  1. And as a quick warning, DON'T try and use a Sandisk Ultra II 1 GB card, make sure it's the "plain" old micro card. The Ultra cards WON'T work in the 60 (76) series. A few folks have found this out the hard way. Rick
  2. I was using a Legend for hiking, this was before I started doing any caching. I found the same problem, loss of signal under almost any tree cover, made it close to wothless. I finally gave up on the Legend and bought a 60 CSx. If I were you I'd take a close look at the 60 C(S)x series. Rick
  3. Just make sure you get a "regular" 1 GB Micro card, not an "Ultra II" if you are going with Sandisk. I've seen reference to big problems with the Ultra II cards. I understand that the Ultra II is the high speed version version and does NOT work in A GPS unit right now (unless something has changed in the last couple of weeks.) Rick
  4. One thing I've learned is that on the "net" for every report of a problem there are at least 10 people out there with things that are working just fine. People just don't post to say "my unit is working fine". That's not to say there aren't some problems with the 60 C(S)x series, but they are being worked. I've got a CSx and have been "bitten" by both the altitude and (WAAS) loss of signal after a tunnel. The altitude problem seems to have been fixed, and right now I'm not missing the WAAS. I still think it's a great unit, especially in the woods, I'd buy it again! Rick
  5. I've had Energizer 2500 mAh rechargeabe batteries last me up to 13 hours on a charge in a 60 CSx. I also use them in my digital camera, and swear by them. Rick
  6. It depends on which map software you are using. Rick
  7. 2025 is the current limit imposed by Garmin. It used to be one thousand something and they upped it a couple months after release. I'd like to think they will update it again when the 2 GB cards start to appear. Does anyone know why Garmin has imposed this limit?? Rick
  8. I'm using 2500 amp hour Energizers and did a walk through some deep woods today that lasted about 2 hours and noticed nothing unusual. I just turned the unit (60CSx) on in the house with the same batteries and have a full 4 bars with no fluctuation. I also ran a set of batteries last weekend for 13+ hours under changing conditions, but that was with 2.70/2.40. Today was the first use with 2.50. Rick
  9. THANK YOU!!!! I don't know how you figured that out though, Garmin sure has kept it a secret. Rick
  10. 1 GB is currently the largest available, and a lot of folks here are using that size. The limitation currently seems to be more the number of maps that can be loaded......... 2025! Rick
  11. I'm not sure what the question really is. I've loaded about 900 MB on a 1 GB card through my 60 CSx, and it is working just fine. I have not tried to reload or change any of the data. I loaded through the GPS since my reader came in a couple days after the card. I guess what I'm now wondering, is this something that some of us may see when we try to change data sometime down the road. Rick
  12. I'd suggest turning your electronic compass off if you haven't already. I had the same problem with a 60 CS, and that solved it. When I got my 60 CSx that was the first thing I did. It only takes a couple minutes to turn on and calibrate the compass if I need it. Rick
  13. The 2.62 Beta firmware allows 2000+ maps. So does the 2.60 version of firmware. Rick
  14. You need to update your firmware. The limit has been updated to just over 2000, I can't recall the exact number. I've currently got most of Topo East, plus selected cities from Topo West loaded totaling something like 1990 maps. (60 CSx, 1 GB card) Rick
  15. A lot of the thermal coating they use on building windows really interfere with any kind of electronic signals. At work I can get a strong cell signal right outside my office window, but almost nothing right inside, a matter of a couple feet. Rick
  16. Well, I did read the message, if not the title! East coast USA, plus the Los Angeles, CA area and the Tucson, AZ area, worked out to be about 1990 segments (maps) and about 450 MB. Rick
  17. You didn't mention what model of GPS you have. I thought I saw a thread about one type having problems with a 128 MB size. I have a 60CSX and my 1 GB card came in last night. This morning I swapped it out with the 64 MB card that came with the GPS and dropped most of the East Coast Topo maps on the 1 GB card with NO problems at all. Rick
  18. Actually using Mac OS X you have to actually dismount the device before disconnecting. If you don't the computer gives you a "nasty" message, and your data is usually corrupted. I almost panicked the first time a PC user just pulled my memory stick out of his USB port!! Rick
  19. I've always liked track up. When I'm coming to a turn, either in the car or on foot, with track up there is no doubt about the direction of the turn. Rick
  20. I've got a 1 GB Sandisk card coming in tomorrow and was wondering, if needed, how does one go about reformatting to FAT32? Using XP and with the card in the reader/writer open "My Computer" where you should see a list of "devices with removable storage". Right click on the reader drive and choose "format" from the dropdown menu. Choose "FAT32" and away you go. I also read somewhere in here that you should create a file named "Garmin" on the card so that when you download maps via the card reader, Mapsource will see the card as a "GPS unit". You probably don't have to do that if you plan to download maps directly to your handheld. Cheers, Olar Thanks, I was hoping it might be something that easy. I'm basically a Mac guy, but use my wife's PC for all the GPS stuff. When UPS delivers the card tomorrow I'll see how it goes. Rick

  22. What Vlad said! I has this problem with my 60 CS until I turned the electronic compass off. When I got my CSx turning the compass off was the fist thing I did, if I need it its easy to turn it on, till then......... Rick
  23. It's to bad that the rebate ends today (4/9). I've got one on order from Amazon which I'm giving strong consideration to canceling since it seems everyone but them has the 1 GB mini's in stock. The still show mine as shipping in JUNE!! Rick
  24. I have also gotten #35 and "D"s on my CSx. And yesterday going through the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel I also got the satellite lock out "bug" and had to turn the unit off and on to re-aquire, I was ready for that one though! Rick
  25. I believe the bottom line is that your computer will supply power through the USB cable, almost like it would through an AC converter or auto plug. What it won't do is charge the batteries, but it shouldn't be draining them either. Rick
