  1. I use Duracel NiMh rechargeables,I measured them against Duracel alkalines with a micrometer and they are both equal.I agree I dont think there is a standard size AA.But obviously some brands are too long.
  2. The Garmin one has a 90 degree on it,what do you mean by 180 degree ,it swivels around or its straight? A 90 might be better for a pocket or pack, probably the first inch of the wire coming out of the connector will most likelybe pretty stiff from either heat shrink or some kind of strain relief for the cable so it wont bend real sharp and get damaged, unless forced.
  3. Once again Garmin software sucks,if they get any worse they can work for Microsoft!!!
  4. I tried to use Topo 2008 in Hawaii, last fall for road navigation, forget it ! get to a road junction and it would show me way off in the boonies somewhere.
  5. If you have it set to record a track log and it losses its sat. fix I believe it just draws a straight line to the next point ,once it regains a sat.fix.Like I said mine cost $35.00,so thats say 5 Big Mac meals or a couple of cases of beer,so its no big deal to me,so I got it and it can make a differance and since the new models dont work worth **** as far as I am concerned ,its not like I am going to upgrade any time soon and wont have a use for it.Hey Strider I got mine from GPS Central a mail order place in Calgary, check it out.Got all my stuff from them.
  6. I have the Garmin 25 MCX for my 76 csx,it cost $35.00.It does make a noticable differance at any time in sattelite signal strenght, true most of the time you dont need it.However I have noticed that when hiking in the mountain forests if I hold my unit by my side ,below my waist while walking ,it can lose sattelite reception, and if I stick it in my pack while recording a track log ,I also may lose reception.Plug in the anntena and I dont need to worry about either, just stick it to the washer I glued on one of those name tag holders,(its magnetic) and clip it to the upper part of my pack. Its nice to have ,but I dont actually use it much,I am old school, paper map and compass, even on week long wilderness trips,I may not even take my GPS.Dont need the ext. anntena for my truck ,but maybe down inside of a boat you might.
  7. Thanks ,I like that kind of research.I find Garmin products have alot of gadgets that don't really work properly. If you want a good altimeter / barometer, get a Thommen ,they are temperature compensated, and used by mountaineers all over the world, and if you need a compass that works get a Suunto,Silva or Bruton, not a Garmin.I wonder if all of Garmins high end marine products have as many issues as their hand held line does?
  8. 76 csx floats and can take an external antenna as well.Vista has or had a slow speed odometer bug, maybe someone can confirm if its been totaly fixed yet,Vista also gets better battery life, and has a brighter night time screen.
  9. I remember reading another thread about about this, some people saying that after the 3.60 chipset update that their 60csx was getting a sat. fix quicker than before they updated.I didn't notice much change on my 76 csx, sat. fix times vary anyway,my 76 is pretty good. When I compare the fix times to my friend Vista hcx,the Vista might just beat it by a hair, and and only about 60% of the time. The perfect GPS does'nt exist.Big screen is nice, small size is nice too, maybe just get them both ???
  10. It still shows it listed under their maps in cartography, the place I got it from still sells it for $ 109, 2004 version CD with DEM.
  11. While all the new units have ,more features than the GPS 12,the map screen on the 12 will show you where the cache is relative to your position, just follow the track or use a hand held compass and follow the bearing to it.The newer units do have maps, and an electronoic compass, but a hand held compass is more accurate and you dont relly need those maps for geocaching.
  12. It will find caches just as good as a newer one, never had a problem with my GPS 12 ,used the map screen and a hand held compass.I really like the 12 style cases, wish they still used them.
  13. Its correct name is "The travel Bug".Its tied to the compass, just like the red pointer arrow you can select in some data fields.Turn off the compass ,and the travel bug is gone ,and the red pointer arrow will be frozen, also if you select track up on the sattellite page ,it wont show up.It will actually show the dirrection you are facing, you dont have to be moving.
  14. Check out gpscentral.ca ,Calgary Alberta Canada, way cheaper than any local stores around my area.Ordered twice from them, fast and no problems.
  15. I use my GPS 90% for navigation,I rarely do geocaching ,I just follow this forum to pick up useful imformation.I will quite often use the track log while driving around on logging roads, marking the different road junctions as I go ,then useing track back on the way back if I need to.It basically makes a route of your travels for you to follow back,or transfer to your map on your computer later.Since all Garmin topo maps show very few trails, you could use it to map trails too.For geocaching I dont think you would use it,most geocaching Ive done ,the caches are only a short distance from the car.My GPS 12 gets me to a cache just as quick and easy as my 76csx does.
  16. I don't know, but I can tell you one thing, the way Garmins new products and software releases are going ,I am not going to be lining up to try any of them.
  17. Seems to work fine on my 76csx.What map is CN AUS? I have topo Canada, topo USA 2008,and USA National Parks West.Get the same screens as you ,the search takes about 5 sec. and no lockup.Thats with 3.60 unit and 3.00 chipset software.
  18. I have 3.50 still on my computer, its 2.02 meg..but I have not had any oroblems and so have not tried to revert my unit back to see if it will work or not. What kind of problems are you having?
  19. On the altimeter times there are also 2 times that dont work out, maybe they are only intended to be approximations, due to space requirments for the print.
  20. Pressure plot, either Barrometric or ambient pressure.
  21. Can someone verify if I am right or wrong about this.Select either barometer mode, set the horizontal scale to 6 hrs, that is 6hrs for 4 squares on the graph? That means one square should be 1.5hrs. 1.5x4=6.Now press enter and in the lower left it shows 1 square=1hr???Now scroll the red cursor over and take the time reading from one grid lines, now scroll over to an adjacent grid line and note the time, the differance is 1.5hrs between grid lines not 1hr as shown. All other horizontal barrometer scale settings work out fine, but not this one.
  22. I dont think it improves accuracy, but it does improve reception.I have only used it on one hike just to try it out,it just becomes another piece of gear to carry so I dont take it any more ,but as I said it does improve reception if that is your problem. You dont need to clip it to your hat and look like an idiot, just clip it to your pack strap. With regard to grounding,no,it works shows noticable improvment inside a fiberglass boat, where's the metal grounding their?
  23. I have the Garmen mcx-25 antenna and it does make a differance if in deep forest .Sometimes I will either put my 76csx on my side to record a track log or else put it in the top pouch of my pack, and using the antenna means not having to worry about losing the signal. When hiking I have noticed that while holding the unit down by my side it will somtimes lose a signal. The antenna weighs nothing. You can also see a noticable differance inside your home sometimes almost double the signal strenght.
  24. Sorry ,correction to the above statement, when your declination scale on your compass is set to your declination. The N on your compass will point TRUE north ,the NEEDLE will be pointing to MAGNETIC North.
