  1. This is true, moderation would be needed. Although the cache owner could easily keep an eye on them just as they do with the current logs.
  2. Actually, I kind of like the mini-forum idea, if done correctly. Maybe a Javascript link to expand the replies to a log, so they're not immediately visible. IMDB allows people to post comments on any movie's page, for example, although I don't particularly like their implementation of it. There are plenty of times when I've wanted to make a public comment related to someone's log, but wasn't able to because I didn't want to clutter up the log page with posted notes. What I wanted to say was related to the cache, though.
  3. Oh one more thing... once in Orlando ask around to find out where you can pick up an Orlando Weekly. They're free and available all over. They have a great dining section with reviews of local restaurants. I've found their reviews to be pretty accurate overall. Actually, go to http://www.orlandoweekly.com and click on "Dining". That'll give you all of their reviews. It's also a great source for events, big and small, as well as which singers/bands are playing at the venues scattered around town, such as Cricketer's Arms on I-Drive, or Kate O'Brien's or Central Station Bar downtown.
  4. 1. What are some of the best caches in the Orlando area? My favorite virtual in Orlando, out by the airport: Wings Over Orlando Bridges Over Fern Creek is a really nice area. For the downtown Orlando area, do a search within a mile or two of zip code 32801. There's a bunch, and a couple have a nice view around Lake Eola (especially at night), but most are quick micros for stat purposes. 2. What are some of the best tourist/site seeing places? Eh. I live here. Aside from the parks, my knowledge of tourist traps around here is limited. International Drive has a lot though. 3. Great places to eat. Never been to Shari Sushi Lounge as mentioned earlier, but my current favorite place is Amura Sushi, right on Church Street in the middle of downtown Orlando. Get the Volcano Roll. Seriously. Another one of my favorite sushi places is Ohashi Sushi, but that place burned down a couple of months ago. They're rebuilding though, and may be done by the time you're here. It is (was) on 436 around Casselberry. Best Vietnamese in town: Little Saigon on Colonial Drive, just west of Mills. Thai Food: Napasorn, located in downtown Orlando on Pine St. Dexter's has a really popular Sunday brunch. Great breakfast and lunch place: Christo's Cafe on Edgewater Drive. Pat O'Briens at Universal CityWalk is great for mixed drinks, like the infamous Hurricane. Great Crawfish Nachos appetizer too. Yummy. The Claddagh Cottage -- a GREAT little (very authentic) Irish pub. They have a small, but very excellent, menu of Irish food, such as Shepherd's Pie. Obviously made from scratch. Really, really good. It's on Curry Ford Rd, a little west of Conway. Ran-Getsu of Tokyo: Wonderful, if slightly expensive, Japanese restaurant on International Drive. Very pretty setting, with an unobtrusive show that happens every so often while you eat. It's interesting to watch, but doesn't get in the way of your dining experience. I've been there once, and got hooked on the sukiyaki. I need to go back. 4. Little known places that only locals know about, but everyone should see. Hmmm... I'll post an answer to this one if I can think of something. 5. Tours, shows, events, places to dance. There are plenty of clubs in the downtown Orlando area, depending on what you like, as well as Universal CityWalk and DT Disney.
  5. Well, I haven't yet made it out to the Disney area for much caching. But if you were to go a little out of your way into Orlando, my favorite virtual in the area is there by the Orlando airport: Wings Over Orlando There are loads of caches in the downtown Orlando area, if you're looking for a good place to get your numbers up, but few of them are particularly interesting/exciting. You can see these by doing a search within about 2 miles of the 32801 zip code. There are also several caches around International Drive that are pretty cool, mostly micros in touristy areas. They are located in between Disney and Orlando. Unfortunately I can't help you with the trip from Disney to Palm Beach. My family lives in Coral Springs, not far from there, but I have yet to make any stops along the way when I go to visit, since I always have my dog with me in the car.
  6. The reduced environmental impact is enough for me. Most rechargeables are supposed to be good for at least 500 charges. So even if mine only last for 500 charges, I'm recycling 2 batteries instead of 1000. As far as cost goes, a 4-pack is what, $15 or so? Can't remember. But even at $20 it's $5/battery. Used 500 times, that's 1 cent per charge per battery. And that's ignoring the fact that the NiMH's last longer per charge than alkalines do. But as I said, environmental impact is enough to sell me. Gotta go hug a tree.
  7. There's a cache location near me where the cache has been reported missing. It's last find was May of 2005. However, the owner has four finds and two hides, and last logged in January 2005. I sent him an email asking if he would allow me to adopt the cache so I can set it back up, but he either doesn't use the email address anymore or is just not responding. It's pretty obvious he's not coming back. I'd like to email Groundspeak to see if I can adopt the cache without the owner's consent, but is that okay to do? It's not like I'm trying to steal the guy's cache from him, I just want to see it back in action. I also wouldn't mind adopting his other cache, even though it's still in good shape, just because if something ever does happen to it, I don't want to see it have the same problems.
