  1. I vote for writing the article. As an insider your perspective would be a little different than that of a reporter. As for your concern about plundering, mean people will do mean things with or without your help. If your article causes someone to expend the time and effort to go out and empty a cache, it's not your fault. I helped with a newspaper article a couple of years ago about caching and as far as I know there wasn't a rash of plundering after it was published.
  2. I've never been bothered by a short post, and I've never taken it as an insult to my cache either. Some people are just better at painting a colorful picture about their experiences with words than others. Is there really much difference between a simple TNLN and an obviously copied and pasted post such as - Number X of 10 for my friend and I today. Great day for caching, thanks for the hide. -? I'm guilty of the copy and multiple paste method but I still try to add a comment that's unique to the cache. If I'm understanding what is meant by DPM that seems like more of a jab than a TNLNSL.
  3. Can we at least get a difficulty and terrain rating for this cache? Seriously though, it seems that a lot of people have lost sight of what this hobby is all about (yes, I know I can only speak for myself). For me it's a tool to get outdoors and to venture to places that I would have never had a reason to visit if it weren't for someone placing a cache there. My GPS or GPSr or whatever you want to call it has lead me to some very interesting and scenic locations. It's very comical to read some of these threads and see what kinds of trivial things people will get all worked up over.
  4. I removed one a couple of years ago. The cache was a glass jar hanging from the branch of a tree at about eye level. When I found it the jar was broken in half with the sharp, jagged top half still hanging at eye level. Some of the broken pieces were laying at the base of the tree, placed there by the previous visitor. I looked around and found most of the broken glass and retrieved what contents I could find and immediately emailed the owner to let him know what had happened to his cache. I just didn't feel that it would have been a good idea to leave the broken glass in the area and hope someone didn't get cut up before the owner could fix it.
  5. At the risk of offending her if she happens to read this, I think the photo looks like it's been digitally manipulated in some way. Take away the hair and her face looks very symmetrical, almost like it’s a photo of half a face that’s been copied and flipped and then rejoined. I don’t know,, something about the image just doesn't look real to me. I think I remember some years back on the Discovery Channel or TLC or one of those type of shows where they constructed a model of a face using what was thought to be the most attractive proportions and features of a female face. This image reminded me of that episode. My apologies to Miss X if any offence was taken, none was intended
  6. This is only slightly off topic and I’m not picking on anyone, just looking for the right word. I don’t think TNLN or GPS or TTFN are true acronyms, are they? I thought acronyms were words formed by the first letters of a group of words, such as RADAR, or SCUBA. I know there has to be a name for that type of abbreviation but I can’t think of it, does anyone here know what it is??
  7. Of the three bugs that I own, This one has been the most rewarding. I wanted it to travel around Australia and hopefuly get some nice pictures posted of its travels. I wasn't the least bit interested in it moving around in the U.S. so I sent it (via USPS) to a fellow cacher in Australia to release it for me. Check it out, there are some really great photos of Australia.
  8. That's true, he didn't say that he invented the internet. His exact words in the interview with Wolf Blitzer were "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet". He was a supporter of technology that helped the internet evolve to what it is today, but to say that he created it is kind of a stretch. The internet was already being used by the time he was elected to congress.
  9. I thought Al Gore invented the GPS. Oh wait, he invented the internet, sorry.

    FTF????

