  1. Anyone know of a type of windbreaker, or jacket that doesn't rip when you hike through the thorns, or whatever is out there? The guys at Dick Sporting goods were like, duh, don't go where you're not supposed to go, and our coat won't rip. Which, I didn't appreciate at all. Cause, geocahing sometimes requires it. --Rhonlynn

  3. Visuvius: I was very upset when I took my 11 year old out, a ocuple of weeks ago, down a trail that we're very familior with, close to my house. I had no idea what I was looking for. I had a new Garmin Legend, which I love. I let it lead me clear through mud and junk, down an old creek, till, guess what? The map read 0.0 feet, but I couldn't find it. I went home, got mad, and emailed the person who hid it. He emailed me back, and it was right where I thought is was, but didn't have any working gloves to open it. It happened to be in a trash bag between two trees. I haven't been able to go back to the site cause it's been rainging in torrents! I don't happen to enjoy muddy hikes if I can avoid it. Anyway, the next one, I went right to it, the GPS read 0.0. It was easy. It was pretty cool finding it, too. The third, the other day, we looked for over two hours for it, and never did find it. I found out yesterday, tht it'd been moved 1471 feet away. It rain too much yesterday to go back to look for it. Well, I know this didn't help much, but, I just wanted to know you're not alone. Don't dispair or quit the sport....(I ought to hide one in the Boy Scout camp, they'd have fun with it. Or, maybe, in the vacant woods near my home down the sledding hill. But hiding it in the sewer, for whoever mentioned it, is funny). --Rhonda Straw
  4. I think you have to have the Garmin software...it's about 80.00 at GPSDISCOUNT.com, also, shell out 14.95 for the case, or it will get all scratched up...and the case is WORTH it! Anyway, you should be able to set it to route, and start at your waypoint, which might be set, maybe at your home. Be sure to use the icon for the home, cause you can see it better. Then, go into the Main menu with your page button on the side. Now, go down to the Route screen, and it should start a route to wherever you stop. My son and I do this frequently when we walk, he's 11 and think it's cool to make routes to his friends houses. Dopn't forget to delete the route when you're finished. The etrax Legend can only hold about 25 routes. Hope it helped. You know what I found? It doesn't hurt to play with the machine a little, even if you run down the batteries the first twenty hours. I now found out why the vista costs so much more-more memory. --Rhonlynn

  6. It takes about three seconds, or less, and to download the whole page takes about 3 seconds. I have a 56k modem. From the ocmputer to your machine, it takes about 1-2 minutes, it depends on what you're downloading, that's for the maps. it downloads wayppoints in less than a second, and that's several at once. How much memory does the Vista have in it? How much did you pay for it? I paid 249.99 for the Etrax Legend, and it has 8 megs of memory. --Rhonlynn
  7. 1. Do you guys tend to loose your downloaded maps when you change your batteries in your Etrax Legends? 2. Why is ittoday when I was out looking for the geocache, that my waypoint, when it got on 1 foot, I'd turn, and it'd be on 12 foot, then 3 foot at the next turn? I was standing, practicaly in one place, and my Satellite reception was within a 15 foot accuracy. I have WAAS enabled, but there were some trees. Do Caches sometimes get moved by people? I never did reach 0.0 on my Etrax, and I never found it. Twice, I've reached 0.0, and I ofund the Cache...the first time I did it, though, I had no idea what I was looking for, and didn't realize it'd be hid in a trash bag. haha...But, it lead me right to it. Today, no such luck. Why is that? --Rhonda

