  1. You can't always tell by the rating given on the cache page. There are two caches around here that are on the top of volcanoes, that are rated 1/5. and 1.5/5. For those of us with limited mobility, getting older, or taking young children with you, you need to read the cache page, and hope it helps. I really wish there was a way the people who find the cache could rate the difficulty also, might make it more uniform.
  2. I just bought two of them for $6 each, at the local gun store. They had a bunch of them.
  3. humm...... I thought I had said you wouldn't be able to put your name on it,(it would be in the name of the local that was with you.) and that you would be setting the cache with the help of a local. There are probably many reason this wouldn't work, but I covered both of your complaints. In my scenario the local helps set the cache, puts their name on it and it becomes their cache. Sounded alright when I thought about it but maybe not.
  4. I'm still new at this, haven't hid my first cache yet. (Working on it ) However, the idea of placing a cache while on vacation, sounds like fun. I bet if you looked into it you could find a local geocaching club, through which you could maybe connect up with someone who would take responsibility for the cache. This would allow you to meet new people, (the club members) and be able to seek and find a good hiding spot in an area you are visiting. The down side would be the cache would be in someone Else's name, but you would still have that warm feeling of knowing it really was yours. Of course this doesn't change the rules, if you cannot find someone to cache it with you, and take responsibility for it, you would not be able to hide it.
  5. If you looked for six and didn't find any, I'm thinking there may be something else wrong. Is there anyone you know that could check what your doing? Make sure your GPS is set right , (map datum set to WSG84). I've had days when the GPS had me looking in an area 60 or 70 feet off. If I cannot find the cache, I will usually recheck the GPS, walk a little ways off and come back. especially when there is a lot of trees, and foliage. I'm still new at this myself, (this is my first post to the forum). But do not be afraid to check the hints if you need them. And don't give up. You may have just picked six real tough ones for your start.
