  1. Another easy way it to add KLM to Google Earth. Zoom in a little and it will show you every cache on the planet. Just follow your route and it will show you all of them along the way. the closer you get, the more accurate it will be, but it still has a built in offset.... But it will show you what rest areas to hit. I've hit them all on Rt 81 from Connecticut to SC. All easy grabs and a nice break to stretch the legs.....

Fact, the KLM file for google is on this site......

  2. This episode of GeoSnippits is a bit different. Instead of our normal format we take you straight out onto the road for a nine minute Day of Geocaching. Here our hair and clothes are not neat and tidy 'cuz when you go geocaching you get dirty, scraped up by briers and bushes, tired after long treks through dense woods, that kind of thing. In this video you will see examples of each of the known sizes and many different types of geocaches just as they were found. It is a sun up to sun down geocaching experience.

    -HHH :(

Great service with the video to newbies. Fact, with the temps up this way lately and all the ice on the ground, I've been doing my geocaching thru your videos. I'm sure anyone just starting is thrilled get this introduction, before they hit the trail.

    Much appreciated.

  3. They get you pretty close, usually 20 feet and closer. You then need to get into the mode of the hider. Where would I put one of these. After you find a few you will soon think like the person who hid it. Not likely its in the water, althought I have found one there that drove me nuts. Usually on the edge, in a tree, stump, attached to a dock, what have you. Start with the bigger caches, not the small micros. They can hide those very well. Pick easy caches by the numbers they post as to easy or hard. It can be frustrating at first until it all makes sense...Then you can almost walk up on them as your brain shifts to zero in mode.

They all give pretty much the same accuracy except with better antenna will get you closer under cover.

    Thats my 2 cents worth.

  4. Magellan Meridian Color GPS unit w/5.40 Firmware, wrist strap, Genuine Magellan soft case (attaches to belt), 16MB Magellan SD card, windshield mount, power/data cable, cigarette lighter power cable (plus whatever else I can find) $125 plus UPS shipping.

Prices do not include UPS Shipping. Email me if interested or pics wanted.

REDUCED!!! $100 plus shipping from 30165!

Well worth the price in my opinion. I have one and really like it. If some was getting into the hobby and was going to get and entry level GPS, this has it all over them. I use it plus a Garmin 60csx and a 60 C. I think this would be one heck of a first GPS and could go for along time. some features dated but it will sure get the job done and why I keep mine for backup or to let friends come with me and geocache also. I use it on my motorcycle also and it does a nice job....

  5. Garmin GPS60csx

PRO's Rock solid, Trouble free. I used it for geocaching, travel, quads travel, horse travel, works great in all kinds of cover. Good company do due business with it you need service also.

Cons, I wish the screen as as bright as my Garmin 60C but its still very usable.

It has all the bells and whistles I would ever need and then some. It it could make me 20 years younger that would make it perfect.

  6. Whats the game plan in the winter when the water freezes in the PVC pipe and cracks? Interesting idea for sure but myself with 2 herniated disc, it leaves me out. Most out there are looking for fun, rather than a job for the day. Then again, my battery operated drill, small pump attached,150 feet of garden hose and wala

cache pops to surface. OK, I'm in....... SwampYankee

The cache is a 6inch wide by 8 foot long piece of PVC pipe that is set vertical a foot in the ground with concrete. At ground level I drilled a 1/4 inch hole. The actual cache is a 5 ½ inch wide, water proof cylinder that has 3 inches foam on the top and is in the bottom of the 8ft PVC tube. The cache is 300 yards from a road and there is a creek 50 yards from the cache sight. Since the container in non-ferrous and has no ‘grab points’ you would need to float the cache to the top. The 6in x 8ft cylinder has a volume of about 10,800 cubic inches so after ‘corking the hole’ it will take around 45 gallons of water to float it to the top. Yes I know I’m not very nice.

Also, I glued real bark to the outside of the tube so it blends in well.

  7. Thank you so much for all the information! We did pay over $100 for it new it included the car charger and case. Maybe not the best deal, but live and learn I guess.

I also got a the Magellan MapSend WorldWide Basemap. But it came with a disclamier that it won't work with XP with Service Pack 2 installed. So.... I'm not sure if it's going to do me any good.

    We're setting it up now.

I'm excited for our first hunt.

