  1. Thanks for all the input everyone. I think I'll more or less use the letter as a sort of que card, only I wont be reading from it. I was sort of thinking that if I explained it as a game piece it would be recieved a bit better. I live in SC and right now placing caches isn't the easiest due to a proposed law banning geocaching (we're working on it). Thanks again and wish me luck! I need a new cache hide soon!

  2. Ok so I'm working on a letter for permission to place a cache and am stuck at what else to include. Any suggestions, this is what I have so far...

    Dear Land Manager,

My name is _______________ and I am a Geo-Cacher. I am writing to you in hopes of gaining your permission to place an international game piece within your property limits. The game piece is called a cache and is usually a container with varying sizes from as small as a 35 mm film canister to a large seal tight Tupperware type container. The game is called GeoCaching by most though some also use the terms Terra caching and Geo stashing. Family fun oriented people play it all over the world. The game itself consists of hiding and finding these caches. Once a game piece or cache is hidden the hider then places its longitude and latitude co-ordinates on the Internet at a site set up specifically for this game, www.geocaching.com. Other cachers then set out to find this new piece to the game. There are several rules to this game in order to safe keep the lands the caches are placed on and as a placer I am more than willing to abide by any rules you as a land manager may have as well. Caches generally consist of a logbook for the finders to sign as well as small trinkets and trade items, usually kid type items. A Cacher will sign the log, and then if they choose to, trade items within the cache taking one and leaving something in its place.

As I said I would like to gain your permission to set such a game piece within your property. I would be more than happy to provide you with as much information as I can and can even set this game piece up so that you can watch it’s visitors and notations. Placing this game piece on your property not only continues this game but it will also bring many people to your location that may not have otherwise known it existed, perhaps even coming back to visit another time. Placing game pieces in this area also attracts people to our beautiful city and adds to the economy.

  3. I know you said 2, but I have 3. Fortunately, well you'll see.

  4. Is there anyway of me getting a free geocoin? is there anyone giving them away? i just want one to see where it goes.

So, are you wanting 1 free coin to activate yourself and drop in a cache to see where it goes? OR do you just want a coin to drop into a cache and track it? (ie one that has been activated but you drop it first so to speak?)

  5. Will someone please explain geocoins and wooden coins to me? How do you get them? If you find them, do you get to keep them if you trade for them? What can you trade for them?

    I'm just overall confused.

    Thanks

Geocoins are like travel bugs, someone "owns" them and may or may not put them in caches. If found in a cache they should be moved around from cache to cache, they are not meant to be kept. Some people do buy coins and do trade them but not by putting them in caches but instead through private party discussions. Wooden coins are more like personal cache items; they are left in caches and can be traded out tho as a cahce owner I like to collect them from my caches and keep them.

Of course every now and then you might just find an unactivated coin in a cache, if you are unsure look up who left it and ask them especially if you've checked the trackign code and it comes up not found! And before anyone says that people don't leave unactivated coins in caches, my family left 3 of them while on vacation in St. Louis and plan to leave more when our pocket books can afford to!

  6. My family is visiting St. Louis and decided to activate 3 coins to set out as TB racers. We'd like to set them all in a cache that is somewhat difficult so that they don't disappear right away. Our idea is to have each one, Mama's, Dada's and Baby Bella's race to see which one can make it back to our home cache first! We have a couple of trips coming up so we plan to put a deadline on the race for example they need to be back by October 1st for this race. Then we head to NY and they would need to be back by May for the next trip. Anyway, I'm babling, I'd like to set them off this week here and am looking for suggestions on a good cache, or even an event or cacher hosting an event? We don't have time for the CITO's in the area unfortunately but with such a large area I'm sure other events will be going on soon! I think I read the 29th, the day we leave ;(.

Thanks in advance. Oh we also have a couple coins we'd like to trade for a local cachers coin. We've got the CITO, Found it, Fox and hound, Robin Hood and Wyken Witch coins for trade. Thanks again!

  7. Our family will be in St. Louis through this friday and are looking for local cachers' personal metal coins to trade for one of the coins we have.

    We've got:

    CITO

    Found it

    Fox and Hound

    Robin Hood

    Wyken Witch

We're staying in Fenton but caching all over. Please Email us at UOTrackers@yahoo.com Thank you

  8. All orders that have been paid for have been dropped off at the post office and are on your way.. Let me know when they arrive.

    Thanks

And there are still more pins and coins available

We received ours Thursday morning, just in time for our little event. Thanks for the extra gifts, everyone loved them!

  9. If you've placed a cache, any kind of cache give me some advice on who you get permission from. I see caches all over and wonder who the heck I'd ask to place in some areas, like along side a road, guardrails at walmarts, behind restaurants, on vacant lots. Please give me an idea of the type of area you placed them and how or who you asked for permission.

    Thanks!

  10. I've got a coin that is selling on www.geocoinstore.com It's called Team S&B Geocoin. I need help selling it. If you look at it you see that I'm giving 10% to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. My wife has it and is going thru reconstruction now. I feel that this is a worthy cause and would like all your help in selling these.

I am sorry to hear your wife had to go through this. My husband has had cacner 3 times since he was 5 years old. We are told he is cured now, but it deffinately took it's toll on him. He is going on his 4th hip replacement soon. I think selling coins for a charity is great, it was my idea too for my choice in charity. Here's what I'd like to know: Is the reason the donation amount is 10% due to the rest of the profits going to help your wife? I think that bit of info might help in the sale. When I was planning my charity coin I had planned for $5 from one type of metal and $10 from another type to go to the charity. 10% seems low and anyone who has minted a coin knows where the profits are. If the profit is going to help your wife it could help the sales if people know that.

Just my 2 cents. It is a good cause and I hope it works out for you.

  11. What is the gc number of your event? I maybe willing to donate one of my GeoCoin Traq Pro software programs for the event.

    Thanks....Anthus

Looks like this is it :GCT6GG

I just held my first get together last night it was a great success. I was given some pins for it by a nice cacher with a new coin! I hope your event goes over well. If by some chance I have anything I can send you I'll write you closer to the event. Good Luck.

Oh! I won some coins for designing the April coin for a club, if I get them in time I can send you 1, I think I only get 5 but it would be a LE one. I just don't know when they get shipped.

  12.

I also think "baby loggerhead" is their daughter. Someone told me that. Not sure if it's true.

If you look through their galleries there are pictures with "baby loggerhead". It does appear to be their daughter.

  13. Unfortunately (at least in my area) even if the cache has the icon for a coin, it doesn't always mean it is there. I've been to several caches to see a coin I had never seen, it's in the logs as there and on the site, but alas no coin. I wouldn't travel too far just to find the coin. Maybe if you do, plan a bunch of caches in the area, even if they dont have coins. Good luck, and to your original question, I have no idea if there is a way to look up coin only caches, sorry.

  14. We'll be driving up to St. Louis (from Aiken SC)on April 21st, planning several caches along the way. We'll be there till the 28th. We don't have many coins to trade but love to meet other cachers! Our coins is still in the works.

SLAGA (St.Louis Area Geocachers Assn.) is having a CITO event on the 22nd and a multi-CITO on the 23rd if you'd be interested in that. We always welcome visitors. And ALWAYS have a hearty supply of food somewhere near. :D I'm planning on the 22nd but not sure about the 23rd.

    Here's the event waypoints.

Thanks, I had been looking up events and caches in the area, since we are traveling with an almost 6 month old it will depend highly on how stressed we are when we get there. <_< I know we have the zoo and botanical gardens planned. Any caches at either of those? We'll also head into old st charles for a day, I love that little town!
