  1. If you are looking for a smooth ride, go with independent suspension front and rear (like my 4x4 2004 Expedition). Expedition is an awesome smooth ride, but it's definately not an off roader though. If you are really looking for something capable off road, then you definately want something with straight axles both front and rear (like my 99 Cherokee). The Libertly is the lowliest Jeep ever made until the new Compass was made this year (back to the smooth ride versus off road ability). Cherokee guys hate the Liberty because it replaced the Cherokee with a "street jeep" of sorts. Not to say the Liberty is terrible, but it's far from a Cherokee or any other Jeep with straight axles front and rear. Independent suspension has it's place though.....on the streets or at high speeds in the desert, and even in the snow, but it is out of it's place on uneven terrain (articulation) at slow speeds. Any straight axle 4x4 ought to be able to out perform the Liberty off road unless someone has done the straight axle conversion to the Liberty and then I hear it is one heck of a truck! I don't know what you drive now, but one thing that may save you a whole lot of money and let you keep what you have, but make it more capable is a locking differential. I have a "No-Slip" locker in my Cherokee and it was not hard to install! You can go to www.powertrax.com and see what they offer for what you drive (if anything), but it makes a huge difference, sometimes more than others, but it's a big improvement! Unimogs come with lockers front and rear and so do the new Rubicon Wranglers. Anyway, a locker in a 2wd vehicles will make it go much better, sometimes better than a stock 4x4, and sometimes a little less, but you will be impressed. Just something to consider from someone who can tell you firsthand on these aspects. Good luck...NE4ME
  2. I have a mildly modified 99 Cherokee..Rear locker, stock suspension, 30x950 at's and it does great, but would love to have an old Unimog for the serious stuff. Talking about an awesome trail ride for stock, then my next pick would be a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon...Good luck...NE4ME
  3. Well, I enjoy geocaching as well as 4x4ing. Just wondering if there is any way to find out which caches require 4x4 to get near them in a vehicle without having to go through each individual cache trying to find one. Obviously some vehicles are more capable than others etc, but has anyone made a comprehensive list so us that enjoy 4x4 can have some 4x4 fun on the way to the cache? If anyone knows of such list or a means of filtering out easy roads, please let me know. I see where there is a terrain listed on each cache, but that usually means a rough hike, compared to a rough road/trail. Might be a good opportunity to put one more rating on each cache concerning road conditions to the cache. Thanks guys...NE4ME

  5. Weighing the options between each model and having a hard time deciding. Just an FYI, I am currently running the old GPS12, and it's ok, but getting ready to upgrade to something reasonably priced (aka no color). I think I would like to have something with the build in altimeter and digital compass, but not sure if it's worth it or not or if anyone uses this function at all, but it sounds nice atleast, hehe. Also wondering which of these units have the Sirf receivers of any at this level. Also, the patch antenna versus the quad helix antenna issue and if one is obviously better than the other. I hear some praising the quad helix design and also the Sirf receivers too. I also want some type of built in map. Yes, I am asking a lot for my price range ($250 or less). I noticed that the Map60 has a geocaching mode, which intrigued me. Also, my gps12, has a resolution on it's map to .2 mi or .3 ki, and then on distance it goes down to .01 of a ki or mi, but is there something on the newer units that go even closer (better resolution) than that for geocaching or do you just have to look at the coordinates every time and try to match them? Right now I am leaning towards the map76S, but still not sure. May just go cheaper with the Vista....Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.....NE4ME
