  1. This happened to me the other day and I saw two snakes! Thankfully, they saw me first and got away from me.
  2. As a relative newbie, there are a few items that I seem to forget regularly prior to Geocaching. Do any of these sound familiar to you? 1. Setting waypoints! While we have yet to get lost, there have been a few times that we have spent more time than necessary trying to remember our way back. 2. Keeping my pen in my pocket instead of my backpack. This is only annoying once, as I remember to do so after the first time I remove my pack. 3. Spray my neck with mosquito repellant. I remember my arms (and legs if in shorts), but I often forget my neck area...I am quickly reminded! 4. Read logs and hints carefully. Only after I have searched and searched do I refer back to log notes and hints. Usually, I see something that would have helped me find the cache much sooner had I paid better attention the first time. Are any of these familiar to you? What are some others?
  3. I purchased one of these today for the same reason you mentioned. Thanks for the reply.
  4. Thanks for all of the replies. This will help a lot.
  5. On the homepage of geocaching.com, click on the tab at the top of the page "play". In the drop down menu, choose "Hide and seek a cache". You will then be taken to another page which will allow you to enter "by address", "by postal code", "by state/province"...etc. If you choose the selection "by address" or "by postal code", you can also enter a radius of how far away you'd like caches listed. Once you enter the address, or postal code, enter your radius and then press go. I hope this helps.
  6. Recently, we have started participating in some of the Georgia State Park "Geochallenge" hunts. During our first hunt, we spent a fair amount of time hiking throughout the forest. Though our State Park sponsored cache was located fairly easily, the others we chose to find were a bit more difficult and required much more walking/hiking. For our trip, we packed (in a backpack) water, our "cache stash/swag", granola bars, a first aid kit, insect repellent, a pocket knife, a cell phone, camera, and a pen. Since we also carried our dogs with us, we took a few treats and a small water bowl for them. Of course we also carried a GPS too. Since we are new to this great hobby, I'm interested to know what you take along on your trips. We are planning a hunt at Crooked River State Park this weekend, so anything you suggest may help make our trip more enjoyable. Thanks in advance! Sonny
  7. Tadpole, Once you click on the link of a cache that you've decided to find at geocaching.com, you can find out the size of the cache on the top of the page to the right of "difficulty"...see "Size". Typically, you will only find a log in "micro" and "small". Larger types of caches usually contain items to "swap". You may also wish to scroll to the bottom of the page and read the recent logs of those who have previously found the cache. Many will leave comments pertaining to what you can expect. You may also choose to click on the link "view logbook". It is located near the middle of the page.
  8. Hello BMO, My family and I are also new to Geocaching. After reviewing quite a few GPS devices, we chose the Magellan eXplorist GC. I think I paid about $135.00 US dollars (Amazon.com) for it and it has served us well. Since it is marketed as being "100% Dedicated to Geocaching Adventures", I spent some time reading about the preloaded features to decide if it had everything I needed. The "reviews" section on Amazon was extremely helpful in aiding my decision. While I'm sure there are many more advanced, complex models to choose from, we have had no complaints yet. It has lead us right to the spot (within 5-10 feet) and we've located 8-9 caches thus far. With the purchase of this unit, you also get a 30-day premium membership to this website...not bad. I hope this helps. sonandk02 and our son, JDAWG.
  9. Thank you for the quick reply. The coin I found is a ceramic poker chip with a fellow geocacher's name and logo on it. Since it was without instructions, I emailed him to ask what he'd like done with it, but I've yet to receive a reply. Thanks again.
  10. Hello, I'm a newbie to Geocaching and I must admit that I am hooked! I find this to be a great way to spend quality family time, as well as possibly making new friends all around the world. Recently I found a token in my second Geocache. Is this for me to keep, or should I place it in another cache that I find? Thanks for your reply.