  8. I was messing around with my profile earlier... It made me think that it would be nice to have the profile viewable by non-members. For example, if I wanted to link to my profile on another site using the Stat Bar. Although, the fields for contact via email and several other personal data fields would have to be missing while not logged in. Also, the ability to enter more than one IM client/username combo would be nice too. It'd be nice to have them all available so that someone with Yahoo can contact me if they want. Right now I can only put my AIM name up there. Just a thought.
  9. Err I should say... its not the current design, but the new one doesn't seem to be forthcoming since the thread was started well over a year ago.
  10. If I'm not mistaken, that thread was talking about the current design, which WAS the new design in 2004, when the thread was started.
  11. Me too. Paypal payment received January 9th. Sent them an email. But the tags are now listed as being on backorder. So who knows how long it will be.
  12. Will that affect the "additional waypoints" feature? Like if a cache has a parking area as an additional waypoint, will it show up as a cache, or like a Parking symbol? Thanks for the advice!
  13. Okay, so I use GPSBabel (the Linux CLI version) to add caches to my 60CS. It works fine if I use the LOC file to do it, but when I try to do it with GPX, the icons are all messed up. Sometimes they are cache icons, sometimes toll booth icons, etc. etc. Of course, "toll booths" don't show up in the Geocache mode. I've tried to figure out the pattern, and Multicaches and Puzzle caches always have the wrong icon. But sometimes even Traditionals do. Right now I'm just using LOC files for everything. But the new Additional WP feature is pretty cool and as far as I know, doesn't work with LOC files. So is there anything I can do to fix this? Other software is out of the question, unless it has a Linux version. I'd rather stick to LOC files than have to reboot into Windows every time I want to update my GPSr. Thanks!! Jeff
  14. That would be a nice feature... Lil Devil's suggestions both require software that doesn't run on Linux. Although I haven't tried to run Cache Clusters in WINE yet. It might work.
  15. Are you going to be near Orlando proper, or closer to the attractions? If you'll be near the attractions, then which ones? The Orlando area (which for some reason includes Disney) is pretty large, so if you're going to be staying out near Disney in Kissimmee, you'll actually probably want to skip the caches in Orlando, because there will be plenty that are closer to you. Unfortunately, due to my n00b status... I've only dealt with caches in Orlando, and a couple in Oviedo.
  16. I've thought about this. I posted a question yesterday about the ability to query the gc database externally, because the only way I could think of to do what you're saying is to create a team page on my own site, then build the team stats manually via SQL.
  17. I haven't done anything with maps, but I love GPSBabel for the simple task of taking a PQ or .loc file and transferring all of the geocache coordinates to the GPSr. (I'm in Linux, btw, so I feel the Mac User Pain, sometimes magnified. Linux GPSBabel is command-line only ). One line does it all: sudo gpsbabel -i geo -f Desktop/geocaching.loc -o garmin -F /dev/ttyUSB0 All of the new points immediately pop up on the map.
  18. No. Not yet. We are actively working on a series of web services that will allow this in the very near future, however. That would be cool. I had thought about creating an unofficial "team" with a couple of friends of mine that are registered separately. It would be cool to be able to do queries, like a unique selection of cache names that the three of us had found, and list them on a page somewhere. Thanks for the response!
  19. Here it is: http://rtr.ca/geo
  20. Sorry if this has been mentioned before... Clicking on an uploaded image in a user's log will show a gallery of all images uploaded with that log. Clicking an image shows the larger image with Previous/Next links to view the rest of the images uploaded with that log without having to back up to the gallery. Cool. Clicking on the cache's gallery shows ALL images from all of the logs for that cache. Clicking an image shows a larger version with the Previous/Next links. But -- User1 uploads A, B, and C. User2 uploads D and E. Cache gallery shows A, B, C, D, E. If you click on D, you can only use Previous/Next to go between D and E. If you click on B, you can only use Previous/Next to view A,B, and C. I just though it would be cool if you can use Previous/Next to go through all of the images IF you clicked on the cache gallery as opposed to the individual log gallery.
  21. I saw an "unofficial" mobile site for doing cache searches yesterday, and it got me wondering about the ability to do a DB query from an external site, such as a personal web page. I haven't seen any information on this though. Is this allowed? If so, is there somewhere I can go to get the details? Thanks! Jeff
  22. Everyone seems to love the Gilsson antenna, and I've been thinking about getting one. Looking around on Amazon, it's only $20. But here's the thing... There's another one on Amazon here, with claims of a "32db to 55db gain" off of 18mA. Input voltage is 3 to 12vdc. Has anyone ever used one of these, and if so, what's the word? It just looks a little sketchy to me, especially since it still has zero reviews.
