Great! So do I have to buy a trackable item from the website? Can I use my own item (like a keychain from the base we're stationed at)? If I can use my own item how do I go about getting a tracking code for it? I appreciate all of the replies - this is new to us and we're excited to learn more about everything geocaching has to offer!

My family and I are pretty new to Geocaching (we got our first GPS for Christmas and have only been out to find a dozen caches since)... I'm trying to read all of the threads regarding travel bugs but I'm still very lost. We'd like to try and get a travel bug to friends in Montana from here in DC. Do we have to place a cache to put a bug in or can we just toss it in one of the caches we find along our travels?

I built my husband a geocaching kit for Christmas complete with a brand new Garmin Oregon 450 GPS... but since Saturday whenever I try to upgrade to a premium membership it gives me a screen with this message: "An Error Has Occurred Either your session has timed out or an error has occurred. If you were in the process of purchasing a new premium membership, a basic membership has probably already been created for you. Please log in using the username and password you supplied for your account. Once you have logged in, you may upgrade your account. Otherwise, please click here to start the checkout process again." No matter how many times I try to do it, I get this screen. I've tried paying by credit card and paypal. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Well.. I just bought the Garmin Oregon 450 from Cabela's black friday sale.... bring on Christmas! Now to go get the rest of the stuff for our "kit"

Good idea! I haven't actually been on any quests... what kinds of "swag" are good to leave behind? My mom is buying him a few creative containers so that when he's ready he can hide his own fun caches, I'll tell her to add in a travel bug, too

I'm working on surprising my husband with a Geocaching "starter kit" for Christmas. I had minimal interest in Geocaching but some friends have me interested. My husband on the other hand has been talking about getting started for a few years and knowing him, once he has his GPS we're going to be out exporing the great outdoors with our 6 year old allllllllll the time I've talked to friends, read pages of the forums here and googled my fingers sore trying to figure out what I'm looking for as far as a GPS. In a few other threads I read that Cabela's will have the Garmin Oregon 450 on sale for $249 on Black Friday. Does anyone know if this is in-store only or if I might be able to order it online for the same price? I know we'll be using it a lot so I don't want to start with a super cheap unit that he'll want to upgrade immediately. I'd rather go for something a little better in the $250-$300 range that will last a while. I've had issues with used electronics in the past so I'm not comfortable buying a previously owned unit. I bought a comfy backpack and will put in a few pencils, bottles of water, trail mix/granola bars, flashlight & extra batteries, sunscreen, gloves (plastic and gardening), a hand towel, bug spray. Christmas eve I'll upgrade from free to paid premium membership here on the site. ... what else am I missing? I'm getting excited for this, can't wait to join you all!
