  1. I don't have a Garmin, so I can't help you with software suggestions, but if worse came to worse and there were no native OS X applications, the MBpro (being amazing) can run Windows using either Bootcamp or Parallels (I'm sure you're well aware of this, it's more for others who might read this thread down the road).. So you "could" use Windows software on the Mac, as a last resort. I hope someone will post a native OS X solution, I'd be curious to know of any.
  2. Ok, I tried out my 'new & improved' Explorist 210 with EU firmware today. I went out on my balcony, and turned on the GPS. After about a minute it synced and was displaying my correct location. It took longer to do this first sync because I reset the whole GPS when I updated the firmware, so it defaults my location to just off the West coast of Africa. After the initial sync, I shur the GPS off, moved then turned it back on. It re synced with 5 satellites in less then 10seconds! By no more then 20 to 30 seconds, I had captured 8 satellites and had TWO WAAS signals That's as all time record for my unit. Usually it takes a minute or two to get a basic 4 satellite signal, and if I'm REALLY lucky, on a crystal clear day I "might" have gotten one WAAS... now I have two at amazing strength! So far so good! I played with the new screens the firmware upgrade gives you. It would be nice to have documentation for the new features, but some trial and error figured them out. I decided to test the unit by going for a short run and record the track log for later display on my PC (using Topo3D Canada). I ran 10KM (6.2miles for our neighbors to the South) and saved the track log. After loading it into my computer, the log is EXACTLY on top of the roads and trails I ran on. No deviations or 'interpolated' legs. Another thing I'm finding much better is the delays between screen changes. As in... there are none. With the old firmware, if I was still aquiring a signal and navigated to the moving map screen, it would sit there for awhile no matter what buttons I pushed. Now, even with no signal (indoors), I can cycle through any screen with no delays. My conclusion... Everyone with an Explorist 210 should upgrade their firmware I have found no problems so far using the European firmware on my North American 210. Yes, you will default to KM, so Americans will need to switch over to Miles if desired. I hope this helps people who are still thinking of weather to switch or not!
  3. Hi guys, I just wanted to add my experience for the record. I'm in Eastern Ontario Canada and just flashed my Explorist 210 NA with the European 3.2.53 firmware. I just followed the instructions on the firmware download page... wiped the 210 first, ran the program, it found my GPS and completed 100% then restarted the GPS automatically. Upon reboot, I have all sorts of new fancy screens. Everything seems to have worked perfectly (I can breath again). It's after midnight here, so I'll have to play with it tomorrow and see how the accuracy/functions are working. I'll post again with my 'field tests'. The system I used to flash: XP pro with SP2 in case that makes any difference in some people having to reboot manually or not.
  4. Hi everyone, Has there been any updates since the last reply (July 2006)? I would like to encourage people to discover the Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park (a non-operating park that use to be crowned land, and is now being made into a provincial park) North of Peterborough through Geocaching, but I want the legal aspects and park support to be in place first. I've been camping in the park ever since the mid 1980's (long before it even was a park). It's all back country, no facilities or fees. You need a canoe to get to most of the designated campsites (the way camping should be) Absolutely beautiful area I know others would love to explore. I do understand why Ontario Parks is hesitant about allowing certain activities in the parks. I hate packing in, only to discover a ton of garbage left at a remote campsite by some ignorant weekend warriors. The parks also want to have enough people to patrol and police all activities over a huge land area, which with their budgets, isn't possible yet. I've found reference on the Ontario parks website to Geocaching in the Kawartha Highlands. Here's the PDF document: http://www.ontarioparks.com/ENGLISH/planni..._manage_opt.pdf It states: "Geocaching may be allowed by interim procedure under strict conditions – no off trail access" which seems fair to me. Always protect the natural environment first, and place the fun activity second. But from reading this forum post, I'm getting a completely different message that the cache would not be supported. Is this another case of one government agency not knowing that the other is doing? Cheers for any info. Hope that document helps!
  5. My first GPS, given to me by my girlfriend for my birthday (yes, she's amazing!) eXplorist 210 Purchased Topo3D Canada to go with it. So far so good, I really like the interface, and it is working like a charm. Found my first 5 caches last weekend
  6. Hello everyone, first post on the forum. I just started Geocaching yesterday (June 3rd 206). I was given a Magellan eXplorist 210 by my girlfriend for my birthday (yes, she is amazing!) and have been having a blast hunting caches (I'm up to 5 finds) I was wondering about the accuracy of my unit, as the screen reads between 5m and 8m accuracy most of the time (unless I'm able to get WAAS, then it goes down to 3m, but waas seems to be limited coverage in my areas (Central / Eastern Ontario Canada). I've been finding the caches ok, but most of the time coordinates are off by .001 or .002 (eg, a cache listed at: 44 15.355N might end up being displayed at: 44 15.354N on my GPS) I was wondering if my unit was misconfigured in some way, but after reading your comments here, I'm guessing that my accuracy is actually pretty good, and that little bit of discrepancy is just from the placers GPS vs. my GPS / weather conditions when the cache was placed / when I search for it, etc... and ads to the fun of the search. Thanks for the reassurances!