Good luck on your first hunt. I have 3 GPS here and I purchased the Meridian Gold about 2 years ago and really liked it. Its easy to read with the large screen, I have big hands and poor eye site yet I can read it without my glasses and the larger buttons feel great in my hands. It gets satellites very well under cover and using it in geocaching its a great unit. I have a Garmin 60C and a Garmin 60CSX and have not problem taking the Meridian Gold over one of those. Each has features I like better in each one, but I like all 3 of these. I used them more for trail riding and hiking than anything else. It was a top of the line unit back when it still in my opinion is a far better buy than entry level units by garmin or magellan... For geocaching. The color one I don't care for in daylight and found the black and white one better. Then again, I'm not thrilled with the screen brightness on my 60CSX either. The 60C screen is small but very good in daylight. Again, each has its plus and minus. factors.... There are alot of web sites with good info on them and how to get more out of them. Just google them...

  8. Check out the garage sale forum on this site. Good deals pop up there all the time. Do a search on here of the forums for the one your looking at and these guys and gals will pretty much fill you in on a specific model.

A good popular used one, will get you most if not all your money back if you want to try another one, and we all seemed to need to try a lot of them. I still have 3 of them. Each has a feature I like a little better than the other one. All were bought used and with the extra ones I can bring a friend along ot make the next victim of Geocaching.

  9. Sorry anethema, that particular response was meant for SwampYankee :D ,

I totally agree vfrpilot and when others have posted GPSs for far too much money I have a few times jumped in and posted links to good prices.

In this case though the price difference is $40 plus shipping which would make it $50-60 more. Thats over a 50 percent increase.

All in all thank you anyways for tryin to help, it is always better to be more informed than less.

    Thanks!

Edit: BTW it wasn't me who suggested you were stepping on :o

    anethema,

    I'm not "stepping on" anyone.

I've used gps's for over a decade & was getting ready to jump to the Nuvi series for the Jeep & pickup so the 60c can stay in my pack.

I was shopping around / inquiring here as to pros/cons on various models - Garmin of course as they have always been good to me as well.

Sorry, I always pass on the knowledge regarding price & availability. Others have did so for me in many different instances and saved me money & headaches.

Yes, factor in shipping (although shipping can very often be found free) & its a decent grab; but again.. that should be an informed choice... and people in this area [of the forum] are often newbies... who could use a little help.

Anyway, I'm off my soapbox & don't want this to turn into a debate - please don't misinterpret my steadfastness, but I will continue to pass on my findings...

    Be well & safe.

Here I am, front and center. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. This a garage sale forum. To the best of my knowledge, one can bargain for the best price, or pay asking price, what ever there little heart desires. As I said, I though it was a decent deal for a used unit. Price wise, there are plenty of them on ebay way below list. I assume you felt you were helping out the buyer, a fine a noble thing to do, while I thought I was defending the seller asking a fair price. Right or wrong...no damage done.

  10. I agree on this one. Even if they are 130 brand new, you gotta pay for shipping etc.

I have PMed him because if he will send it to me for $90 shipped i save myself 50 dollars or so over a new one.

Have you ever had a product that has worked well through a 1 year warranty fail after for no reason? I'm not sure this has ever happened to me. No reason for something to work for a year then fail due to a manufacturers defect. Thats why companies bilk so many people with those extended warranties. They wouldn't sell them if they almost ever had to pay out on them. That is also why, for the most part, only suckers buy them.

Either way I am still interested in this. I have any garmin mapsource product you could imagine and so for $90 I am essentially getting a Nuvi 250. (only diff is the preloaded maps)

Its available HERE, new, with the Garmin warranty for only 129.00 ?! :D

Then again on the other hand, if someone only has 90 bucks to spend this deal saves that person 50 bucks. Garmin is very good about fixing any of there GPS units. I've sent them use ones I've purchased and they have replaced them with new ones. The 129 + shipping makes it 140 or more depending on how fast you want it. Why step on this person. Some one will purchase it or they will not. If your really shopping price, heck EBAY will beat about anyone if one takes the time to look for a deal. I thinks its a bit insulting to someone just trying to sell an items at a reasonable price. If they want it for less, let the person bargain with them.

Garmin is excellent on repairs even out of warranty. Thats why I stick with them for GPS both handheld and in the car. Good company. Good luck.

  12. I was looking for a geocaching/street GPS in the $300 range. In my research it looks at though I will be better off to get two separate GPS units, hopefully for not too much over $300, or $400 max. For on road city trips I am thinking about a Garmin Nuvi 350 or 260. Are they out-of-the-box ready for a road trip? Which is better, or is there a better one for less than $200?

