  2. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy (Admin):Did I shoplift or something? I seem to be getting a lot of media attention. Maybe I look disturbing in person... Polling shows that people prefer you in graytones. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  3. quote:Originally posted by Radman Version 2.0:I just wanted some suggestions to go along with the dummy to make this shack a great part of the whole hunt for the cache. I suggest more insurance. If you invite people onto your property (by posting the coordinates of a geocache), then you deliberately set out to scare them with or without warning, the reactions to your display could include injuries and lawsuits. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  4. quote:Originally posted by LarsThorwald:Am I the only one who's thinking Jeremy is sitting at home right now checking up on his local anti-stalking laws? If this thread didn't prompt Jeremy to do that, geospotter's post to Strange Avatars cetainly should. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  5. quote:Originally posted by Geo-Johnson's:I think he's seducing us with his new avatar.......look into his eyes and try to figure out what he's thinking......... Perhaps he's thinking......Hey baby, guess what color underwear I'm wearing. To me, it looks more like Jeremy can guess what color of underwear we forum users are wearing. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  6. quote:Originally posted by tahoeberne:Jesus, The name is green...wcgreen quote: are we going to come up next with, "What color underwear do you prefer Jeremy wears?" Let's not idolize, mythologize, or idealize Jeremy......uh....that is......much more than we already have.... The 'Frivolous' should have warned you. Should Jeremy ever pose in his underwear, I'm certain that someone will comment on it. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  7. quote:Originally posted by Markwell:Either the thoughtful Orson Welles look, or that drunken-half-awake look on http://www.switchbacks.com/files/Geocaching/Geoquilt_5.jpg. Was this from his award-winning one-man performance of Hansel and Gretel? He looks like the Wicked Witch is about to eat him. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  8. A completely frivolous poll prompted by the new administrator avatar (something about his eyes gives me the creeps): Which photo of Jeremy Irish do you prefer? -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  9. quote:Originally posted by Jennifer & Dean:An attribute I'd like to see is one that identifies access. Some caches can be driven to, but only if you don't mind really bad roads. Having recently paid for a new oil pan and transmission, how about an attribute that asks for access quality? I.E.: Trailhead Access: All, High Clearance, or 4X4 only Or Road Quality: Paved, Gravel, Dirt, Unmaintained, Never maintained, There is a road here? Mostly stream, and last but not least... Boulder Field. Can't this info be obtained from a decent map of the area? If no colored lines are near the cache on the map, there are no roads--don't risk your vehicle unless it's off-road enabled. Granted, we did do some camping off dirt roads in a Jaguar XJ6, but it wasn't good for the car. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  10. quote:Originally posted by Dekaner of Team KKF2A:per-say (sp?) Since you asked, it's 'per se'. A Latin phrase meaning 'in or by itself; intrinsically' -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  11. quote:Originally posted by Chazman007:This kind of scares me that kids are rooting around in the cache without any adults watching. Do you let your kids go into the knife drawer or gun case at home without supervising them??? Back when we had kids (before they became adults and left home), yes--I would let them go into the knife drawer. I'd also let them use the oven, stove, blender, toaster, tea kettle, electric mixer, power sander, electric drill, circular saw, hot water faucet, washer, dryer, hammer, screw drivers, tire iron, et alia. How else can you get work out of kids if they can't use the tools? (granted, I did make certain they knew how to use these things) -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  12. quote:Originally posted by Criminal:Anybody else find it disturbing that the kids were banned from an outdoor activity because of this? Maybe some "safe" computer games are better? Wouldn't it be easier and better for the kids to learn to identify poison ivy, oak, and sumac?.... It is disturbing and sad. The mother, who did not go caching, sounds to me like someone who stayed indoors a lot as a kid herself--it's a pity that she never developed a like for the all-outdoors. