I am looking for a handheld GPS for geocaching and navigation in a boat and could use some advice.
The primary use for the GPS will be geocaching. A secondary use for the GPS will be navigation in a ski boat on two large lakes in Arkansas. The main use for the boat navigation will be to mark waypoints to return to later. I would like to be able to load topo maps to the GPS so I can see shoreline, islands, etc on the lakes.
I want to upload cache waypoints to the GPS with GSAK pc based geocaching software. When geocaching, I plan to use my Garmin Streetpilot III to route to the location as close as I can drive a touring motorcycle, then use the handheld GPS to navigate to the cache site. I will load the cache information to my iPaq PDA and update the field logs with the PDA.
I have successfully loaded cache waypoints to the Streetpilot using GSAK, and have had success finding caches with it, but using the Streetpilot away from the vehicle is not a real good option as it is too bulky to use as a handheld for very long.
I have been looking at the Magellan explorist 500 and 600 and the Garmin GPSMap 60CSX. Are there other units that work with GSAK I should consider also?
Since I currently own Garmin (and have City Navigator ver 4.01, 5, and 7 installed on my computer) would it be best to stay with Garmin and install the Garmin topo maps to Mapsource also?
