  1. I just started geocashing last week but have been metal detecting since the 70's. Those guys that leave holes behind are killing our hobby and making everybodys life miserable. I plan on using a metal detector but not for finding the cashes. Many of the sites look like a good place to find an old coin or 2 if its on public land and not illegle to use one. When I detect I leave the place better than I found it because I remove all the trash I find and thats concerable. I also do not leave any holes or any sign I was there, which is what any responsible detectorest will do.
  2. Thats what I did about the hint, but it never opened. So I had to cut and past the hint material in Magellans program. I will try you idea of transfering files though, Although I did get the magellan software to work I just clicked on the download LOC Waypoing file and added it to the magellan software page and after I got all I wanted I hit transfer and it worked ok. No Im trying to find a way to input the locations from the 210 back to delorme street atlas without having to manually find each one. It will work with the 210 on com4 but wont transfer files. I think I posted in the wrong section anyway.
  3. I cant use the search because it says I have no permission. I am logged in. I just downloaded GSAK and tried to upload some cashes in the Explorist 210. GSAK only allows me to select Com1 as a communication port. The GPS is USB but shows up as Com4 in Delorme Street Atlas. Anyway it wont communicate through Com1 with GSAK. So I was forced to use the Magellan geocash manager which worked ok although the hint comes up blacked out and when I hit view nothing happens. Does someone know how to use GSAK with the Explorist 210 ? Does someone know how to view the hints in the 210? thanks
  4. This may be old news, However I got a 210 and have Delorme Street Atlas. Everytime I tried to connect the GPS to the laptop or Desktop with Street Atlas I got the error cant open the USB port or something to that effect from Street Atlas. I found that if I selected Garmin w/wpt as the GPS and closed then opened Street Atlas while the GPS was attached I found that I now had in addition to the USB and Com1 port which the laptop and Desktop already had but it added Com4. So I selected Com4 as the communication port and it works, both on the laptop as well as the Desktop. It must be using some kind of serial emulation.
  5. I read all you pointed to. I have a question: Is there any other way to upload a local map to this gps other than buying the mapsend software? I dont think I can use GPSbable for a map. Correct? Sorry for the dumb questions this is the first hand held gps and I have to learn everything as a rank beginner. thank you
  6. Thank you, I never would have found that FAQ without you pointing it out. I did many searches without finding what I needed.
  7. I was searching some unmentionable forms for answers to the question, can I run directmaps on my laptop without the CD. I found the following. The data disk is copy protected with some new copy protection, So good in fact that many newer dvd rom drives wont read it. There is a work around download on the magellan site, but its not guaranteed to work. They know about the problem, but you see the copy protection is necessary to prevent data stealing and to keep the cost of the software down, never mind its the most expensive of the mapping programs for a laptop and you MUST have the cd in to use it. Too bad if you have a laptop without built in CD.

  9. I just found out that if you spend the $$$ for the software you MUST have the original CD in your laptop in order to use it. Unlike Street Atlas and Streets and Trips which you can copy the data to your hard drive. Magellan claim's this keeps the price low by protecting the data. It also appears that some DVD drives will NOT work with this copy protection. This pi55's me off enough to return it and buy something else. I dont have a cd in my laptop so as to keep it small and lightweight. Had I known this I wouldnt have even concidered a Magellan .
  10. I just purchased an Explorist 210. It comes with North American maps showing only the largest roads. Normally I will use Delorme Street Atlas with it on my laptop, however I want to load our local area for the wife to use without the laptop. The map on it is not detailed enough. I see that magellan sells software called MapSend DirectRoute North America, a little pricey for just a local map. I also see there are some MAGELLAN MAPSEND STREETS & DESTINATIONS USA for sale on ebay for a better price. Question: What is the difference between these 2? How detailed are they? Wil streets & dest. work with the 210? Is there any other way to upload a local map to this gps cheaper? thank you Larry
  11. thanks fo the explanation, I never noticed the differece befor.
  12. I never knew cordinets were displayed at different places. How can you tell from a perticular set of cordinets if its by minutes or decemal?
  13. I am totally confused about lat and log errors between different sources. I just started and found 2 cashes Saterday using Delorme Street Atlas and my laptop. So I know that the cashes and Street Atlas Lat and Log must be correct. Now the problem. I have some property on Mt. Riante in Hot Springs Arkensas. So I looked up any cashes that are nearby. There is one listed on Mt. Riante at N 34° 23.793 - W 093° 10.230 although Delorme Street atlas puts it near Trap Mt. Rd. There is no Mountian listed. I went to Street Atlas and did a search for an address that I know is at the top of Mt. Riante, just up the street from my property at 1291 Mount Riante Rd Hot Springs, Arkansas 71913. Street atlas took me right there and I know its correct in the location. Although the Street Atlas map calls it Trap Mt. Even though the road dead ends at the top is Mt. Riante Rd., The people that live there call it Mt Riante as do the real estate people. So I looked at the Lat and Log in Street Atlas and it shows the location at: N 34 deg 24.244 - W 93 deg 07.199 Next I went to USA photo maps and did a go to the same address. Then checked the lat and log. It shows: N 34 deg 40.347 - W 93 deg 12.103 Looking at the Sat map (USA PHOTO) I can see its off though pretty close. I dont expect an address to be right on, the House is at: N 34 deg 40.373 - 93 deg 12.070 Next I checked my House with Street Atlas N 31 deg 33.316 - W 86 deg 11.148 then USA Photo N 31 deg 55.491 - W 86 deg 18.569 The problem is the Street Atlas map and the USA photo map are miles off, both locations. The cash location is miles off both the Street Atlas and USA Photo sat image. What is going on?
  14. Since I dont have my 210 yet, I looked on the Magellan web site to see what map software I could use to upload to it and they list "MapSend DirectRoute North America" I checked Ebay and see a lot of different map send software packages, can some one tell me which ones will work with the Xplorest 210. I dont need a new version maby last years would do. Since I live in the boonies Im wondering how detailed are the road maps I can upload. Will it do county roads? thanks
  15. Thanks for checking. I normally use a gps in the motorhome with laptop and Street Atlas softwere and see no reason to worry about batteries while its hooked up to the laptop for 90% of the time. Last year we traveled from Alabama and through the whole state of New Mexico from the North West to the South East, took 3 weeks, meanwhile I didnt have to worry about turning off the GPS to save the batteries, I just closed the laptop. At least now I can take it from the car with rechargables for foot treaks. It would have been nice to have a portable one for some of the hikes we went on. Like the time I lost my walkey talkie about 1/2 mile up the side of a mountian in Rockhound State Park. I couldnt sleep so I hiked back up the mountian side at 2am with a full moon keying my other walkey talkey while the wife slept in the MH and luckley walked right over it, it was under a bush in a revine. Had it not been so quiet I would never have found it. thanks
  16. Im new to geocashing. I went out Saterday and found 2 withen 2 hours using a laptop, delorme street atlas and their gps unit, but it was the old one with NO waas. I just ordered a 210 from Amazon using their CC discount of $30 total with shipping was $125.95 My question is does the supplied USB cable also power the 210 from the USB port or will I need to get a power adaptor for the car? I read the manual and I assume that it does, but it doesnt say. I live in the boonies of South Alabama but I have a benchmark on my property and another across the street so I can check the accuracy of it which I will post. thank you
