  1. Well ever since entering this whole GeoCaching community and learning about coins I've been thinking about making one myself. I'm guessing most "newbies" dream of this as well. It's been difficult trying to come up with 1 design to fit my whole family, we all have such diverse interests. Then it hit me...

The coin I want to have made would be for a specific cause, one that is unfortunately near and dear to my heart. In September of 2004 I went into premature labor with identicle twin girls. I was only 23 and a half weeks pregnant. I lost my little girls. Shortly thereafter I learned about "A Group". I had a team for the "Group" campaign last year and will walk again this year, raising money for "The Group". I was thinking how great it would be not only to raise money for the cause but also to spread awareness by means of coins traveling through caches, GC meetups and the like.

My biggest questions are: How do I get started with this? And would people really be interested in paying for one of these coins? The cost of them would be slightly higher than some I have seen here so that the profit would go back to "The Group."

If anyone has minted coins specifically for a charity type of fundraiser, I would LOVE your help!

    Thank you.

***I deleted the Charity name, I'm not sure if that will allow this thread to exist***

  2. First - Welcome to Geocaching!

Not sure what you mean by "people's personal collections": Is this their list found items, or what's in their inventory?

The Jeep contest is over, but the ones remaining out there still travel from cache to cache like a regular travel bug. If someone finds one and logs it, the icon will show in their account.

You'll find different opinions on this ... some folks will keep the Jeep as a collectable since the contest is over, others feel they should keep moving. Many of the Jeeps were kept in personal collections and not logged even when the contest was going on. Personally, I don't pay as much attention to the Jeeps as some folks I know. I treat them like any otehr travel bug.

By Personal Collections I mean, I have visted some site of cachers who collect signature items, geocoins and other misc and have seen these jeeps in them as well.

The jeeps are pretty neat and I'd love to add one to my daughters collection of items, but I don't want to do the wrong thing. I just wasn't sure what is right and wrong. It's confusing when you see seasoned cachers with them in their collection. I don't want to be greedy, I just want her to have a nice collection. I do have a jeep in my possesion and am planning to bring it to a meetup. So I'm really looking for an answer as to what I should do in the future? I hope that makes sense...

And by the way thanks for the welcome, I LOVE caching now. Our daughter is 10 weeks old today and has gone on several caches with us! I can't wait till she's old enough to help us find them!

  3. You're putting numbers given in dd mm.mmm format into a program that does not take that format. You can only use decimal degrees or degrees minutes and seconds. Make sure you use one of the punctuation examples given in the dialog box.

    N33°31.903' W081°43.330'

    is N33.53172° W081.72217°

    is N33°31'54.2" W081°43'19.8"

ok how did you get those particular numbers? I went to the site provided above but that translation put me in Tibet, quite a bit a way from me ;P

  4. The difference between 4 and 5 decimal places is very little and nowhere near the distance error you mentioned.  There must be something else going on.  Are you converting the gc.com cache coords correctly?  Your example of -81.1234 (DD.DDDD) would have been 081° 07.404 minutes (DDD MM.MMM).

    Cheers, Olar

    edit for spelling

HA, now I really have myself confused....so *pops in MS S&T*

Carolina bay is only .3 miles from my house with co-ords listed as N 33° 31.903 W 081° 43.330. When I go into S&T it tells me "Type the longitudes and latitudes in deimal values or in degree, minutes and seconds." so I go to the help menu and it further says: "You can express latitude and longitude coordinates in decimal or DMS (degrees, minutes, and seconds) format.

DMS coordinates can be entered in any of the following ways, where D indicates direction (north, south, east, or west):

dd.mm.ssD or dd:mm:ssD or dd mm ssD or dd°mm'ss"D" So I put in (1st example) 33.31.90N & -81.43.30W, which is how it tells me to put it in and I get this error:"Please enter latitude that is at least -90(the South pole) but not greater than 90 (the north pole) and a logitude that is at least -180 (maximum west) but it not greater than 180 (maximum east)"

ok, I actually have no clue whht that menas so I mess with the numbers a little and get this: 33.3190 & 81.4331 which puts me in China?...I live in SC so ok, I'll try again. Made one minor adjustmen put a (-) before the 81. This drops the spot in SC, but that puts that location 27.5 miles away, when it should be .3 miles away....

I hope I explained this well enough for a little more help, cuz I am very lost!

PS the 81.1234 was just numbers Ipulled out of nowhere, the above numbers are from a cache nearby.

  5. In DMS format - there is no "3rd" second. seconds go from 0 to 59. Sixty seconds=1 minute.

I believe you may be confusing the format used on this site DDD MM.MMM - Degrees Minutes - decimal minutes (no seconds).

See Jeeep.com for a conversion tool.

Actual I find that S&T works best with DDD.DDDDD - Degrees and decimal degrees.

your right I was confusing them, but then I tried it like you have it posted and it still doesn't work. a cache that is only 2.8 miles from my house comes up as 28 miles away in a different town. It only works (for me at least) with 6 numbers total. Ex. -81.1234 it wont let the last number go in, I get an error message. I just wanted to be able to see on a larger map where several caches are to try and plan a day of caching. Any other suggestions?

  6. I have microsoft streets and trips 2001, so I put it in today and it says it takes longitude and latitude but it doesn't seem to take it all. Ex it says to use coordinates in decimal or DMS (degrees, minutes, and seconds) format.

(dd.mm.ssD dd:mm:ssD dd mm ssD dd°mm'ss"D) but it wont take the 3rd second? Is it just that this version doesn't take the full DMS or am I doing something wrong?