For geocaching I am thinking about buying a Garmin Legend or Vista HCX. It looks as though the only difference is the electronic barometer/compass. Are they out-of-the-box ready for geocaching?

Is it necessary to have topo or other ad-on maps? Is there an option that would allow me to buy just one GPS keeping the price in the same range or lower. I live in rural Central Pennsylvania and plan to only use the geocaching GPS in a handful of counties and the street one in a handful of states.

I have both the GPS 60 csx and the Hcx. I prefer the 60 csx for myself because its a larger case, bigger buttons and screen. For me, that means I can use it without my glasses. That is a big plus for me. I like the HCX also but I don't like the small size. Pretty much size wise the same as my Garmin 60 C. If you have small hands and size do matter, then that may be the way to go. They offer the CSX for $275 all over EBAY and these are new units. Both good units, you will no go wrong with either of them. Both will all you want for geocaching out of the box, and them some. They both have a lot of bells and whistles I don't use, but nice to know their there if I do want or need them.

    Good luck

  13. I have one and really like it. I have a Garmin Map 60 CSX also and do not hesitate to take the Meridian Gold with me. Very good unit. I also used it in my car and it does a great job. I have sold off a lot of them, but not the Meridian gold. Easy to use and I often let friends join in with me hunting for them. I don't hink you would be sorry. Price is the only X factor. That was the cream of the crop at one time......

  14. They are a problem here in Connecticut also. Both the large rocky mountain ticks and the tiny deer ticks. Fact I'm about 30 miles from Lyme where the Lyme Disease got its name. I use the deet and change cloths as soon as I get home. Usually put them outside. A warm shower and good check is about all you can do. Even them I've ended up pulling out 3 so far this year that either I missed or they were in other clothes and got me. A side thought is my cat goes out hunting all night and comes in will jump up on the couch to be petted. Some may be jumping off him also.... We have horses, dogs, cats etc and they are a concern. Careful inspection is the best bet.... Geo

  15. I recently picked up a Map60CSX. Really like the unit but ran into a problem today. I have the older

version 3.00 Topo. 3 disc. It worked perfect with my Legend C. I found a problem with it wanting to only search com, 1, 2, 3 or 4 but nothing for USB. It knows of USB as its in the help files. Do any of you know if there is a utility file download to address this? It does pop up in box that it knows I have a CSX but it don't seem to show it. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. This is the version with no lock on it so thats not the problem. Tnx again. Swampy

  16. Well, I have 5 GPS. Like to shop EBAY...2 Magellens, 3 Garmins. Truthfully, all trouble free. But from reading the forums here all the time, if there is a problem, Garmin is the company you want to be with. Magellan, seems to be a crap shoot in the type of service you get. Dirty contacts can happen, or a leaking battery, but you would of seen that on the battery change. Could be compressed to much or the loose cable. I'd do like another poster said and just call Garmin and see what they suggest. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

  17. Thanks for the additional information on what else will work with the CSX. I see if come to life off the USB off the computer but never gave any thought that others would power it off the USB connection. Down side, I don't have any of those either. All my 12volt power cords were for my Meridian Gold and Color Marine GPS for traveling. Odd ball conection on them also. I have two of them and was tempted to put a different connector on one of them. Never really looked into the USB connectors. Thanks again for the additional info. This board is one of the best sources of info out here for GPS of any type. Tnx SwampYankee

  18. I agree, Garmin Service is great. They get enough on their products to give this after the sale service. That works for me, and it must them, or they wouldn't be doing it. Just the great service reviews in this one thread will come back to them many times over. I have 2 Magellens and 2 Garmins, and no comparision between the two companies for service, Garmin hands down. I called to get my Garmin 60 C repaired. Beyond the warrenty period. They sent me a new one.. I gave that to my son and then bought another one anyhow. Since then, four of my geocaching buddies have bought Garmin, also because of service. I don't see how they are loosing. I think its a well planned out and working program.

  19. I have the USB cable, but they tell me there is a 12 power adapter available for it. Or just a power cable. I want to use it in the car while wandering about but off the batteries. Tnx in advance. SwampYankee

Just go to your local electronics store and buy a USB car power adapter. Anyone should work just fine as long it it conforms to the USB power standard of 5 volts.

Thanks very much, I'll check it out tomorrow.....
