  1. I dont know about the 4000 number mentioned being accurate but on the main page of the Groundspeak forums it list 14,000+ people registered. That is for the board, and they may not all be active geocachers, but I would place the number higher then 4000 active. I pay, dont get to cache much yet, but know that I am thoroughly hooked. I hike anyway, love gadgets, and will someday have the time to get out there and do some caching. To me supporting this site seems only fair for the recreation, including reading the forums, that I get. And $30/year is less then a latte per month.

  3. What pushed me to the Venture was the click stick. It really is handy.

  6. From what I hear on the news the group of four on Mt Rainier were from Germany. Only one of them survived.

  8. quote: ...this particular cache really isn't unique (lots of birthing places, mid-wife places, hospitals, etc. out there!) or interesting (why do I care where some random person I don't even know was born?) to the average geocacher, which is why I think it should be archived. It is of interest to the geocaching community in GEMs area. I cant see it being offensive to anyone. So the worst that happens is someone has fun doing another cache, virtual or not.

  10. Wow, that list was rather frightening...

  12. Too bad. First I had heard of this but just the name had me excited.

  14. I dont see the problem with this cache, or with the majority of virtual/locationless caches I have looked up. I havent done any myself yet but the few I ear-marked to try later seemed fun, and were not armchair caches (able to be done with no GPS, sitting at your computer, which I thought was what people were dreading). If you dont like it, dont do it. But why detract from someone elses fun if it is not adversely affecting you?

  16. I dont see requiring log in as helping much, if at all. If someone is willing to procure a GPS, and then hunt down your cache for the purpose of damaging/pilfering it, would they even slow at the thought of having to log on their bogus account? I log in, I check the coordinates of every cache in my area, and usually enter them into my GPS (now just give me some time off please!). Making log in mandatory to see coordinates will not really affect me personally, but my opinion is that its not much of a deterant.

  18. The shadow below the GPS looks like a parked car. It's darker compared to the other vehicles shadows because it is a shadow on asphalt and grass. The other vehicles lighter shadows are on cement. Just my observations.

  20. The family pic looks good, funnny about the tail. If it wasnt for the extra dog parts I am sure family and friends would have never known.

  22. I carry something similar to the Camelbak style packs(though with a Camelbak water bladder in it), work great for hikes and now caching as well. Plenty of room.
  23. MREs, with the exception of the scrambled egg meal, are quite tasty! Add some rice to any of them and you have a backpack banquet.

  25. I like Powerbars for hikes. Small, compact, hold up well (still good when bent and smashed), and they now taste pretty good. Used to keep a couple in the bottom of the pack as backup, the taste a few years ago insured they would be around for emergency situations.
