  1. In Pender County, NC there is a game land preserve open to the public for both hunting and hiking call Holly Shelter Game Land. Geocachers have drawn the unwanted attention of state officials due to the fact that there are 600+ geocaches in the preserve (yes...600+) and possibly in areas that state officials don't want them to be located. Do a Google news search for "Holly Shelter Game" and it should bring you to the Jacksonville Daily News article. The state's Eye of Sauron has been placed on this location!
  2. You must have scared him....just looked at his profile and there are no longer any images there....cleaned house!
  3. Yes...I believe using WAAS does slightly decrease battery life, but using WAAS is worth it.
  4. Looking at the bar graph display on my GPSMAP60C on the satellite page, anyone know what the "D" is that shows up in the bars?
  5. GPS came back today from Garmin...they confirmed the no power problem and just sent me a new unit...minus the belt clip button that was still attachd to the old unit. Will now play the waiting game for them to send me the missing part. HOWEVER....that will not stop me from firing it up and using it again!!!!
  6. My GPSMAP60C crapped out Sunday. I was approaching a local caching-rich area near home and fired up (or I should say, TRIED) the GPS to start acquiring the sats....no power at all! Unit wouldn't turn on. Tried new batteries X2 (and yes...made sure they were installed correctly...). This unit is only 1 month old. Garmin emailed me the RMA number this morning for it's return with a 7 - 9 business day turn-around time. Anyone else experience this no power fault before????
  7. Several waypoints were downloaded to my GPSMAP60C from geocaching.com. The accuracy between what I downloaded and actual locations were right on the money. It's just that the basemap installed with the unit shows a string of waypoints out in the middle of the river...and when I am standing at one of the waypoints, the basemap shows me standing about 100 yards out in the river. So...accuracy of the unit itself is not in question....the waypoints and the GPS match up.......it's the graphical representation of the basemap. That's why I was asking if it improves if I purchase and install something like CitySelect. That way it doesn't show me walking on water when I'm actually on dry land.
  8. Thanks for the input. I'm headed back there late this afternoon to waypoint the first 4 locations. I'll let everyone know what happens.
  9. Correct on the Captain Thomas Smith caches. Starting from the first, each cache held the lat/long of the next piece to find. 5 total parts to find. I found the first 4. All the caches were spread in a rough arc appox. 600-900 feet apart along the trail. I'm going to make a return trip this week to waypoint all first 4 locations. But once I have those first 4 lats/longs, what then??? The last one I found (4 of 5) tells me to triangulate the first 4 locations to find the final part. I'll email the cache owner for a little nudge also.
  10. The installed base map on my 60C is way off - marking a waypoint at a local park shows up on the map as in the middle of a river (which in reality is about a half mile away). Does installing CitySelect improve accuracy - or will it still mark in the river???
  11. One of the caches I'm working on is a multi staged cache. I've found 4 of 5 caches. The next to last cache tells me to use triangulation and dead reckoning to find the spot of the final container. Each container contained the coordinates for the next container in the series (& no...I didn't write them down). It's not a problem for me to retrace my steps and mark a waypoint for the first 4 containers, but I have no clue on how to triangulate from that point on. Might be easy, but my brain is malfunctioning for the moment and I'm drawing a blank. Location is in a park packed with trees/brush - so you can't view any of the containers from each other. I have a Garmin GPSMAP60C. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