  9. My Legend cost 249.00, and the software was from GPS Discount.com. A Little cheaper, then you go to the Garmin.com website (or the store in Olathe) and update it for free.I've had mine for about 3 weeks, so far, I've had luck finding an easy cache, but two more diffictuls ones, well...I think that has to do with no Cache skills yet. I'm just starting on this. The battereis last for about 19 hours. I buy tons of AA batteries, cause of Gameboy Advance and gameboy color. I don't ever run out of AA batts. --Rhonda
  10. Can we add a travel bug to any Cache we find, even if it's not one we hid. That'd be fun, if we can do that? Like, leave a travel bug as a momento? --Rhonda Straw
  11. I just wanted some opinions. I'm female, and a nurse, and know the majority of the trails around here, where quite often these are hidden. I found my first Geocache today, alone. I'm a nurse, and my off days are often two in a row in the middle of the week, then I'm working for a few days. I don't know anyone who has the days off I do, so I went alone today, and found it, without much trouble. It was really fun.
  12. Does anyone hunt for Geocaches alone? If you know where you're going...That is...
  13. I ordered the free stamp, and had the Where's George slogan put on it. Pretty cool. I'm learning alot from you guys.--Rhonda Originally posted by BassoonPilot: Where's George dollars. Travel bugs. Where's George dollars. Trinkets or knick knacks. Where's George dollars. State quarters or interesting foreign coins/tokens. Did I mention the Where's George dollars?

  15. Hey, lewsie...I'd get rid of Country Music CD's, too. I'd hate to think that I'd have any of those things in my possession. hahahaha!!!!! (major Rock and Roll listener here)...Rhonlynn

  17. What kind of stuff do you guys leave?
  18. I have a Where's George dollar bill. I really wish I could stamp all of my dollar bills with it, but they don't sell the stamp on Where's George? anymore. Does anyone know a website that has inexpensive custom made stamps? I've learned alot, and told my son that we can't take everything, but only one thing, or maybe none. I drove over to the site a few minutes ago. It's raining in hordes right now, so it's not a good idea to find it tonight. But tomorrow night, we're planning on it, and I can't wait. I don't care what's in it, it's fun.

  20. Here's a few questions: (I'm about to go out to hunt for my first geocache, near my home, when it quits raining). 1. When you find the cache, and find what's hidden in it, are you to take eveything that's in it, or just a couple of items? ofcourse, leaving the equal of whatever you take, which my son and I plan to do. What about leaving money? Do poeple leave money? It'd be kind of fun for the next person, even if it's only one or two dollars, plus some other items. 2. Can you hide them on vacant lots? What if it's a lot that's been vacant for over 40 years? I know this cause I live near the lot, and it'd be an excellent place to hide something. Also, the parking's good. 3. My dad lives at the Lake of the Ozarks. There's billions of places, easy or not so easy that a geocache could be hidden. Preferrably, I'd choose to hide it in an easy spot. What if you can't always be available to monitor it? I live in Kansas City, and get down to the Lake, about every couple of months. It'd be fun to hide a few down there, not at Ha Ha Tonka, but in the forrest. The parkin'gs pretty good, park on the side of the Lake Road. The business it'd be near would appreciate the business. What if you can't always monitor the hidden geocach?

  22. I'm brand new to this, someone in Boy scouts told me about it mOnday, and I went to dick's Sporting goods after reading up here, and all over the internet. I have an E-trax Legend, and I was sold on it after the first 24 hours. Amazing what it can do! I work over in Kansas, and it knew my exact location. I drive twenty miles, and it tracked my drive correctly. I have an 11 year old, and now, I can actually see my walking or jogging speed, and know where I am, not that I didn't, but it's cooler now. I can go to Branson with a city map! I can find hotels and exits easliy. I think I can park away from Kemper Arena in Kansas Cioty,a nd track my stepes, and find my car, or at Arrowhead Stadium. I can even find the Garmin Dealer cause they're in Olathe, near the Mall of the Great Plains. It has a small calendar, you can insert notes. The battery change is simple, you don't have to pry them out, like in my dumb Handspring Viser. You don't loose any information when changing the batteries, as opposed to the Handspring Viser, which was tHE Dumbest thing I've every bought. If I knew about GPS a few months ago, I would've bought this instead. The software you can buy is awesome, but it's expensive, but it's cool. I'm going to find my first Cache tomorrow, I'm only a few blocks from it. I pretty much know the exact location of it.
