  1. Yes, it seemed that a good time was had by all. Even with the rain. It was fun taking folks on the short cache hunts and seeing their new interest in getting a GPS blossom. They had a cider press there and the fresh squeezed juice was the best! Got to finish Slinger91's Half Moon Cache that we started hunting in February of last year. it was awesome!
  2. phishychick, I'm surprised that no one has extended an invitation for you to join us in our hobby. You seem pretty cool yourself and I'm sure that you would be an excellent geocacher. Our hobbies aren't really that different, I think you might enjoy a cache or two! Best wishes in your stamp recovery effort. Cool bridge, by the way!
  3. that happened to me as well. Second attempt, I waited for the CD to completely "spin down" then inserted disk 2. without hitting the cancel or retry buttons, I grabbed and moved the "wrong volume" warning box from on top of the "insert disk2" box and hit the "OK" button there. The "wrong volume" box remained throughout the reading of disk2 then went away when it prompted for and I reinserted disk 1. It was really annoying, but managed to get it installed with a bit of trial and error. On a related note, I went through 2 sets of City Select with install errors claiming to have " .cab file corrupt". I retried in a different cd drive and it worked. Same thing when I upgraded so I switched drives again then encountered the "wrong volume" trouble. Kind of glad that it's not just me. Hope this helps
  4. Thanks Markwell! That PQ/Bookmark tip is cool! Not only does it combine a couple existing bookmarks, I think it will help reduce my portion of the server load. I'll ask before I find out by experimentation... Will the bookmark continue to work if I delete that query? Thanks again!
  5. "Type A" has little or nothing to do with a number posts or finds and certainly, in my opinion, is not a goal to acheive. I was trying to say that some people might feel (some strongly) that taking without a trade of some kind as being tacky or contributing to the decline of a cache. Asking for opinions on these subjects almost always creates a heated discussion between purists and elitists against no-rules and it's just a game folks. Cheers, happy caching, good times...etc
  6. You will probably get different opinions on this. Personally, I would trade not just something, but something nice, for a coin. Also, unless it was an especially coveted coin, I wouldn't return to a found cache to get one. If you do return to a found cache and take a coin without a trade, it is my observation that announcing it in the forums would be a mistake. If it seems fishy enough for you to ask, you can bet that some of the "type A" forum posters will think so too. Try to remember something you may have seen or read around here someplace: Trade up, trade even, or don't trade at all.
  7. Although a few years old, a comprehensive look at how the GPS works can be found in the Trimble Tutorial. To get the most from this, you will need a decent attention span and shockwave.
  8. Tell them that they want to be like Arkansas. Complete with their own website!
  9. You can look at the "Geocaching.com maps (shows caches)" linked on every cache description page for maps that pan, zoom, show, and identify caches. Probably not exactly what you're asking for, but, I've found it handy at times. Pocket queries are the only way to filter by dates placed, that I'm aware of. GSAK is a great program to use once you get a few queries downloaded. It keeps a master database and will filter and sort just about anything you can imagine.
  10. I think it's best to put pieces in each of the steps to find the final. What if you went away from your computer on vacation or even the bathroom for a couple minutes? Many people won't like having to wait for a cache owner to answer an email and they probably won't like interrupting their hunt to have to do this. I've seen exceptions pulled off by more famous cachers with more difficult puzzles and well advertised caches. None, however, with all the wpts in a single park. Here's one we did last week that was very enjoyable: Contack Puzzle
  11. When you "GO TO" a waypoint, you need to choose the "Off Road" option. If it doesn't ask to choose between "Follow Road" and "Off Road" you need to change the setting by going into> Set Up>Routing>Guidance Method, select "Prompted". This is the preferred setting because it will then ask everytime you "GO TO" if you want autorouted road directions or ATCF offroad distance and bearing with the arrow. If you use the road directions to get close enough to park, on the map page hit "Menu" and select "Recalculate" then choose "Offroad" to switch over to the ATCF mode. Hope this helps, happy hunting!
  12. After re-reading the original post, let me add... When you turned on the GPS at the trailhead, you were at the intended starting place listed by the cache owner. Close enough in fact to display the "Arriving" notice as soon as it was directed to find the cache. This is not uncommon at all, particularly at a trailhead. Subsequent coords to the waypoints and cache will then have to be entered manually according to information in the description and or clues found along the way. Here is an example of a multi-cache with listed coords at a trailhead.
  13. it seems to me that the "Arriving" notice pops up when the unit thinks that you are 10 seconds away. This distance changes according to your average speed on the approach. Chances are good that it will take more than 10 seconds because you will probably be slowing or stopping as you get closer. It's a great GPS and does it's job well. It gets you to the coords entered. A very large percentage of caches are purposely listed with near by or starting point coords and all hunts should begin by reading the cache description. Especially multi and mystery caches. Not all of the information to find a cache is loaded in the GPS and you will probably be dissapointed if you simply hit "Find Geocache" and go without first reading the description. Hope this helps...have fun!
  14. Just loaded the City Select version 6 upgrade. Grabbed roughly the same area as before to load into the 60CS and it totaled about 83 meg. Ouch!!! Before, with ver 5, the 56meg max would hold all of Washington and Oregon; Vancouver BC; western Idaho and a bit of Northern Calif. Now it gets only Washington, Vancouver, and Portland for my 56 megs. I'm sure that it's not just new roads added. Wished there was a way to filter out some of the unused POIs. It did, however, fix a problem where there was an extra empty"Washington" in the Region list and it finds addresses better now. Makes me wonder if the 76 really is that uncomfortable to hold.
  15. If you're quick, you may even get in on the beautiful new Washington State Geocoins initial order.
  16. You might check with Bazzle. There's a batch due any day now. old thread Are they here yet, Bazzle?
  17. Neck deep in a stagnant swamp, I managed to snap a shot of myself while keeping the camera, gps, and smokes from getting soaked. Of course I found the dry route out after finding the cache!
  18. I've used the irfan viewer for years. It really is a good free program! Get it here!
  19. Yay! Just recieved the one that was generated at noon today. I'm sure the rest are going to be on their way soon. Thanks for the jumpstart!
  20. I'd like to throw in a "Me Too" too. The same weekly 3 queries not showing up yet today. They worked fine last week and yesterday's were good too. They usually show up early in the morning. Only one of the three was shown to be generated just after noon today, but, no mail. Not a thing that will keep me home all weekend. Just wondering if there's a problem.
  21. Just City Select is loaded. Don't know why Washington is listed twice in the "Region" list. It only works if I choose the other Washington on the list.
  22. When I try to find an address it only lists one city, Point Roberts, Canada. I've loaded Pacific NW maps 3 times with the same result. When I quit/back up to select a region, it shows BC, Idaho, Oregon, California, and Washington twice. It defaults to the "Washington" that only contains "POINT ROBERTS, CAN" as the only city. If I select the other "Washington", it will then list all the cities properly, and I can proceed from there. I'm trying to figure out how to delete the "Point Roberts" Washington from the map list. or at least change the default to the Washington that works. Any ideas?
  23. REI has them in stock. Atleast they did last month when I needed mine "right now". It was a ver.5 but Garmin sends a new ver.6 upgrade free. HTH

    Are Polls Fair?

I read these forums regularly and can't remember the last time I saw a poll, let alone one that was meaningful. I've even wondered why the button was still there. If Jeremy is considering scrapping the polling feature, it would be fine by me.
  25. The official city site doesn't seem as "down" on caching as the news report did. I hope they can work thing out. Open Space & Mountain Parks Responds to Geocachers
