  1. How far is "way off". 20-50 feet is quite normal.

The one that was way off was the 2nd waypoint, it was off by 120+ feet and it needs to be close because it will have the next set of co-ords on it. I took my husband out to search for it, and he was all over something it was not on but would make sense for a cacher to look over. I think I'll go out a couple more times before placing the cache anyway, it also helps me get a feel for the traffic. It's a park but so far I've only ever seen one woman there and she's there everyday and inquisitive, heh that should make this fun! Course I told her I was looking for an old rairoad mark. It worked! She thought I was trying to "age" the trees. I took a lot of pictures my first time there of possible hiding spots.

    Thanks for everyone's input!

  2. I've been doing some research and found the place to set my first cache. So far I've been out to the area on a fairly nice day. Very few clouds, but windy. I stood in each spot (multi cache) and with my garmin etrex legend I "marked" the spot. I've been back there once since then and the co-ords on pt 2 seem to be way off. How many times should I go back and mark and trace the steps? Or is there a better way to do this?

    Any info is much appreciated!

  3. I had been trying to guage interest based on the coin design and the intention of selling it for charity. Apparently the only way to do this is to make it trackable and add on more $ to the cost.

What I would love to see is a thread similar to "How to get your own geocoin for dummies" Telling you all the little in's and outs of how to get a coin made, step by step, who to contact, what to ask, what to look for etc. It sure would make this process a lot easier for the beginner, such as myself.

So, now I'm wondering, how do I find out if I can actually sell the coin, WITH tracking, and come out even for costs and make the money for the charity?

  4. I've been getting a lot of great feedback and have since written to another minter. Right now I am only getting ideas on what else to do with the coin. Make it trackable or not. Most of that will come down to price. My main purpose for this coin is to be able to sell it for charity. I'm really wanting to send $5 from each coin to my charity of choice and I'd LOVE to be able to donate $1000. So as far as trading goes, we probably will not be doing many trades.

For right now this thread was to show the design off and get input on it.

Does making the coin Trackable with it's own icon make it more desirable?

  5. As I posted earlier....I'd love to do a trade...but, I'd also be willing to donate to your cause as well. If it takes a donation to be able to trade...I'd certainly be willing to do so. MayBe you can cloak that within "Handling Charges" and avoid all the 3rd degree.

    That's a thought....hmmmm

And thanks to Spaghetti for pointing out some other coin minting options!

  6. Please note that this is not an ordering thread. As the track-ability of this coin has not yet been decided, please refrain from posting your intentions to purchase.

Now, if "Count me in for 2" and posts of this type are meant to be trade offers, please disregard the lump of spaghetti with eyes on your left.

If not, however please keep discussions around either trades or the design of the coin.

    Thank you.

I would very much like to make this coin trackable with it's own icon even. It's still up in the air because the main reason for my making this coin was to be able to donate $5 from each sale to a charity. In September of 2004 I lost identicle twin daughters to prematurity. After the loss I learned of a charity, and have since pledged to help them. If we make the coin trackable the end cost (selling price) would be close to $13 + shipping. This is all based on estimates since I haven't a minter yet. I'd love some feedback on this as it would help me in deciding where to go next with this.

Mods if this is not the right way to word this any suggestions in how to word it better would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  7. The points are a nice touch (where'd ya get the idea?  :D ) - the coin looks great.  I'd trade one of my personal coins for yours.

The outside portion of the coin is "stolen" from the game I play, Ultima Online. In the game that is the compass used...

    uotrackerscoin01.jpg

That was my original attempt at the design. Fox & Hound did a MUCH better job.

About the points: since I don't have a minter yet I think it will come down to their ability to do them. They will NOT be sharp like a ninja star (much to my husbands dismay).

About Preorders - As soon as I figure out how those work I'll be happy to let you know. In the mean time if you like shoot an email to me at UOTrackers@yahoo.com so I'll remember your interest!

