  1. What if you go caching with a group? I went Saturday with Camo Dude and Cherokee One. We found 4 caches. Do we all log the cache as found or just the person with the GPSr. Camo Dude is a single person, Cherokee One is a team and I belong to Team Narrow Escape. Who is supposed to log the find in this case. We all signed the log? Steve
  2. WR8Y, Well if you go buy the accessories separate you'd have alot more in it than if you bought the package, PLUS edition. Once you have the software and all accessories go get some 1GB SD cards and load the whole software bundle. You'll never be " tied to a computer" again. LOL. I see just the software for 100$ on ebay let alone the reader and the card. Mine came with a 64 MB card, which will get you started, but I am going after the GB ones and be done with the software.....Unless you want to change something! The base maps are not near as detailed as the Mapcreate 6.3 ones. I would get the software if it were me doin it again. Color is the ONLY way to go!!
  3. WR8Y, Did you see this thread: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=126394 Steve
  4. WR8Y, My Lowrance H2Oc antenna works so well I haven't needed an external antenna. A friend has the Magellan software and a Meridian Gold and the Lowrance software and hardware blows it away as well. The Lowrance models you speak of ALL have the topo maps. My Mapcreate 6.3 is geared for the outdoorsman and is topo based but, you can tell the unit ,in one of the menus not to draw topo data, its your choice. The only thing the Lowrance wouldn't have is the barometric altimeter, I have found these to be terribly inaccurate and not much use. When the unit gets a 3D lock it show you your altitude anyway. The only thing I don't like about the Lowrance is the battery cover latch. BTW we are the same age, I was 14 in 1974 also! Didn't get my ham ticket till 1986! Steve........N3GOV
  5. WR8Y, Are you a Ham? My call is N3GOV! Steve
  6. WR8Y, I absolutely love my Lowrance, and the topo and roads seem to be right on the money! http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=126536 Check this out! Lowrance is known for maintaining lock under tree canopy cover! You won't go wrong with Lowrance! Steve Steve
  7. jayheel, Here is a good price on the Expedition C. http://www.shipdog.com/product.asp?i=LOWIFEXPC What do you think? They also have other models. Handhelds are under automotive GPS's. Steve
  8. jayheel, Yes you do have to use the LEI reader and remove the SD card, but, I don't find this to be any more or less inconvienent than hooking up the GPS to the computer. Downloading waypoints and converting them to .usr files is a little bit of a pain in the a**, but GSAK handles this job nicely. It took me about 30 mins. to convert every cache waypoint within a 20 mile radius of my home, 81 to be exact. Once thats done you never have to do the conversion again unless you need some new ones. The GPS does everything else so nicely I find removing the card to be a minor drawback! I got mine from a fish finder seller on the web. I got the H2Oc plus for 298$ which I thought was a deal. You can see they've raised their prices! http://www.fish-finders-gear.com/ffg051261.html Steve
  9. jayheel, If you do a search for Lowrance, you'll find just about everyone who has a Lowrance handheld really likes them. I have 2, an H20c and an iWay 100. They are great receivers. Superfast lockup, stays locked up, Great resolution on the screens, great accuracy. 9 times out of 10 on caches, when I am standing on the coordinates the cache is under my feet...no kidding!! You won't be sorry getting a Lowrance! I'm not! Feels like quality in the hand! The software is very simple, the GPS takes a little use time to get used to the features. Some would say complicated, I would say feature rich. This makes it a little longer on the learning curve. I've used the others, I'm not going back! A wolf in sheeps clothing! Great GPS! Steve
  10. Sorry! Just thought I would offer what I thought it was worth given its limitations. Didn't mean to offend you! Can't understand buying this when GO2 with 64megs for 83$. Wanted to buy it for someone less fortunate than I.
