  1. Yeah. I order a set of protectors for my Legend before a trip and they were here when I returned. Three pack of extras, too. They are cut about a quarter of an inch too small in each direction. Saw the posts about replacements. I'll wait a bit and then send an email. I don't have the basic Etrex and thought maybe they were cut for it instead of the Legend. We'll see. Looks like everyone is getting good service from them.
  2. Just ordered mine. Thanks for the info and the link. I've done a face plant or two while hiking with my GPS and it's only luck that the screen hasn't been scratched yet. So I'm reading the writing on the wall and getting it protected.
  3. I just lost a GPS and such a warning might have resulted in it being returned. However, I am waiting for the Etrex Legend version to be "updated" for the 2.41 version I currently have loaded in my replacement Legend.
  4. Thanks TeddyP. I love having the kids on these cache hunts with me. I feel bad when the hunts take a turn for the difficult. I'm afraid the kids will lose their interest and not join me. So far, the kids have been pretty good sports.
  5. quote:Now you know what that lanyard is there for. Wrap it around your wrist, and you'll not loose your GPS when the legs are tired. Absolutely, but whether the lanyard is around your neck or around your wrist, if you are leaning over to help a little girl get burrs out of her socks and shoes, that GPS seems to just dangle in the way...but, perhaps better in the way than lost forever...am I right?
  6. The details are posted on the cache page http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=29429. In a nutshell, the hunt for the two caches preceeding the loss were so exhausting for my daughter that by the time we had made it back to the car and I realized I had left it behind, there was no way I could ask her to return with me. I couldn't return that night as we live several miles away from the cache and it was getting dark when I realized the GPS had been left behind. I did post the loss as you will see if you visit the page above. As we were leaving the cache, we passed a number of people heading in the direction that I had left the GPS, so I was relatively pessimistic that it would be there if I was able to return. My brother made an attempt later but with no luck. It was a most unfortunate turn of events, but I learned that I need to hold on to the GPS in the future and not lay it down. Thanks for your interest.
  7. I had to replace my Etrex Legend when I left it behind during a geocache find with my exhausted daughter (what a bad father, she is such a good trooper and I absolutely wore her out to the point that I had to decide to abandon the GPS I had left behind or lose a daughter). While visiting the Garmin site to download the latest software, I discovered that are rebating $50 for the Legend, Vista, and Summit. The rebate is good for purchases between 30 August and the end of the year. Here is the link to the rebate form: http://www.garmin.com/whatsNew/currentpromotions/FiftyDollarRebate.pdf
  8. Before receiving a note from Garmin saying they would send me the rubber gasket and adhesive, I went to Orchard Supply Hardware and purchased some adhesive to reattach the rubber gasket. I bought "Rubber Adhesive" manufactured by Devcon. I don't have the original box, so I can't say what it's made of. But it has set a very good bond when I followed the directions. They instruct to apply the adhesive to both surfaces and let them stand for approximately 5 minutes before joining. After joining, they instruct leaving it for an hour before using. Full bond strength achieved in about 6 hours. Excess can be rubbed off, but the two surfaces bonded seem to be tight.
  9. I just received a reply from Garmin. They confirmed that I had voided the warranty by my entry to fix my Etrex Legend. They did say that they were putting a replacement gasket and (adhesive)tape in the mail. They've been very responsive to the (few) problems I've had.
  10. I, too, suffered a "tipover" with my Etrex Legend in my pocket (actually fell out of the boat while loading it onto a trailer). I was only in the water for a moment and only around a meter (due to the belly flop entry). My GPS acted like yours did; working intermittently and then, finally, not at all (within the course of a day). Believing that the situation would be remedied when the water evaporated, I left the unit out in the sun for the entire next day (to reduce the probability of water droplets on the circuitry and to improve the possibility of the evaporation of moisture through whatever small hole that allowed it to enter in the first place). At the end of the day, I could still see a lot of moisture in the case and the unit would not turn on at all. Since I was certain that Garmin would consider my "tipover" to void the warranty, and I needed to use it for some night time navigation, I decided to enter the unit and remove the moisture myself. Using a pocket knife, I carefully separated the gasket from the unit. I mildly cut the gasket in a couple of places. I separated the case and removed the remaining moisture. I reassembled the case and the gasket (without glue, which I did not have). The unit works perfectly. I have documented this to Garmin, asking if they would honor the warranty (despite my entry) or send or sell me a replacement gasket. They've not replied (in contrast to a previous warranty issue regarding the display, which they handled quite well).
  11. I use the IOGear USB Serial Adapter (GUC232A) and have had equally good results. I have used it on a laptop running WIN98SE, a laptop running WIN2000, and a desktop running WIN XP. In all cases I was running Mapsource and NG Topo! software. The GPS is a Garmin Etrex Legend. No problems and I've been running it since April.

  13. I was experiencing the same problem. Seemed unrelated to battery condition. Usually occurred when the unit was first turned on and went away after I cycled through the displays. Eventually the condition was occurring occasionally when the unit was on a while. Finally, I contacted Garmin to see if the problem had been reported and might be associated with one of the firmware updates. I sent a picture of the condition. Garmin replied that it sounded like a hardware issue and sent me an RMA #. It took less then a week to repair (under warranty). Haven't had the problem occur again (although it has only been a week since the repair).
  14. I purchased mine for a trip my family is planning for this summer through the west (USA, that is). I found the link to this site when I logged onto Garmin to make sure my softwares were all up to date. I've only logged 4 caches since I first started, but I'm hooked and I think I've hooked my brother, too.