  7. My husband got one for christmas, completely unrelated to me getting my GPSr. He just likes little lights. Anyway we took off for our first caches christmas night and our 3rd one of the night ended up being a bit after dusk. His light came in very handy!

  8. I haven't been on here long enough to "know" people by their avatars but it deffinately helps. I am a Moderator for a gaming forum called Stratics, for the game UO (Origin shard if anyone plays) and Avatars are very important there, at least for the Role Playing community. I think it just gives you a better sense of a person. Kind of like when you read a book you imagine the characters in your head, I imagine we're all a bunch of characters here...Unfortunately (or fortunately) my current avatar takes all the fun out of the imagination..oh well there's always tomorrow!

  9. *Looks through her new cache bag* Here's a couple items I have picked up around my house to drop into caches...

    SunglassHut eye glass cleaner packs

    A flashing whistle necklace

    Bandaids

A Music CD I burned (Calming music) - I may make some more of these in different variety

An air mattress repair kit (if I find a cache on a campground)

A March of Dimes WalkAmerica badge (I lost twin duaghters to prematurity last year so it's kind of a personal item)

    A MAgnet clip party light

A trial packet of sunblock, off skintastic and some glow in the dark hair gel

    A hand held fan

    Some hair clips

    A Butterfly watch.

Also if my daughter comes with me we bring her new signature item, take a look!

Here's my husband and my daughter at her first cache 122605001.jpg

We're having great fun so far!

PS sorry the pics are so big, I"ll have to figure out how to make them smaller

  10. How do I get started collecting these wonderful coins if I have none of my own? We're still new to this, and probably will be a "newbie" for awhile but we want to start a collection for our daughter who is 9 weeks old. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

  11. That link is great, I saw it last night and it's what gave me the idea. We picked up her first signature item today in a cache that has taken us 3 tries to finish! It's a cute little button.

I never had a collection of anything started for me until I was 20, then came the beanie babies. I just thought this one would be a fun one, maybe it will be more of a family collection. I scrapbook too so I've beent aking pictures all along the way. Oh well I am having fun, we dropped off what we have made for the baby's first signature items today. I can't wait to see how the cacher's like them!

  12. These are all great! The reason I asked is because I was on a hunt and my GPSr kept pointing into a restaurants garden dining area. It was inside a fenced area so I figured if the waypoint was in there then the owner would have had to ask the restaurant for permission. I mean we checked this location several times and it kept saying in the courtyard. So I finally went in to ask, they didn't have a clue. I tried to say thanks and leave but then they wanted to know what it was. This was only my 6th or so hunt and while I know what I am doing, I wasn't quite sure of a short explanation. Instead they said, "So you got up early and went out in the cold to play a game?" It was 10:30, that's not early to me, and it was around 60 out, not very cold. Warm enough in fact to bring my 9 week old. One of them knew what a benchmark was so I just smiled and said "yeah like that."

You've given me some great ways to explain it so I sound like I know what I'm talking about without going way into it! Thanks.

  13. Are the lizards and nickles signatures of cachers? I've seen a couple collections in these forums and that's what gave me the idea. My husband has a collection of beer cans from around the world, and I can tell you they are neat and all but I don't want them in my house, they take up a lot of room! I have a collection of Beanie Babies that I have handed down to the baby, but they are jsut beanie babies. I want her to have something meaningful, even if the first year or two worth she doesn't remember. I also received a really nice camera for Christmas so we take pictures at each cache. I just figured a signature item collection would hold a little more meaning.

She's gone on 4 caches with us so far. 2 we found, the other 2 we haven't yet. Last night I came up with a signature item for when she's with us so I'm gonna get them made today and place the first 2 in the caches she was with us for. Later I"ll come up with a signatuure item for me. Her's will be numbered in the fashion of "Baby's First Cache", "Baby's Second Cache" etc...

    Happy caching!

  14. Thanks for the warm welcome! I think now's a good time to introduce myself (and my team).

I go by the name of Brae (pronounced Bray) and am the Mama of Team UOTrackers. I read an article about geocaching about 2 years ago and was pretty excited about it. Funds were lacking however so it got set aside as we were planning our wedding. So now a couple years have passed and for christmas my husband got me the Garmin etrex! Don't you know I hopped right onto the internet and mapped out 3 caches christmas day! I just love the hunt! My husband, Ancient, now wants his own GPSr so that he can head out to soem of the caches I may not be as interested in. Lastly you'll see in some of our findings, Andromeda. Andromeda is our now 9 week old baby girl! She loves going anywhere Mama and dada can go, so she'll be logging some finds of her own very soon!

We all look forward to becomeing part of this great community, as well as learning from you all!

  15. We just got started caching on Christmas, thanks to my husband. We try to take our daughter with us when weather permits, she is 9 weeks old. It seems most parents start their kids collecting something, so I thought why not signatures since we plan to cach as a family as much as possible? We've brain stormed and will be making her first signature soon, but aren't quite sure where to go from there?

Again any suggestions are greatly appreciated (we're so addicted already)

  16. My husband got me the etrex for christmas after I read an article about geocaching 2 years ago. He was very happy that he finally surprised me with something I wanted! I Love it! I even took off in a pretty powerful thunderstorm tonight to find a location I was unable to find on my first 2 attempts. Needless to say I'm in this for the long haul (We even bring our 9 week old with us, can't wait to start her signature collection!)

So my question is, how do those of you who have done this forever explain to people what it is your doing? I've tried to explain it and some people get it and others just give me this look like I'm not making any sense.

Any suggestiosn would be greatly appreciated!
