  1. Hi...I've been looking at the Silver Ranger Ultra compass to carry in addition to GPS for out west hunting, Mostly Washington State. If GPS goes, I'd feel better with a magnetic hand held. I've been looking on EBAY for them used and while there I see there is pretty much a copy of one. It don't say where its made but I'll assume its and asian like everything else today. Have any of you ever used these units, or copyies and if so how are the built, good, bad, pathetic? I have a nice compass here that I've used for years, but saw these, and with the mirror thought, they may be worth the price which is cheap...... Its the model you will see on there if you just type compass then go to hunting/camping selection.... It has the mirror , site line, etc... $10.00 with shipping is a big different from $60.00. Mag north don't know the difference..... Your input most apprecaited....... SwampYankee
  2. 64 with a fresh quad bypass. If the grim reapers is gonna get me it will be enjoying myself. I do carry cellphone. If I buy the farm having fun, I'll have a smile on my face. Not gonna buy it on the couch. SwampYankee
  3. They are $99 dollars at the Walmart here.... I think its a decent price he is asking. I like my Etrex yellow and Legend C. Swampy
  4. The sun was out today here in CT, temp up to 50, so we decided to try and find our first cache. It was cache GCH71V Big difference between how the crow flys and how people travel, in this case path of least resistance but most of the snow had melted and we could get to the side of the ice. 50 minutes later we were standing at our first cache. A large ammo box, well hidden with books in it which my wife brought 2 to exchange. Pretty nice feeling... We forgot the camera so will return for a picture next to it. Hope to do with all of them. We wanted a hobby for additional excersize....This one will do it....We love the outdoors so fits our plans. We have a Etrex Yellow Basic and Etrex Legend C. Today it was the Yellow ones turn. Took me right to it and it was 1.65 mile out in the woods of lots of little hills and pines so no way to stumble over it, plus it was up in the trees. Can't wait for the sun to come up tomorrow...Last day of sun for awhile so we have 6 more picked out to track down. Age here is 64 for me, and enjoying every minute of it. Thanks guys and gals for promotoing such a great little hobby. SwampYankee & CalamintyJane
  5. I've got that one also and really enjoy it, but I was looking for a few more. I like to messa round with different software.... Gives me something to do while I wait for the next nice day to go caching. Thanks for reply.
  6. Was wondering which program you guys use on your computer to keep track of your cache finds? Is there any software written just for it or are you just using a spreadsheet type program. I'm sure somene must of wrote a program to keep track of your finds..... SwampYankee
  7. If it isn't sold, I'll take it. Sent a private email also.
  8. Thanks guys, he went out today and bought a Garmin, Etrex on sale at a local gun shop. Guess it had been returned by a hunter for a different....He paid $70 bucks for it. Looks like I have a hunting partner now.... Tnx for replys.... SwampYankee
  9. My son just informed me he would like to GeoCache also. He is looking for a used Garmin or Magellan for a reasonable price. He surprised me on this one. He was asking me and and I was thinking legend or magellan type. His thoughts were, maybe folks were upgrading at christmas and wanted to sell off and old one. Even his girlfriend seem pretty interested so perhaps even to. Thanks in advance. Swampy
  10. Thanks again for all the great input..... A friend of my wifes let me use her Ifinder. No other letters on it. It seems to do the job, but figure if I'm going to purchase one myself, I'd move up to whatever else. I like the style of them and big screen for sure. Small cameras, cellphones etc drive me nuts.... bigger is better for tired eyes. I'm looking at everything you guys suggested and will go from there. Sure appreciate all the help. I just singed on here 4 days ago and I'm impressed with all the great information here and help form others. Ok, back to reading reviews..... SwampyYankee
  11. Tnx for reply. I was not aware that the color Magellen Meridian was hard to see in the sunlight. That would defeat my purpose with lousy eyes to start with. have you used either of the Magellen Meridians Gold or Platinums and how would you rate those? And I guess if I'm barking up the wrong tree and you know something better that would suit my needs as mentioned , what would any of you suggest. Again, Thanks in advance.... SwampYankee
  12. Hi...I'm looking at getting a new or used Magellen Meridian Color unit. I also considered the Gold unit. I'm looking at it as being slightly bigger than the rest so may be easier for me to read with eyes that are not very good at close range. I see lots of input on GPS units and would like some on these two units. I guess I want a do all or most of it unit. I've been using a friends Ifinder and like it but want the extra bells and whitles. I usually end up getting them as some point, so why not the first time around....LOL.... Your input would be most appreciated. SwampYankee WA1NLA
