  1. A little off topic, but a forum search is generally useless. I really enjoy this forum, but the search feature has seldom worked for me, and it sounds like it doesn't work very well for many others.
  2. Project-gc includes the centroid in your info: http://project-gc.com/ProfileStats/uxorious Yours is alleged to be N47 13.337 W122 11.150 I don't get the exact math involved (after trying and failing to reverse-engineer the GSAK macros), but the centroid is an averaging of the latitudes and longitudes of all your finds. Thank you. Very interesting, now to look the spot up on a map.
  3. So, what is a Cache Centroid, and how do I find it? I assume it is the center of all the caches I've found? If so is there place that tells me this? Seems like everyone but me knows. Or no one else who does not know, cares.
  4. The idea of a multi, or puzzle cache that will require identifying different types of trees is a good plan. Having a whole new type of cache based on just identifying trees, maybe not so good. I have actually thought about a nice multi on a trail through a park, where you can learn to identify some of the local tree types. But I don't think we need a whole new cache type for them.
  5. The cache I was placing the dot was right on the very edge of the circle, measured 1/10 on Google Earth. That being the case how can some circles overlap by a third or more? The circles are 1056 Ft Dia. That makes the 528 Ft. Radius. From the dot representing the cache to the outside line of the circle is 528 Ft. If the two caches are exactly on the edge of each others circle, they would be 528 Ft. apart. Don't think of it as a circle, but as a distance between the two. |<----- 528" ----->| The reason for showing the circle is to show all the nearby caches, But for any two you are just concerned about the straight line.
  6. I don't see anyone harassing you. I do see people giving a opinion on your question. I agree there should be a "your way"(never change D/T rates) and "my way" (update D/T rates to reflect changes). Your cache, do it your way. On my caches I will change the D/T as needed.
  7. I found a cache that was back off the trail 75 ft or more, and had been signed by a muggle. His note said he was answering natures call and notice this ammo can in a stump. Glad he signed it and put it back.
  8. I think it can be a real problem when people do not read the cache page. I had a cache at a local fish hatchery, they had some problems with dirtbags stealing metal, and had to gate and close at night. When I talked with the manager about it, he was very concerned with people coming at night. (no problem with the cache in the daytime, they welcome visitors ) Because so few read the cache page anymore it was decided the best thing to do was archive. Too bad as this cache had a lot of positive logs and people seem to enjoy it. I've seen a lot of cache pages that had important info on them. People don't read the cache page and that puts these caches at risk. If I was a land manager, and had some restrictions for a spot someone wanted to put a cache, no way I would allow it if you can't expect most seekers to read them.
  9. My style of caching and my health precludes me from trying for a streak. I don't want to feel I must go for a cache, when I don't feel like going for a cache. For someone else it may be a good idea, like going to the gym when you don't feel like going to the gym. All a matter of choice. That being said I can understand why people like the idea of trying for a long streak. If I were to try this, it would be when I found the cache. It wouldn't matter what day I logged it, if I found a cache on Thursday, and another on Friday, that would be a two day streak. If I found two caches on Thursday, I wouldn't feel right logging one on Thursday, and coming back on Friday to log the other. If the cache requires I send something in to qualify, The cache find is still the day I found it, not the day I logged it. Edited to say, if I went out before midnight, found a cache, then continued to find another just after midnight, that would be one day to me. Not two separate days. If the idea is to make sure I get out of the house on a regular basis it doesn't make sense that one trip counts as two.
  10. Costco has a pair of Duracell Durabeam Ultra 500-lumen LED flashlights for $24.99. It comes with 6 Duracell C alkaline batteries. It also has a zoom that will focus a spot beam, they claim 785 feet. I don't know about that but it does light up a long way on spot. Seems to be very well made and solid. My favorite flashlights I've had so far.
  11. I bought one of those for spotting salmon in the creek behind the house, and checking the crawl space under the house. Worked well for a year, but if you don't keep the batteries charge when not using it they don't last. Also, while it was fun to play with that much light, it really is more light than I ever needed.
  12. Geocaching and Letterboxing are similar, but two different things. People still letterbox, and some Geocaches are letterbox hybrids, combining the two, but they are separate games.