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  13. quote:Originally posted by BASSETSLAVE:I am brand new to GPS and Geocaching. I have just recently ordered my first GPS,(I am waiting with baited breath for it to arrive). I have completed my research on cache sites in and around Elizabethtown KY. Now I am ready to start learning how to use my GPS and apply it to Geocaching, when it arrives some time in the next week or two. Hope I run into some of you on the elusive trail of the things to be found the things to be traded and the things to be cached. Head over to the South and Southeast forum and the Kentucky PING discussion. We're holding a lunch in Lexington on the 14th of December. Don't wait to run into us on a trail--come meet the entire group of us at once. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  14. quote:Originally posted by ClayJar:wcgreen, is that "http://www.tilley.com/shop3.asp?productno=T3&detail=low&path=rootTilley_Hats" or "http://www.tilley.com/shop3.asp?productno=LT3&detail=low&path=rootTilley_Hats"? I recognized it as a http://www.tilley.com/ hat instantly... did you actually buy one, or just lift the pic? I've been pondering one for a few years now, but I've always stuck with the $5-10 _el cheapo_ hats. I wear a real Tilley, or did until it tore at the sweatband while being washed last week. As soon as Tilley replaces it, I'll wear one again. Given that it was almost 10 years old and had been worn hard, I'm not unhappy. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  15. Walking in front is referred to as "web-eating" in our family (as in "It's your turn to eat some webs.") Webs that I can walk under get my husband in the face -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  16. quote:Originally posted by Sea_Dog:Re-learned an important lesson today. Use a stick to retrieve a cache! It was in the 30's and my hands were cold. Blindly reached under something to grab a cache. Felt a little prick as I was pulling it out. Turns out I didn't get bit but I was a little nervous for a few hours. My first job was at an ice cream parlor in Daytona Beach, a hotbed of banana spider activity. I opened the store one Sunday late morning to find a large spider in the display case next to the 5-gallon container of Rocky Road. Zero degrees is not good for spiders. It shattered when I tried to remove it. Not knowing the correct Board of Health procedures, I cleaned up all the bits and wiped down the inside of the case. I am very glad I spotted it before a customer did.... -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  17. quote:Originally posted by Centaur:You are no longer a newbie if you have been here long enough to know what Markwelling is. (Which is a good trick, considering it was only coined last month...) We should create a newbie test covering the basic phrases, legends, lore, and photo-recognition of famous avatars. Something like: 1. A doot is: a. what you owe Jeremy for creating geocaching.com b. what you do on a trade item flute c. what you find in large bags handing from trees d. what you say when you can't find the cache and your kids are with you 2. Rubbertoe found his original avatar: a. on the end of his foot b. on the end of his nose c. on a foot fetish web site d. while playing footsie at McDonald's -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  18. quote:Originally posted by drs: We in Dallas need some longer hikes. We've got some cool caches, but the longest I've hiked is about a half mile, on No Walk in the Park. I bought a Rand McNally DFW "Streetfinder" and have picked out some fairly big parks, so hopefully I can put some caches there that will provide a bit of a walk. Head west a bit and try this one north of Roanoke: Pick It Up, Pack it Out, Cache in, Trash Out Cache Round trip is 2.25 miles and, if you do it at daybreak, you may see longhorns and a white deer (I did.) -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  19. quote:Originally posted by Alan2:Anyone ever use this stuff. What kind do you use? Anyone ever attached by a dog? USe spray? Discussion. This forum post by lyra will enlighten you: Pepper spray and pistols -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  20. quote:Originally posted by Sissy-n-CR: Apologies might had been accepted if it were sincere, but it was just another snide dig. Most people have pretty good reading comprehension unless you steer them somewhere the text didn't go. It is obvious this is what you are trying to do. Why is that? You have mistaken formality and good grammar for snideness. Perhaps the paranoia that you fear has gotten to you. