  1. Just one more question, though. I see in the software which installs the .img file, there is also an uninstal button. I have tested the facility with some small test files that I now wnat to remove. But when I use this, I get a message saying that the files cannot be removed. Any tips on this, or do I just live with it?
  2. Thanks very much, it certainly is. Looks like I had half the story. Now at least I can see the map! Excellent.
  3. I was looking for something here also. I found a load of .img files on a Maps of Mexico for gps site and downloaded several to joining into the map of a specific state. Finding this software looked like an answer to my prayer, but I don't seem to get it to work. I've joined 4 tiles (each of 1 degree Long an Lat_ into a single file, but I can't get Basecamp to recognise either it or the individual img files. I suspect there is something else I either need or need to do.. Can anyone help me here?
  4. OK that's fine, many thanks. It was just that in the User Manual the only choice described is WAAS. I hoped it would be an inclusive option. It's not the most explicit manual is it? I guess it will be trial and error once I actually get the kit.
  5. I'm getting a Garmin Oregon 550T, and would obviously like to get the best fix on a location. From my reading, WAAS in the US helps this, but here in Europe, there is EGNOS. As the Orgeon User manual doesn't seem to recognise this as an option, can actually take advantage of EGNOS? and if so would you do that through the WAAS menu selection in System setup? Apologies if this seems rather basic, but I'm upgrading from the very original eTrex! Quiet a lot more to learn......
  6. This comparison is one that I am also making, as a replacement for my first generation eTrex. One major difference is the screen, even the eTrex 30 is only 176x220 while the Oregon 450 ( or otherwise) is 240 x 400. For map viewing that would seem to be a significant difference. Otherwsie, the eTrex has what should be a better receiver of signals. Both take mapping and microSD cards. I never reach the waypoint limit anyway and doubt that I would. So, as the price differences at the moment at least (eTrex 30 prices are list or close to since its a new device)are not huge, is there any other reason to go for the eTrex 30?
  7. Thanks, I have downloaded to my PC Garmin BaseCamp and the Mexico map from the gpsfiledepot. Its not bad as viewed on my laptop, but still missing a lot of deatil, including roads, let alone lower classification roads. So a possible......the trouble is that I don't like the idea of buying any of the Garmin products without having seen a proper preview like this site offers - and I don't mean the selected views on the Garmin web sites. Anyone with Garmin Mexico map experience??
  8. I've an original Garmin eTrex, which has done me well for many years. More recently I have been travelling in Mexico, and now want to move up to a more sensitive receiver (long overdue!), and a handheld that has decent topographical maps. I go exploring for cactus plants, and so both roads and topo features are needed. Obviously I'd like the best level of detail I can get. I've taken a look at the Garmin websites, and also the Delorme. I think that the new eTrex 30 or the PN-60 appear to have all the features I need, but then it will come down to the maps. I am genuinely confused here. Basemaps are all very well, but in both systems the North American topo ones leave a lot to be desired when it comes to Mexico. Great for domestic USA and most of Canada, but not Mexico. So I guess i'm heading towards dfinding maps elsewhere, or customising other topo maps, and that is where I get lost. I'm computer literate, so am not afraid of doing conversion of whatever. Advice would be very gratefully received......on either system. Cost is a factor, but not the over-riding one.
