  1. I have helped my daughters Junior Girl Scout troop place a cache as part of earning a badge. I think they key is to have an adult or experienced Geocacher place it for them and be the one responsible for maintaining it.
  2. Personally, I am against throwdowns. Maybe it's just me but if I can't find a cache, I don't automatically assume that it's gone missing. Instead I tend to think that that particular cache has gotten the better of me. If I spent a decent time looking for it, I will log it as a DNF and then put it on my watchlist. If someone subsequently finds it after me, then I will sometimes make a second attempt at it. I think the only time a "throwdown" is ok is either if you have contacted the CO and gotten approval or if you have found it in the past and know for certain that it is missing (even then you should probably get the CO's ok first).
  3. Ok, I know some of you Geocaching purists are going to ream me for this one, but I am finding that I am purposefully not caching the last couple weeks of July so I will have plenty of "easy finds" nearby for the "31 Days of Geocaching" this August. I know, I know . . . may the Geocaching Gods strike me down now, but I am actually excited about trying to get all the "31 Days of Geocaching" Souvenirs. I plan to try to get out there every day and not only grab some of the easier ones nearby, but also try to finally snag a few of those elusive ones that have been evading me so far. What about the rest of you? Anyone willing to admit that they're taking it easy these last couple days to better their chances of collecting all 31 souvies?
  4. Actually, I am finding myself doing the opposite. I have been intentionally not caching the final days of July to save them for August. Yes, I know that will sound dumb to some (if not most), but it's a great excuse for actually just being too lazy to go out caching
  5. I agree with some of the other posters that it depends on the type of cache and muggle activity nearby. For me muggle activity is the primary factor. I don't mind spending extra time poking around if there is no one else around to call the cops on me If I just have time for a cursory look and don't really give it a good look, then I usually don't DNF it. I'll only DNF it when I think I have given it a fair chance. Also, if I try to find one and can't, I'll add it to my watchlist so I am notified when others find it. Sometimes just knowing that someone else just found it will motivate me to try again.
  6. I cache both with my 11 year old daughter and without her. After she had gone along with me a few times, she requested her own GC account. Although she loves finding those larger caches with great swag items and signing the physical logs, she isn't very fond of going online and logging her finds. Initially, she was pretty good about logging her finds online, but not so much anymore. So, when she does cache with me I let her sign the physical logs for both of us and I do the online logging. It's a great way to keep her interested and keep her statistics accurate.
  7. Although I agree that 31 separate souvenirs is overkill, the “31 Days of Geocaching” does have me excited and I am going to try to see how many I can get. I would also prefer a calendar style page souvie with the days that I find a cache being colored in. For those of us who aren’t hard core ‘cachers and haven’t completed an impressively long streak, this is also a way to try to see if we can accomplish a “mini-streak”.
  8. I've come across a couple puzzle caches that use wordles. Has anyone come across anything similar? If so, I would appreciate some assistance in getting started. I'm not looking for someone to solve it for me, but maybe a little guidance on approaches in solving puzzle caches that use wordles. Thanks!
  9. I recently got the KangaTek Sling pack in black. It is just the right size for me. It has 4 zippered pockets in which I keep the following: - iPhone or GPS - pens, pencils, extra logs - trade items - tools of the trade (tweezers, extendable magnet, swiss army knife, smal flashlight) I also have a Travel Bug patch that I have sewn to the front to make it "official".

  11. I like the little plastic men. Seems to be one in nearly half the caches I find. I also like carabiners or anything unique. I have a large glass jar on my desk that I dump all the swag I snag into so I can look at it while I toil through my workday. I bought some of those wooden coins and have personalized them and usually leave one of those in exchange. We also periodically clean out my daughters rooms and inevitably add some stuff to our swag supply for trading.
  12. Some great info here. I recently placed a cache (my second). I found the perfect spot and enabled my cache to be published. I then received notification that I was too close to a PMO cache. Unfortunately when I was doing my checking, I was using my iPhone app; which doesn't show PMO caches in my "Find Nearby Geocaches" (I guess because I am not a Premium Member). The info above as well as the "Checking for Cache Saturation" help article would have saved me pain of having to relocate my cache. Thanks again for the info!
  13. Thanks, that answered a question I had. I just got a TB Patch that I am going to sew onto my Geocaching bag and have it 'visit' the geocaches I find, so I'll be sure to keep it in my Inventory to allow me to do that. I suppose that will then allow folks to mistakenly 'grab' it, but I guess if that happens, I can just 'grab' it back.
  14. I recently placed my first couple of caches as well. I used my iPhone to get the coordinates as I was placing the caches, but then went online and used Google Maps to verify. I actually tweaked them slightly based on Google Maps and now they appear to be spot on.

    Question

THat's what I do with my daughter. We pretty much always cache together. When we find a TB, we take turns who "takes" it and who "discovers" it. Either way we each get the TB added to our profile.
  16. I think it's a valid question Personally, if I was in that position, I would want to pass them on to someone who enjoys Geocaching as much as I do. I would probably make plans to 'gift' them and then let that person adopt them; kind of like any item left in a will. Just my two cents. By the way if you're looking for someont to 'gift' them to, I would take very good care of them
  17. I have been using the official Geocaching app on my iPhone for a while now and have a question regarding what is displayed on the cache page. When I pull up a cache on the app, there is a grey bar under the coordinates that looks to be split into 3 sections. (in the list view of caches, the 3-sectioned bar appears right under the cache title) When I have logged a cache as 'found' the middle section turns green and the word "Found" appears there. Anyone know what the left and right sections are intended for / what to the track? I though maybe "FTF", but that's not it.
