  1. Groundhog123, I use UPM religiously for caching. I just started a topic concerning Terrafetcher called "Is Terrafetcher still working?" I haven't had any replies to it yet. Using Terrafetcher along with UPM I can download topo and aerial photos by county, which I perfer for house keeping purposes. As of today, Terrafetcher goes through the download process, but no files are found in the destination folder. I wonder if this has to do with the topic of this discussion.
  2. After using Terrafetcher successfully a little over a year ago to download county map data for USAPhotoMaps, I tried again today and am not getting any files. There is definately internet and hard disk activity, but the destination folder is empty at the end of the download. The only strange things I have noticed are a number of errors equal to the number of tiles in the Processing Stats portion of the download window, and "Show Tiles" is checked but no tiles are shown during download. I tried this on 2 computers with settings the same as my last successful downloads. Is anyone else having a problem? Thanks
  3. Problem solved. It was the way I built the waypoint name in my last GPX export. I had it set to drop the GC prefix from the waypoint code and some other goodies to manipulate child waypoint codes. This reeks havoc when the macro exports the codes to all.gpx and then comes back to try to find them in the database. If anyone has this problem, make sure you use %code in the waypoint name in the export window of your last export. The macro worked fine after I figured that out. Thanks for the mac.
  4. Has anyone used this macro with GSAK version 7.0.1? I just tried and failed. Out of 55 waypoints, it only updated userdata2 for the first selected cache in the database, and the county was wrong. I also noticed that the site I got the file gpsbabel-arc-counties.zip from also had a file called gpsbabel-arc-states.zip. I didn't see any mention of it in the macro instructions. I downloaded it but don't know what to do with it. Could that be the problem?
  5. Using a combination of USAPhotoMaps and Terrafetcher, I have found it easier to plan a day of caching by county. Using Terrafetcher I can download maps of an entire county, load a particular county into UPM and select my area of interest. However, running a PQ based on a radius from zip code or lat/lon may give me several caches in adjacent counties, which I have to move into waypoint and GSAK files for those adjacent counties. Would it be possible to add a county attribute along with all the other's when posting a new cache? Thanks, Dan and Taya
  6. Ha, I'm not a race fan either. I've seen it once during my several years living in Indy, 3 of which were in Eagledale right off the 3rd turn of the track. Ya seen one, ya seen em all. Got a stiff neck from turning my head from right to left and back. It used to erk me when the police would restrict parking on my side of the street in front of my own house. I haven't been caching long either, but having a ball doing it. You should check out the caches at Southeastway Park. It's a nice area, usually not many people during the week. Summer will bring out the weekend soccer teams, though. Then again, I haven't been there for nine years. I've found 5 TB's here, hoping to grab some this weekend to move them to Indy.
  7. No race, just dealing with rental property I own on the southeast side. I've got 9 caches to check out at Southeastway park where I used to take my previous puppy for his romps before I transplanted myself in Northern VA. I doubt if I will even put a dent in the 400 caches in my PQ. The tough part is finding a TB here to take it there without reading every cache post.
  8. I'm planning a trip to Indy the end of May and have several caches to visit there. If anyone has a tb in a cache within a 30 mile radius of the 22193 zip code and wants it to move west, let me know.
  9. Hey folks, I'm located in Dale City, Prince William County, VA. Got into this game in hopes of taking my Springer Spaniel with me. (Aquired the neighbor's 11 year old grandson as a side kick). I have plenty of caches to find around this area, but none where I can let my Springer off-leash safely. Springers don't have fun on a leash (neither does his owner) and there's nothing more sorrowfull than the look on a Springer's face when you tell him he can't go. I'm looking for caches in an area away from traffic, horses and "dog cops" where the puppy can run and the boy any myself can search. The Springer wouldn't hurt a fly, he just likes to meet other people and dogs. Then he gets back to his mission, which must be running since that's what he does best. If anyone has any caches hidden in such an area, please let me know. Dan and Taya
  10. Using GPXSonar, how can I either label a cache as "found" or, preferably, delete it on the IPAQ? Oops, it's an HX2495.
  11. Thanks folks for the help. Sorry about the confusion. The GPSr is a Vista C. The "areas" I was talking about are in the screen when you use the "find" function. I'll call them folders from now on. Five folders in my find screen including Geocache. It was just a matter of using GSAK to download instead of USAPhotoMaps. Problem solved.
  12. Those of you who own an Etrex Vista know that it has a seperate "area" for geocaching waypoints. How do I get them into that "area" using' GSAK instead of them going into the "waypoints" area? Is there a better term for "area"?
  13. Shiver me timbers, me and the parrot thank ye Cap'n Pasha. Aaaaarrrrgggg. I be noticin a minor drawback of photomaps. The scurvy dog downloads me waypoints to the waypoints area of me etrex. I be reckonin to get em to the geocache area, I be havin to use GSAK. Aaaarrrrggg. I'll be settin sail for that test shortly. Whar's me daily ration of grog? How do ye fit 15 men on a dead man's chest? Aaaaaarrrrrgggg.
  14. Ok, so I got Google Earth to work, but only "opened" the file from GC accounts page. Next time I went to Google Earth, all the GC stuff was gone. Do I need to "save" the download file from GC? If so, where? Or do I need to tell Google to save my temp locations? Right now I'm having better luck using USAPhotoMaps. I can do a multi-download of GC .LOC files, rename them with a .gpx extension, look at them on topo or aerial photos, and download to the gpsr. All in one application. Might not have all the data that comes with the GC .gpx files, but I'm getting eager to do my first hunt. Guess it's time to just jump in and see what happens and learn by experience.
  15. 1. Is there a way to download multiple .gpx files from the "find page" instead of going to each cache page to select that function? Clicking the download button on the "find page" only gives me .loc files 2. Where/how do I download .kml files?
  16. Jester, That was a very helpful post. I'll keep in touch.
  17. Keep it coming, folks. dadgum land surveyors are notorious for spending more time researching a project than the time it takes in the field. I guess I'm overwhelmed at the interaction of GC, Google Earth, GPSr applications, pocket pc applications, and the mechanics of how to make them work together.

    Pid?

Not sure how to do a quote in here yet, but Airmapper is right. I didn't wan't to go into a "Survey 101" lesson. I found many NGS stations in my search that were "scaled". The data sheet will give you the approximate angular accruacy of the scaled coords. I was seeing 6 seconds. That's about 600 feet of latitude. Rule of thumb is 1 second of lat=101 sea level feet. The longitude distance varies depending on the latitude.
  19. Will the HP iPAQ rx1955 work with GC's pocket query function?

    Pid?

If you are looking for benchmarks in your area that aren't in the GC.com database or for a particular one and don't know the pid, try this link: www.ngs.noaa.gov. I was just looking for the closest control station to check the accuracy of my gps'r. Found one less than a mile from my house. Checked the pid with GC and it was there. Doesn't mean they will all be there, though.
  21. Thanks folks for your input. I've made my purchase. If the forum moderator deems necessary, this topic can be closed.
  22. What is anyone's opinion/experience with a Garmin Etrex Legend C and Etrex Vista C?
  23. I guess my puppy and I are as new to this game as anyone could be and I'm looking at a Garmin Etrex Legend C, simply because I have enough rebates and reward points at a particular store to get it for free. I've seen 2 posts in this topic from people who have them. Haven't seen any con's about them. Are there any con's I might need to know about before I waste my bonus bucks?
  24. It worked. Tadpole must be the forum Genie's name for someone who just got interested in caching and doesn't event have a gps unit yet. It's appropriate, but, how did it know?