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  21. quote:Originally posted by Sissy-n-CR: quote:Originally posted by wcgreen:Since you consider Bush to be a murderer... Since you'd argue with me about the sky being blue on a clear day, not to mention the quote above--where you got that, I have no idea--this is more response than what you deserve. My apologies--I thought you had equated Bush and his administration with Bin Laden and his ilk. Since those beings are murderers, tyrants, etc., I thought you considered the members of the current administrator to be the same. If that is not what you meant, then I must have misread your words. Again, my apologies. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  22. quote:Originally posted by Sissy-n-CR:Excellent points. Before 9/11, domestic terrorists were played down. Why? It could be a "not my neighbor" mentality--they're just as American as I am. But school shooting are more likely to happen than hijackings. When was the previous hijacking in the U.S.? The best answer I could find was here:http://www.airsafe.com/events/hijack.htm. I seem to remember a bunch of fuss about militant militias, abortion clinic bombings and murders, etc. before 9/11/2001. Given the press coverage of all those groups (plus the coverage of Ruby Ridge and Waco), "played down" would not be my phrase of choice. quote:You're many, many more times to die in an automobile accident than a terrorist plot. Anyway, the tragedy perpetrated by Timothy MeVeigh did not have near the sweeping life altering changes the Bush administration is doing to his _own people!_ All in the name of fighting terrorists. Timothy McVeigh didn't have thousands and thousands of followers (some of whom are in the governments of other countries). McVeigh, in all likelihood, was a lone nutcase. The world wasn't treated to more murders, shootings, bombings, hi-jackings, etc. in his name. I truly wish I could say that about Bin Laden quote:What the Bush administration is doing to no different than what Bin Laden and his ilk have done. They've "created" an enemy to garner power for their own egos. Why would Bush do this? Haven't heard much about his fiscal dealings much have you? Makes you wonder. So Bush got all those Democrats to back this scheme because they didn't want his fiscal dealings to be known? Wow--I wish I had that kind of power (I bet Bush does, too. ) There are people out there who don't like the West enough to kill. Bush and "his ilk" didn't create them--they merely surfaced at this time in history. quote:I'm sorry and embarrassed to say I voted for Bush. I can easily see that was a mistake. Since you consider Bush to be a murderer on par with Bin Laden, a tyrant, an oppressor, and a shredder of the Constitution, Bush probably is embarassed by your vote. It's a real shame that you didn't detect these huge character flaws before you voted. quote:Now, it looks like the American people are going to pay. Some of them already did--their names were read last Sept. 11th. What everyone wants is that no one else pays that same price. Find yourself an Israeli and get yourself laughed at for your (and your country's) naivete. You can have all the freedom you want--with it goes an increase in the chance that your body parts will be scattered all over the countryside. Judging from the consensus and the votes, most of your fellow citizens prefer to lessen the chances. quote:Subtle changes along the way and the next thing we know public land will be for some other public than us. We can already see it happening. Yep--forbidding caching at Hoover Dam makes me unfree. <*sigh*> -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  23. Ponce Inlet by Christmas 2002 has been in cache William & son falls in creek near Brevard, NC. since the beginning of October. (An out-of-town cacher told me that he had placed it there thinking it was an active cache that would help my TB to its goal.) Is there anyone local to this cache that could grab my TB and give it a better chance at meeting me in Florida this December? -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  24. I'll be near Daytona Beach for the holidays and will be caching with husband, dog, and some neophyte family members. Recommendations for good starter caches to hook my niece and nephew and any 'must-do' caches in Volusia, Flagler, and Brevard will be appreciated. -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
  25. quote:Originally posted by jrav:We went to a cache last weekend that originally contained $100. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=37862 Those before us took $10 each and left their standard (worth much less than $10) trade items. We took $10 and left a cheapo pencil sharpener. As I noted in my log, it didn't feel right, but everyone else did it. We still feel guilty - just because everyone else does it doesn't make it the right thing to do, so we plan to go back this weekend to leave something nicer. Bets that the number watching this cache increased because jrav announced a willingness to "do the right thing"? Anyone know? -- wcgreen Wendy Chatley Green
