  1. The cat's out the bag I hope to place one soon and have been working on a permissive path with the landowners for 5 months. It would have been Bristol's only Letterbox Hybrid but someone got in before me Hopefully no BRISTOL cachers reading this will gazump me !
  2. I'm selling camo bags on e-bay, same username. They start at £2.49 + P&P.
  3. Dare I say it - could the problem be cache not cacher saturation ? Should new members be welcomed but a limit set on the number of active caches anyone can have?(assuming there isn't one already) Are people trying hard enough to make caches that inform, entertain or take you somewhere special ? For sure some people are, I've found some fantastic caches recently but then again I've found a whole load that seem to have been laid way too hastely will no real point. If you could only place 5 wouldn't you make them the best you could ?
  4. If anyone's interested I've drawstring camo bags for sale on ebay, same user name. They start at £2.49 + P&P.
  5. Hey, just a figure of speech guys ! I've got my mind set on a cache in an area with a lot of generally unknown history, inspired by Percy's Bunker. I've a fair few months of research and GPS practice before that has any chance of turning into reality and by then I hope to have found a darn sight more caches. It seems to me that the best caches would take you somewhere you'd never know existed and teach you something about your surroundings.
  6. As a newbie myself all I wanted someone to tell me was what to go out and buy so that I could get started straight away, there's just too many options and too few shops where you cango and get face to face advice. So with that said... I bought a Holux GPSlim to go with my existing Bluetooth iPAQ and it's fantastic. I'm sure everyone has different requirements and different views but this hardware alongside memory-map (to avoid walking off the cliffs) and Navigator II to do the final searching seem to be doing me well. The receiver works in most parts of the house (why I'd need it there I don't know) and operates fine from the glovebox of my car. I suspect there are better software options but for around a tenner Navigator II and a keen pair of eyeballs makes for a good start. The biggest problem I had was understanding how it all worked together with so few instructions provided but trial and error always works in the end. If you're in the same position I was then canvas opinion in the forums or even try dropping a mail to some successful cachers.
  7. Well one thing I'm sure of, there's a big community out there ! Thanks for all the pointers, there looks to be a lot more on-line than I'd first imagined - I'm one of those misers that uses an old dial-up, quickly. I'm already thinking about flooding the Bristol area with my own caches and now I'm determined that the first cache I place will have a stamp in it. Cheers and Happy Hunting !
  8. Thanks guys, I wasn't expecting such a quick response. Maybe someone should point out that geocaching may have started in the US but letterboxing started the concept here back in 1854 !
  9. I've only 6 or so finds to my name as I only found out about the sport last month and had to save up the hard earned cash for a GPS so ignor my ignorance. This seems like an up-to-date version of a sport that was popular in Dartmoor called Letterboxing. There you joined a club which got you a box of map references, bearings and clues and you went out on the moors in search of a cache containing a rubber stamp and a logbook. You stamped the logbook to say you'd found it and stamped your own book as a record. When you had enough different stamps (all personallised) you could apply for another book of clues and so on. I may be missing something with geo-caching but wouldn't it be good if you had a similar record of your visits ? Collecting a permenant record of each visit that's a bit more interesting than a number next to your username or a list on a website ? Likewise if you owned a cache it would make for a brighter logbook. Don't get me wrong - I'm loving it !
  10. Excellent, I'd kind of settled on the GPSlim236 so it looks like I wasn't far off the mark. Any good tips on software to go with it ? I was heading for VITO Navigator II based on a magazine review and having already blown my budget. I figure I can add street navigation and the like later. Is there anything else I need in terms of hardware/software as a beginner ??
  11. I'm real new to this so give me a chance ! - We came across this brilliant sport by accident and after finding two local caches the hard way want to take it seriously. I've got a bluetooth iPAQ already and a good clue on appropriate software but the range of receivers is too much for me. Can anyone offer advice on a good budget receiver and UK supplier ? I've spent three nights searching the net and ended up with too much information to make any sense. All the sirf III units sound great but can I get similar performance for less that £50 ?