  13. Headlamp vs regular flashlight would be a matter of choice. The headlamps are a lot more convenient and easier to use on a trail, but a hand held light can be bigger and brighter. I have both. I live away from the city, and use one or the other when wandering about my property at night. I love the LEDs, and the newer ones are much brighter than they used to be. If you have a headlamp the fire tacks should be easier to see. If you are having trouble seeing the tack using a regular flashlight, try putting the flashlight against your nose. (or forehead.)Getting the beam close to the level of your eyes should help the tacks pop out. Same theory a forest ranger taught me as a kid, for seeing animals eyes in a dark woods at night.
  14. You can just print them out on your printer. (assuming you have a printer.) However, you really need to laminate them, or they quickly turn into wet mush in a lot of caches. Also, if you leave a card, you still need to sign the log. Leaving a card with your name and whatever is really just a signature item, and those are collected by some people. They are not a substitute for signing the log.
  15. DO NOT TAKE THE CACHE, to return later when no others are about. I have a couple DNFs I feel may have been just that. Can't find it, come back days later only to find it right where I looked before. How rude. If you know they are cachers, you can ask them if they want to walk away while you put it back. If you do not want to put it back while they are there, tell them, but don't wander off with the cache to leave them searching 15 min.s or more for something you have. Edited to say if you must take the cache to insure it's safety, please mention in your online log you did so. And that you replaced it, so others will know it isn't gone and they can try again right away.
  16. "PLEASE refrain from placing caches within the artwork."??????? I think the idea of GeoArt is silly, but like every other part of this game, there's a little something for everyone. However, in this case taking up an area 60X60 miles, then not wanting anyone else to hide a cache in that area, sounds a little selfish. While I wouldn't hide a cache in the area just to spite, if I lived around there and found a spot I thought needed a cache, I wouldn't hesitate to set one. <_<
  17. So don't be surprised if the CO takes care of it. I've seen a number of hides by owners who either rarely cache anymore, or don't log the caches they do find, but still take care of their hides. Give them a chance.
  18. I haven't a clue who puts in what bid, or why no one out west is putting in an acceptable bid. I guess we can't complain, but we sure as heck can be disappointed. So while everyone in the east is going TA-DA, and "drum roll please". I repeat--- BOO-HISS-BOO!!. :(
  19. Boo, hiss, boo! The last four have been central or east coast. It's time we got another one somewhere west of the great divide.
  20. Looks like the web site you linked to sells them. You apparently need to send an enquiry first.
  21. If I find an archived cache, and the CO failed to pick up the container and log, I would sign it and log it. That's a little different than an archived virtual that is no longer there. If I knew it was archived, I probably wouldn't be looking for it. However, if for some reason I knew it was archived but the container left out in the wilds, I would be inclined to remove the container.
  22. My cellphone will take pictures, but we've never figured out how to get them out of the phone and onto another format. Several people have tried, but it don't work. My brother is always uploading his pic.s and my niece does too, but neither of them can get mine to upload. One of these days I guess I will have to go to the local Verizon store and ask.
  23. On the left is Luna,(Anatolian shepherd mix) on the right is Zeus (Belgian Malinous)
  24. I figured out what my problem was. I was copying the link from the thumbnail picture. After I clicked on the thumbnail and copied the info from the bigger picture it worked. I knew it was something simple, just hope I remember next time.
  25. Hi uxorious, did you load them up with the new attachment system? Normally you use the "insert image" button and paste the link to the picture. How big are the original files? Have you loaded up pictures before? Did it work in the past? lumbricus When they came out so small, I did go back and try the new attachment system. That didn't make a difference. I loaded the pictures into an archived cache of mine. I then used the "insert image" button to paste them here. In my picture files the size shows as 2272 X 1704, but on the cache page it shows as 100 X 75. I note that the program says it will resize the picture, but it seems it makes it too small. A few years ago I was trying to post into another thread and had the same problem. If I remember right the solution was easy, but I don't remember now what I was doing wrong then. It does seem to me I have loaded pictures into the forum since then without a problem, but not sure.
