  1. I searched a little but did not find much on the topic. I checked here and the Garmin Wiki. Anyway, I was hiking quite a bit yesterday with my Oregon 550 and wanted to check the track log. I went to track manager--current track--view map to see the distance we had gone. It said something like .70 when I knew we had gone at least two, and it never seemed to be accurate. Today I took a very short path to a cache and noticed when viewing the track on the way back to the car that the distance on the "view map" page was decreasing. I did not hit track back. I will confess to being new to using the track features, but I would think that the distance should be all that we walked since the track was started---even if we walked part of the track twice. I am just trying to figure out what is happening. By the way, I did clear the current track before beginning the hike. Thanks to anyone that can shed some light on this for me.
  2. I haven't had the nerve to try this yet, but what if the GPX folder were deleted from the Oregon and replaced with a GPX folder on the sd card. Then there might be one GPX folder for the Oregon to read from, OR would the Oregon automatically recreate a GPX folder to replace the one deleted?? Just a thought
  3. So does anyone have a 550 that reads from the sd card? Perhaps there is a work around??
  4. I just returned my 400t for a 550 I ordered at REI. Low and behold the 550 will not read the GPX files on the card!! This does bum me out as I too like to have multiple cards with me.
  5. Well, for some reason my caches were on the Oregon's internal memory. I can't remember why I did that because I always put them on an sd card. Anyway, for the heck of it I created a GPX folder inside a Garmin folder on the card. I put my GPX files (all caches) into the GPX folder and they did show up on my Oregon. Oh, I did delete the GPX files from the internal memory of the Oregon. Senior moment it is Oops, forgot to mention that I do have a map from city nav. on the sd card as well.......it is in the Garmin folder.
  6. I got one on order And will return my Oregon 400 to rei when it comes in. I am trading up mostly for the better compass. My explorist has the same type of compass and that was the one feature I misses when dropping Magellan and going with garmin.
  7. What a coincidence! I just got the below response from REI: Thank you for the email inquiring about the Garmin Oregon 550t. We are expecting to get them the beginning of August 2009. However Garmin is known for pushing back the date on new products. So they are expecting to get them to us the beginning of August, but that could change. Unfortunately, I don't know if or when the stores will carry the item. We do have free shipping to an REI store. Below I have included a link that has more information on REI store pickup:
  8. I have paid for all of my maps...so far. But for all the trouble I have had with my Colorados and the maps I don't think I'd have a problem using a key gen. It would be vry nice to be able to bypass the techs that I have a hard time sitting on hold for as I work the same hours they do.
  9. I had a similar problem last week. The tech had me open notepad on my computer and paste the 25 digit code o to it. From there I saved it as file "gmapsupp.unl" on my desktop. O was told to be sure to save it as an all type file. I then copied and pasted the file in the garmin folder on the gps. I hope this makes some sense. It worked for me.
  10. I'm trying to figure out the main differences between the Oregon and Dakota, aside from the compass. Can anyone shed light on this?
  11. My brother has a similar problem with his Nuvi. I put in an sd card with some caches on them and after taking the card out he still sees the cache icons. We're not sure what to do on that one either.
  12. That has not been my experience. I have found quite a few recycled pill containers. I haven't seen too many that won't leak,
  13. I just sent my second one back due to a sporadic wheel and the "enter" button no longer working. I too have had problems with the CO when connected to the car adapter. It shuts off on its own and usually takes several attempts to get it back up. A far as the battery issue, have you made sure the CO is not set to record air pressure intermittently???
  14. Drat! Wish I would have known that a couple weeks ago.
  15. I know that this may not be very helpful, but this happens to my CO every once in a while in the car. Just two days ago I was following a route and went to change the destination and this happened. I am not sure what the deal is, but the only way I can get it back on is to keep trying. I went through several attempts at start up before success. IMHO I think this is a software issue. I would be curious to find out if anyone else has this problem.
  16. For what it is worth, I just slipped my Oregon into my Explorist case from Gilsson and it fits very nicely....It is almost as if it is made for it. I have very little problem using the touchscreen.
  17. I have used the Foarm cases, and while they are a good idea, all you do to close the shell over the GPS is cinch a string, and then you have this long loop left that is supposed to go around your neck. I don't place my GPS around my neck and find the extra string very annoying. I like the Gilsson cases, but they haven't come out with anything new in a while. I heard they were supposed to come up with a Co case, but that never happened. for now I too use the IS and and very happy with it on my CO and OR.
  18. Thinking the same thing as I'll probably get my 400t tomorrow. Since REI has a 100% satisfaction guarantee... in theory, we could exchange the 400t for a 550t (+ price difference) when it comes out. I picked my 400t up at REI last weekend and told the sales guy I was on the fence as the 550 was due out soon. I specifically asked him if I could return the 400t later for the 550 when it was released and he told me that I definitely could. This was when I decided to kick myself for not getting my Colorado at REI as I could of switched it out for the Oregon 400. I am not sure how thay afford to do this. What if everyone that got the 400t decided to trade up (and of course pay the difference)? Let's hope that this really works out. I love the idea of the improved compass!
  19. IMHO if a cacher hiding a cache can use it as a clue to a puzzle cache (I have seen a few), then I would think they are certainly fair game when seeking a cache.
  20. I asked a staff member at REI when I was picking up my 400t as my only hesitation to getting the 400 was the future release of the 500. He did not know when to expect it, but he reminded me that I could always bring my 400 back and exchange it for the 500. Again, I am kicking myself for getting my Colorado eslewhere.
  21. Thanks for the illustrated answer. It would be nice if there were an "other" choice on the main menu with everything else like the Colorado.
  22. I just got mine today and am kicking myself for not purchasing my Colorado at REI. I could have returned it today for an exchange. As for the extra 20% discount, the fine print reads that you can't use it on prices ending in ._3 or ._9---Hence using it on the Oregon is out. It's still nice to have the discount in the future though.
