigation. Has anyone used the iQue 3000 for geocaching. My question would be does it have similar features as the other hand held GPSr's and how accurate is it's reception. It is WAAS enabled. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  13. I currently use GSAK to dump my 500 caches into my Garmin legend C. When traveling to multiple cities it requires me to bring a laptop to use GSAK to reload a new batch of 500. Can we use the POI loader with GSAK and gpx files? Would incoorporating GSAK just add another layer of complexity?
  14. I also have had difficulty with the site. Specifically this appears to happen on the weekends when most of us do the majority of our caching and logging. Geocaching.com is the backbone of the recreation. We need a strong website. Perhaps they do need to buy more bandwith, servers or what ever. As geocachers we need to encourage all other geocachers to become premium members in order to help out the website. I'm sure the site costs lots of money to run and keep running.
  15. If you are going to manualy enter in a waypoint with the Legend C simply hold down the 4 way rocker key on the front of the reciever. This will bring up a waypoint screen and you simply change the info to your desired waypoint. Good luck.
