  1. The answer is simple. If the MN Geo Club Bug makes it to the "big time" and any cash is won...we will decline the money. Having fun is what this is all about. How many of you complainers belong to a local Geo Cache club? How many of you have been to a Geo picnic? Whine about something important. Let the rest of us have our own fun. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  2. Click on the cache page, upper right corner - Edit. Check or uncheck box members only. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  3. I post my new caches as Members Only initially until the first finder gets the T Bug out. This is a great hobby, inexpensive, and one that we could not do without this web site. Paying $ 30 a year to support it is well worth the change. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  4. I bought a Travel Bug and log it on the caches I find. Keeps track of your mileage also. I am almost at 6,000 miles this year. Just remember to log it in, and then pick it up again, when you do so. Otherwise someone will go there trying to find the bug. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  5. Thanks Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  6. I know there was a discussion on this a while back, but...I lost it. Why does Travel Bug mileage appear for some bugs but for all? I recently started one to track my personal finds and no mileage is appearing. Thanks Scott Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  7. Just curious...are you an engineering student in college? Way too detailed orientated and tight with the $ 15 (I have a brother like that). ;-) Neoprane = water resistant Clear Plastic Cover = waterproof in that area Redundant = Yes. The Meridian is supposedly waterproof already. Open/Close = Velcroe - Zip and Rip Fit = Tight Bike = Yes, you must remove from case. Cake = Have it all and eat it too. Mad = Don't get mad, get Glad. quote:Originally posted by Jamie Z:Hmmm, if the buttons are hard to push, maybe my dang GPS won't turn off by itself if I happen to hold it the wrong way. Waterproof? Isn't that redundant? Ok, I understand the concept of placing a waterproof object inside something else waterproof for even more protection (kinda like rubbermaid containers inside plastic bags ) but is the case itself waterproof, or do you mean to say that the case simply makes it more difficult for the water to get in around the buttons? My last question regarding the neoprene case is this. How easy is it to remove the GPS from the case? I often use my Meridian in my bicycle mount, or in my vehicle mount. I'm guessing that while in the case, it won't fit in the mount, so I'd have to remove it. Is that a simple procedure? Jamie Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.

  9. No way! Millie loves the hunt as much as I do. All I ask is that people tell us in their post of any potential hazardous areas. People with dogs, or children, would appreciate the heads up. And no, she has not found a cache for me yet. Her sniffer is not tuned to that scent...only organics get her attention. It would be nice if other dog owners would teach their dogs to crap off the trail though... or at least remove it for them afterwards. Even dog lovers hate to step in it. Now if only we could get the deer, bear, moose, and more to do the same. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  10. I paid my $ 30 because I do not want to see Pop Up ads appearing here. Running a web site is expensive and I appreciate the fun I get out of Geocaching. When I create a new cache or Travel Bug, I make it members only until after the first member finds it. Then I open it to the public. So, yes, membership does have a tangible reward to those who support the site financially. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  11. Considering that the case is only $ 15 .... this discussion is really getting in depth as to the value of it. I personally would not cut any holes in the plastic. This would defeat the waterproofing nature of the clear plastic cover and weaken the case leading to its early demise in the lifecycle. If it dosn't work as designed, return it to the store where you bought you bought it for a refund. I like mine and use it all the time without any problems. quote:Originally posted by Zahrim:From what I have heard on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Magellan_Meridian This case seems to be a good case for the most part. The one problem I have heard about is that the plastic cover over the buttons can be a pain, and cause the unit to turn. The fix they suggested was to cut the plastic out around the button area. quote:Originally posted by drewreger: The GPS Store offers a custom case made for the entire meridian series. Anyway, that's the case we were discussing, but several of us (well... two) were looking for opinions of the case. Is it worth it? Is it hard to push the buttons through the screen? Does it have a place for a lanyard? Jamie Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  12. Yes, they work great. No problems pushing the buttons thru the plastic cover. No lanyard though.. that would be nice. Buy it! I did. 13. I learned this trick with my laptop computer: Create a waypoint in your GPS (or a Word file in your laptop) and title it "if found". If your unit is lost or stolen, hopefully the finder will call you if you give him your home phone number, address or coordinates.
  14. www.thegpsstore.com sold me a neoprane case that clips on your belt for my Magellan Platinum. Sheds water, fits tight, and was only around $ 10. I would like a lanyard type of hook up if someone knows of one. What a deal!
  15. I like this idea. It will me a running total of my geocaching mileage. Now I need to order some more bugs. Thanks!
  16. I wish more people would note corrections. It sucks to hunt for something in the brush only to see it in the open 40 feet away. I usually log my coordinates when I find a cache if they are differant from the person who posted it. It is not an insult to correct someone who is saying or doing something incorrectly. On the contrary, it is a compliment. My old high school football coach told me he only yelled at those of us he liked and who he thought could improve. He must have loved me... even the great ones are wrong sometimes. :-)
  17. Wasn't he a drunken senator who killed his girlfriend geocaching off a bridge in the dark? 39 for me, 2 1/2 for Millie, and 23 for Amber.
  18. I too have wondered how to promote the sport more. The more people involved the better it will be. I wonder why the manufacturers are not doing more to promote this? Seems to me they should be leading the charge to sell more units... My thoughts for you: Contact the tourist office, chamber of commerce, the cruise ships that dock... maybe you could start your own business and rent GPS units to the tourists who get off the boat? The local newspapers, national ones, the State Natural Resources Department (bastards that they usually are here in MN) etc... Hope this helps.

  20. It's not the destination (the contents of the box) but the journey to the cache. Personally, I prefer just a notebook to sign and not bother with the trading of do-dads. Personally, I am not worried I might be corrupted by seeing a bible or porn in a cache. I am here for the hike and nothing more. To each his own.
  21. I have not tried the other brands, but my Magellan Platinum works great. I like the mapping function -- shows me streams, hills, and roads. I use it in my airplane, my car, and my boat. It is also waterproof and floats. The compass and altimeter are handy little extras. Spend more money than you think you afford. In the long run... you won't be disappointed and have to justify buying another one. Shop around online and you may find a good deal. I bought mine at www.thegpsstore.com Oh if only I knew then what I know now... color and big screens for the car is on my next wish list.
  22. I became a member to support the cost of running this game that has given me so much otherwise low cost entertainment. Banner ads suck and I hope we can keep them off the site by more people becoming members. Therefore, in the interest of increasing membership, my future caches that I create will be Members Only. Freeloaders tick me off...especially those who vote that way also. Scott
  23. I bought the Magellan Platinum after thoroughly researching various models. The deciding factor for me was memory and the ability to add more. The Platinum allows for additional, or mulitple, memory chips - the 76 does not. The rest of the features were pretty close in 'value' in my mind.
  24. Has anyone made a sun visor for heat and sun glare that would shade a Mag-Platinum on a car dashboard? I am working with paper cut outs at the moment...
  25. Try the www.gpsstore.com I bought a water proof neoprene belt thingymabob from them for $ 14. Works great. But I would like a neck strap too...
