  6. Bravo Zzzoey! I just looked at your Painted Hills page and it's mighty purty indeed. Good Job! I'll be over there huntin' that sucker just as soon as you folks warm up that dry-side weather so I don't freeze my arse off whilst camping. I see you've got Barney trained to snag the fossils for you. 7. While poking around the state cache map for Oregon recently I stumbled accross this cache and its nearby cousin. By the waypoint numbers and the URLs it looks like they're among the oldest caches ever placed. Oddly the profile link takes you to Jeremy Irish's profile, not Jerry Connelly. At the time I thought perhaps Jerry Connelly was just a nickname that Jeremy used early on, or another explanation might be that Jeremy adopted these caches at some point. Then tonight I stumbled accross this cache. Now I'm really confused because clicking on Jerry Connelly's profile from that cache page takes you to a guy in Virginia who has only one find out of 200 that's anywhere west of the Mississippi! So can anyone shed some light on this little mystery? Who was that masked man? To Jerry's credit all three of these pioneer caches appear to be in interesting places and have survived unscathed for nearly three years now. Just thought it was interesting. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message has been edited to fit your TV screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  9. Zzzoey wrote: quote: So would reputable cachers be interested in hunting virtuals in the Painted Hills or in the shadow of Sheep Rock? Please let us know what you think... I'll chase your virts in them thar Painted Hills! I must admit though that I'm a little bummed, because I already had my eye on placing a cache there as it's one of my favorite places in the whole state. When I checked the state map a while back I couldn't believe there wasn't at least a virt there already. But alas I am a Wetsider and those are really your stomping grounds Zzzoey so cache on! FWIW, as far as the approval issue I had three plans in mind for creating a cache there: Plan A) First try to get permission from the ranger in charge to place a container. I know that may not be possible but you never know until you try. Ask them for input on appropriate locations for a cache away from sensitive areas, even offer to meet with a ranger and have him/her show you possible hiding spots. If they've got a say in where it goes they may be more amenable to the idea. It may wind up being a micro in the parking lot but so what? You can still make it a multi where the hunter has to gather information that can only be found out on the trails. If you are able to get permission for a physical cache you should have no problem getting it approved despite the fact that it's in a National Monument. At least that's what I was told through email discussions with one of the approvers and that discussion was specifically about the Painted Hills. Plan Make it a multi where information must be gathered within the Painted Hills NM but the physical cache is a mile or two away on BLM land. This may or may not be easy, I'm not familiar enough with the immediate area to say but it's worth a try. Plan C) If all else fails roll the dice and make it an interesting virt. In their defense I gotta say the few virts I've done have been far more interesting than some of the tupperware I've found so I'm a little perplexed as to why they've gotten such a bad rap. Be that as it may, if you let Seth! or Moun10bike know that you TRIED to place a container I can't see why they'd have a problem signing off on a virt in the Painted Hills. Just send them a picture. That'll prove it ain't no lame virtual! Good luck! Congratulations on the camera by the way, looks like a great one. sparklehorse --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message has been edited to fit your TV screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  13. I'd email the owner first. Looks like there was a micro there at one time, there's even a picture of it with the first log. Who knows if it's still there or not, nobody seems to care. Too funny. 14. Can some of you PDX folks please share with me where you get your ammo cans? Usually I use the better quality Rubbermaids but I'm working on placing a cache that really needs the extra weight and durability of an ammo can. Thanks! sparklehorse --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message has been edited to fit your TV screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  15. Check out this thread where Jeremy mentions Rhino games. Some of you have mentioned that Rhinos come with "games". I haven't actually had my mits on a Rhino yet so I'm not sure if that means mini versions of video games or something else entirely. Like I would think that Rhinos have great potential for event type, multi-player games. A "find the moving target" game could be played in areas that have a complex maze of trails. Or you could have a flag or other object that one team is trying to prevent another team from capturing. Sort of like paintball except instead of paint geocachers could fling McToys at each other. "Hey Seth! I hit you with a plastic dinosaur man, you're out!" Not exactly geocaching but it sounds like fun. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message has been edited to fit your TV screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  18. I love bushwhacking through bees' nests to find tupperware....No wait....I love slogging down a muddy trail in the pouring rain to find an ammo can....No wait....I love lurking in city parks looking for coordinates written on playground equipment....No wait....I love hacking through blackberry bushes because I took the wrong trail....No wait. Hmmmmm. I think I just love the fact that all of this is even possible. We truly live in interesting times. sparklehorse --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message has been edited to fit your TV screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  19. I've seen some of the coverage on the news here too, and it does look just nasty. Didn't you experience a similar situation last year? Bad times. 21. I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but I say if you feel that strongly about it go ahead and post the "cache should be archived" note. He probably won't archive it but at least it will be a serious heads up to anyone contemplating hunting it in the future and just maybe he'll add a fair warning to the cache page. I've placed several caches in areas that involve a certain amount of risk but I always try to be upfront about what's involved on the cache page so that people can make an informed decision about hunting them. There are lots of caches out there that are extremely dangerous and I think that's perfectly OK, "let the buyer beware" as it were as long as people know what it is that's for sale. On the cache page in question though I see no mention of the hazards involved. Assuming they're as serious as you say that really isn't fair to the hunter, who may be out there wandering around on that road at night not knowing what they're looking for or how busy the road is all while being distracted by their GPS. If the cache owner updates the page with a fair warning then I think it's fine, sounds like a clever hide. sparklehorse --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message has been edited to fit your TV screen. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- [This message was edited by sparklehorse on January 21, 2003 at 04:23 AM.]
  22. quote: I'm not really one to perpetuate rumors of legends or anything, but i'm pretty sure he still finds caches. I swear i saw his truck at Bryant's Cache in Lake Oz a few months ago. Perhaps he's really just working on his next cache: "Find joedohn" A sort of "missing persons - reverse - locationless - virtual - riddle - multi waypoint - puzzle - poem - unsolved mystery - conundrum" cache. HEY JOEDOHN, we're on to you mister! Or perhaps he's being blackmailed by Dr.Isotope who intends to use joedohn's archived caches for his own nefarious purposes...CRIKEY! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message has been edited to fit your TV screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  24. Recently I noticed that every single one of joedohn's caches has been archived. Bad times. I've only found a couple of his but they were great caches and I was looking forward to hunting many more. I tried emailing him when he archived one that I had found to see what the deal was but never heard back from him. Moved out of the area perhaps? Bummer if true, he seemed to be one of the better cache hiders in the state. Are you out there joedohn? --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message has been edited to fit your TV screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