I don’t think you would be embarrassing yourself by claiming FTF for a travel bug. Just because it isn’t common to do so doesn’t mean you can’t do it. I hadn’t even thought about mentioning FTF for a bug until you posted the question. Doesn’t sound like too bad an idea, in fact I think I’ll start doing it too.
  11. I've always logged the find and then emailed the owner. If the email doesn't satisfy them then they can just delete my post (that hasn't happened yet). As for my virtual cache, most of the times the person will log the find before I reply to their email confirmation.
  12. quote:Originally posted by Prime Suspect:Of course, there were five DNF logs of people who did find the first stage only, so the "I was only doing what the others were doing" bit doesn't really hold up. I halfway disagree with that. Chiefpig has only been at this since last Friday. True, five people did log DNFs, BUT, five others logged 'Found It' for only the first stage. By reading the logs for this cache I can see where someone new to the sport would get the impression that you log each stage. I think the cache owner is being somewhat irresponsible for allowing the partial finds in the first place.
  13. From BrianSnat quote:True, but I don't think the owner should have allowed the partial finds. It only confuses things and what, do they get to log a 'found it' for each stage? This is a strange one. I've never seen anyone post a find for finding only the first stage of a multi, and on this one I think four or five people did, and one of them DID log a find for each stage. Oh well,, to each his own I guess.
  14. Chiefpig wrote: quote: Well, saying the second part was across the river only saves the next player the unnecessary 500m walk back and forth (1km total) to the river bank. But it's their cache and I guess they can do whatever they want. Coinoath tells you in the description "Please plan for a good hike and extra time." They probably did feel that posting the location of the second part was a spoiler. No big deal, just get to the other half when you can and log the find. Just a little misunderstanding it looks like, that's all.
  15. I can see where you might have thought it was o.k. to log a find with only half the hunt completed. MOJOMAMA shouldn't have logged it as a find either. I sure wouldn't let a little thing like this upset you though. Post a note for the first part and log the find when you get to the other side of the river. And maybe leave the spoiler out of your posts (the part about the other half being on the other side of the river).
  16. Maybe logging it the other way around would have been better. Post a note for the first part then log it as a find when you complete it.
  17. This is a virtual cache that I set up at Logan County Airport (AAA) in Lincoln Illinois. I like the idea of aerocaches but there's no way to search for aerocaches only that I know of. I doubt if there's enough of us flying geocachers to justify having another category of cache.
  18. You know what? It seems like I have better luck by selecting the nearest town from the Heavensabove database rather than entering the exact location of my home, sometimes it will give me more predicted passes. Has anyone else noticed this?
  19. Alt + 0186 I believe,,, º,,, yep that’s it. Actually that’s for Microsoft Works, I would think it’s the same for Word though. If not I’m sure someone will chime in shortly.
  20. Congrats WildcatRegi. I was just as thrilled as it sounds like you were when I saw my first one, now try to spot one in the daytime. Just curious, how long would you estimate that it lasted?
  21. Posted by SamLowrey quote: It better be bright because I have never tried this before. So, binoculars will be a hindrence, I take it? You can just look in the sky in the general direction and see a flicker - is that about the jist of it? Don’t even try to use binoculars, you’ll miss it. Get to an area with dark skies in the direction of the flare. Avoid looking at any white light for several minutes before the flare so your eyes become acclimated to the dark. Use the clock on your GPSr to know when the flare should appear and start looking around 30 seconds before the predicted time. You’ll see a very dim, star looking light slowly get brighter ,and then it will *flare* very brightly, and then fade out. The whole thing will last for not much longer than 5 seconds or so. It will appear to be moving across the sky at about the same speed as an airliner. Good luck
  22. quote:Originaly posted by snoogans:Interesting. Could you give more info or a link? Is it anything like the rare green flashes that happen when the sun is on the horizon? The green flash that you’re referring to is caused by sunlight from the setting sun being refracted by the atmosphere. Blue and green are refracted higher than red and yellow so as the last of the sun slips below the horizon you may see a bluish green flash. Conditions have to be just right to see the green flash, and they are very rare. Sun Dogs are caused by sunlight or moonlight refracting off of ice crystals in the atmosphere. They appear to the left and right of the sun or a bright full moon.

  24. Wouldn't it be more of a pull? quote: Just testing
  25. I’ve found that it helps to have an extra set of eyes or two scanning the sky with me while trying to see a flare. If you aren’t looking in exactly the right spot all you will see is a flash of light in your peripheral field of vision and by the time you turn to look, it’s already gone. In very dark skies you can see more of the fading in and fading out portion of the flare. The daytime flares last for only about a second. My guess is that you won’t be able to stop with seeing just one, although short lived they’re a spectacular sight, especially the mag. -7, 8, and 9s.