  8. I love it, what is the whiskey/easy for?

It's a semi famous street corner here in Aiken SC where we live. Whiskey road was a moonshine running road back in the 1800's, and I *think* that at that corner it was "Easy" to get it. I'm in the midst of doing some research about this area more, I'm not from here originally, my husband is. I just thought it would make a neat coin peice. Here in this town the souvenirs quite often have this street sign depicted.

  9. Tomorrow makes 1 month since we started caching. Wow I'm such an addict already! So I wanted a coin like everyone else and I had some pretty decent ideas, but I can't do design work worth a mctoy :D So I saw Fox and hound was offering to do design work for a coin! WOW!!! Check out his amazing work!

Only 2 minor adjustments. A Place for tracking site (we're still up in the air about tracking) And the co-ords there are not the real co-ords. (The co-ords will have a bonus feature to them, I think my husband is putting a micro in that area

So now I have to move onto phase 2, figuring out metals and minters. So far I know for sure that 10 will be special minted ones that I will be selling for a charity. Also an undecided amount from each coin will be for the same charity as well. I need to chat with some people to figure out how to handle this better I think.

So ok...suggestions, comments, likes dislikes? Fire away!

  10. I found what I think is a signature item over the weekend. It's a tiny wooden ladybug, no bigger than a quarter. It has the year 2005 written on the back, but that's it. It was found in Columbia  South Carolina. If anyone knows who's sig item this is I would love to know. I'll try and get a picture in a bit to post with this.

It may be the sig item of Larry&Lynn. They dropped it off in that cache on Sept 30. They left other ladybugs in a few other caches that they found that same day. And they dropped a bunch of them off in Gratitude Train on Dec 26.

Wow Thanks for the detective work! Why didn't I think to search the logs *smacks her head*. Thanks again!

  12. I bought some Sculpy about a week ago and have been having fun with cookie cutters. So far I've made about 25 Angels, and 6 coins. the Angels I painted pink with glitter on one side and wrote GeoAngel. I had started numbering them but quit after #5 when I found that the glaze made the ink run. I was using a Sharpie fine tip marker. So now I'm at a standstill till I can figure out a better way to "write" on them. It's just plain white clay. Any tips or suggestions?

  13. GeoCoin GiveAway Guidelines

The basic premise is to get coins "into the wild".....

There is an element of risk involved relying on "Blind Faith"....(And no I don't mean Stevie Winwood, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton) :P

In order to qualify for the Special Group Coin purchase, you must complete both parts of the GeoCoin GiveAway...only do 1 part?...no coin...

The 6 coins involved, do not have to be identical...

As far as USA Coins, and trackable vs non-trackable goes...no restrictions apply. The consensus is that for the "cache" coins..."activate" them first before sending. For the "spawner" coins...treat those as you would for any trade...don't activate.

You may enter as many times as you wish...(I have 2 entries right now)...

Part 1. You find someone who is willing to place 3 coins into caches for the finders to either keep, or pass along. Preferably that person already has those coins, so will not be tempted to just keep them. There is no obligation with this part other than to actually place the coins into caches.

NOTE: Accepting the 3 "cache" coins does NOT qualify you in any way...the "sender" is the only one able to claim that as Part #1.

Part 2. You send out the 3 "spawner" coins. Now this part gets tricky because you are trying to find someone who does NOT have those coins. The recipient of the "spawner" is under no obligation to send out any coins...but this is the incentive for them to participate in the project. They can certainly use the "spawner" coin as part of their "cache" or "spawner" obligation in order to qualify for the privelige to purchase the Special Project Coin.

I hope this provides the answers to the many scenarious that have been discussed so far.

See my signature line below for a link to the Yahoo Group...

The only thing I don't see covered is any sort of time restrictions. How long will this expirament run for. How long do you have to qualify for the special participant coin?

