  1. Here's the official one. Good luck G&M! http://www.geocaching.com/android/default.aspx
  2. Maybe the account rep showed the CEO how much they were getting paid for those 2 million site visits.
  3. Do you really consider two or more people collaborating on solving a puzzle (when none of the collaborators has previously solve it) "cheating"? I suspect SwineFlew is referring to the call-a-friend-and-have-him-just-tell-you-the-coordinates-of-the-cache-he-solved-months-ago network, not the get-together-with-old-pals-and-brainstorm-together network.
  4. There is another thread you may be interested in. Sad indeed. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=290054
  5. This isn't the first time this has been floated out there, and I agree that it could make for a good solution. I think the introduction of Challenges will be an impediment though.
  6. I still run out for a number of FTF attempts each month, but I haven't hid any new caches since August 2010. I got to a point where I was only just able to keep up with the caches I already owned. I'm pretty sure putting more caches out at this point would just lead to poor maintenance on my part; I figured it would be better to maintain a smaller number of caches reasonably well, than a larger number of caches more poorly. YMMV.
  7. The constraints are basically as follows: - No new traveling caches, as per Groundspeak - For grandfathered listings, the owner may sometimes request that the cache not leave a particular area. Some caches may not leave a particular park, some a city or county, others a state. Some have missions, like many Travel Bugs would. Many have no limitations.
  8. This is true. I have found a couple of traveling caches, and every once in a while I am surprised by my states map, or my miles-cached-in-a-day stat.
  9. I would describe myself as an enthusiast, but I don't know why I wouldn't like that analysis. It seems neither incorrect, nor insulting.
  10. No! Really? You were reading my mind, I was just plotting it out on a map earlier today. Hmph.
  11. Lord Elwood maintains the best Traveling Cache bookmark list that I am aware of: http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=0d09db46-424c-4d31-9a65-f7aa2c549617
  12. I couldn't have said it any better. Nor I.
  13. That's a great suggestion. I'd imagine it would work well with most reasonable CO's.
  14. I consider them calling card swag, to be traded for if you like them and subsequently kept if you're so inclined (and maybe logged on a website, etc.). In the same way that I will sometimes trade for other cool calling cards... I have made special visits to caches before to trade for a Team Mumu Fish for my kids, and I once traded an unactivated geocoin to a fellow who beat me to a Team-Ducky Duck that had been placed in one of my caches. I think pathtags play in the same neighborhood.
  15. Debatable, but you more than made up for it with an old-school frequency analysis / ciphertext attack. That's some throwback stuff right there...
  16. I have used this site in the past, to good effect. It calculates a geographical centroid for two or more points. I own a puzzle that requires finding the centroid of 19 caches, and I've sent this link to folks who don't have GSAK: http://www.geomidpoint.com/
  17. I usually try to help people help themselves, giving people a nudge in the right direction but still allowing them to have that Aha! moment of discovery on their own. At the end of the day if someone is really stumped and having a hard time, I'll often be as explicit as they want me to be.
  18. I think there are a lot of inanimate items / objects that folks would consider deface-able. A cliff face; a boulder; the side of a building; etc. Best is to exercise care and caution no matter the surface.
  19. I think it's unlikely to be published, but if it were to be published at all it would almost assuredly only be with prior permission / discussion with your local reviewer. If you did the carving first and then it was discovered after submission / publication, your cache would likely be archived right quick and it might even cost you some relationship points with your reviewer. If you contact him/her ahead of time and try to figure out if there is a way to make something like this work*, that will be the better way to go. *I can't think of a way carving the coordinates into a stump would ever work and pass review, but then, I am neither a reviewer nor particularly clever, so I can't rule it out
  20. I wouldn't worry about it too much. There was a dark period some months-plus ago where some users got banned and kept showing up with new accounts to stir up trouble with intentionally provocative threads. It raised the sensitivity to the idea of sock puppets around here a fair bit, at least for some. You and your family should feel free to post whatever and whenever, and not concern themselves with how many finds a particular username has.
  21. Really? I normally don't ask for help but I have one that's stumped every puzzler I know I should be clear - I'm no puzzle savant, and if there's an unsolved puzzle out there that has baffled all comers, I'm not bloody likely to be able to read the CO's mind. But, I do like taking a look!
  22. I appreciate the precautions you took and have no issues with your post; I think most people's primary concern is that there not be an inadvertently permanent electronic record of a cache solution, and you've taken pains to avoid that. Furthermore, if you are banging your head against any specific puzzles in the future feel free to PM me - I love the puzzle creating / solving community and am always happy to bat ideas and techniques around.
  23. I'll respectfully disagree. I enjoy the FTF side game but prefer it when there is no marquee. I also feel awkward taking FTF prizes, although my wife has convinced me that leaving them behind might be considered rude to the CO (like refusing a gift or not eating food someone has cooked you). So I've tried to figure out a way to reconcile that and am so far unsuccessful.
  24. I'm glad that the regional forums are segregated, for the reasons that NYPaddleCacher outlines.