  14. I would be happy to accept more coins, but since I am only in the design phase of my coin I don't know how fair that is. Is there a time limit on my pay it forward? I really love this idea, and when I was at my first geoholics meeting tonight I mentioned it to DiskDevil, I think he'll be watching to see where I cache those coins!

PS although we are collecting coins and signature items for my little girl, I'd almost rather place coins in caches for others to find. I have yet to find my first coin, but I bet I"ll be pretty excited when I do. If this is a long running project I have 2 trips planned this year and will be caching on the side of them and wil be happy to drop coins then also.

First trip will be at the end of April from Aiken SC to St. Louis MO. Get ahold of me if you'd like me to drop something on the way there!

  15. Well I've been working on the coin design and these are a rough draft, please let me know what you think. I am hoping the minter can improve on the angels, I did them free hand and I'm not the greatest artist.

  16. So what if you want to play this game but you dont have any geocoins yourself? Can only those who already have coins participate in this? Sorry I'm still a newb.

Might as well send some coins to those who have none yet. Sent email requesting you to release my three into the wild. Also: I don't find any harm in making you a recipent of one of the 3 give-aways. Set 3 free and keep one.

Who wants the other 2? I'm not saying what coins they are - that will spoil the surprise. Besides, I don't care if you already own one or not!

    Having fun already. :D

I'd like one if possible. If I have it, I'll release it, if I do not have it then I will release another in "honour" of the coin.

In fact, I'll make this a standing offer to anyone that would like coins to be released here in Calgary/Rocky Mountains.

okay LFD, email sent - Done Deal.

    One more left... anyone?

I can't wait for my husband to get home to tell him all about this! Bella (AKA Andromeda for caching), got her first wooden nickel today from Mikefromtheburg. We were so excited! We've also received a signature card from fajita &shu! I'm now working on something special in return!

    Thank you for this opportunity!

  17. BINGO ! , I think this is only fair. This would help get more coins into the wild and discourage people participating just to gain coins.

So what if you want to play this game but you dont have any geocoins yourself? Can only those who already have coins participate in this? Sorry I'm still a newb.

  18. I look at it this way, it's kinda like Beanie Babies. In the beginning Ty wanted to create a cute cuddly creature kids could buy with their allowances, around $5-$6.00. If you bought them through Ty authorized dealers that is. But then some mistakes were made and some limited beanies were released. Collectors decided they HAD to have them and paid out the wazzoo for them! I figure it's your money spend it how you like. Keep in mind, in the long run of beanie babies, Ty made an announcment that basically ended collectability and the market fell. Who collects beanie babies anymore? So do what makes you happy at the time, if getting a LE coin makes your day great! Why bother getting upset over something you can't control? Go do another cache its much more fun!

  19. So do ya'll drop the sig item in every cache? Do you also trade swag as well as drop a sig item? I think I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the things you can do, and its hard to choose. Maybe it's new motherhood, I dunno, I kinda want to do everything just to sort of catch up to everyone else. *sighs* Am I crazy?

  20. Well we're still trying to come up with so many things. It seems everyday I visit these boards I want to create more and more items. So I am thinking of having some nickles made for trading and such, making my own special "coin" to leave in caches I think are particularly great, and the geocoin I mentioned once before to benefit an un-named charity. Is this how most people end up doing sig items? How do you differentiate between what you leave? Do you have special items for special caches and different items for trading? What about when you cache with a team, example my husband and sometimes my daughter come with me. So far all we have left signaturewise is a pacifier numbered with baby's 1st (2nd, etc.) cache, cache name, and date on it when she goes with us. Is that corny?

  21. Thank you all so much. I am very encouraged to do this. I really wanted my own GeoCoin, but I think giving the Coin to my Angel Daughters is much better for our first family coin. Someone sent me a link yesterday about a company who will make coins for "free" so I'm going to look into that to get them made. Appatrently they do it all through their site sales and all, does that throw up red flags for anyone?
