  1. I'd reccomend either the etrx or etrex legend. I'm also in London Ontario. I got my etrex at Wal Mart but you may find better prices on line. Good luck and be prepared to become addicted!
  2. whooo hoooo....this is a much better way of doing it. I was getting queries for mulitiple overlapping areas which produced a lot of duplicates. Much more efficient this way and less server time too I'm sure.
  3. So all these queries would originate from my home co ords..that does make more sense now....I'm going to mess with it and see what I come up with....thanks for the quick response.
  4. What is the best way to build a series of pocket queries to avoid duplicates and to maximize the number of caches? I have seen comments about using the date placed to avoid duplicates but I can't for the life of me see how this would work.
  5. Thanks for the quick responses....the cache will definetly be replaced but might not be in the exact same spot.
  6. I've just had a cache muggled and I'm not sure which option I need to choose to notify cachers that this cache isn't available at the moment.....should it be disable or archive?
  7. I've been using cachemate for a couple of months now and never thought about it only showing me the last log. Just shows you how informative it is to read the forums. Thanks for the tip.
  8. I've just started to make my own sig item. I hope I'm not embarrassing myself.... Unfortunately I can't seem to master the art of posting them here.
  9. I can't speak for anyone else but I joined OGA to show support for geocaching in Ontario. I think geocaching needs a voice in the province and you have to appreciate the people who so generously give of their time to promote and support the geocaching community.
  10. When I update my gsak data base using quearies one of the caches that I have placed gets added but not the logs that are associated with it. The same thing happens when I try to update it using the download waypoints option on the cache listings page. My other cache gets updated ok so I'm at a loss as to what is wrong. Any suggestions?
  11. Obviously the geocache hides are safe but what happens when unsuspecting geocachers start poking around in live electrical boxes thinking they're cache sites? I worked in the electrical trade for 30+ years and I've seen some strange stuff. I think if these types of caches gain popularity that it is only a matter of time till someone gets hurt.
  12. I've seen some pictures of caches where the container has been some sort of electrical box. I'm just wondering how smart or safe this is. From the point of safety. How long will it be before someone gets seriously hurt dismantling a live electrical fixture thinking it's a geocache? Secondly, it would seem to me that they have to be placed on private property, which I believe is in violation of the rules. I realize that we take a certain risk in our endeavours to go after caches and if you choose to dismantle an electrical fixture you're on your own but I just don't think it's good for geocaching in general. I'm wondering about how you see this.

    Camo Tape

Thanks Tom, I was able to find it in Canadian Tire...it was 7.98 for a roll.
  14. Is it ok to place a cache as a micro have it approved and then change it to a regular? In reading some of the posts I've seen that some folks take along a micro to hide if they should find an ideal place. That beats carrying a loaded ammo can everywhere you go. Are there any regulations on changing the container size after a cache has been approved? Of course it would have to be changed in the listing as well so folks know what they're looking for. Just curious.

    Camo Tape

Thanks folks....I got it at Cdn Tire on Wonderland. Would you believe I looked in Princess Auto, Wal mart, Cdn Tire, Forest City Surplus with no luck. I was beginning to think it was a mail order item. What a great resource this! Thanks again.

    Camo Tape

Thanks, I was in Cdn Tire yesterday but I guess I didn't look hard enough. I'll give it another shot.

    Camo Tape

Anyone know where to purchase camo tape in London Ontario?
  18. I don't believe I said that "no one would do it" I'm saying that even if it becomes mainstream you're still going to take the same evasive actions to protect the cache. Of course there are folks out there who willfully destroy whatever they can get their hands on. I don't see that as a reason to keep geocaching as some kind of secret society. I may be a newcomer but I'm not naive. I happen to think that geocaching is just about the perfect activity for people of all ages. I think it would be a shame not to share it with anyone who's interested.
  19. I'm a newcomer and very enthusiastic about the benefits of geocaching. I don't think that you can assume all muggles are going to do as you say and plunder a cache. I think it's human nature to be curious when you see someone doing odd things. I really don't see the problem if geocaching becomes mainstream and people realize what it is your doing wandering the woods. You're still going to be aware of people watching you and avoiding going to the cache site to protect it's integrity aren't you? If geocaching gets cloaked in too much secrecy I think it gives people a reason to think it shouldn't be allowed in places like public parks etc. My personal opinion is that the more publicity the better. The more folks that become involved the more caches there will be to find and the game/sport/hobby/addiction will only get better.
  20. Right on! I consider a $40 cache to be a great deal. I can't go to a two hour concert for less. Two trips to the movies with my kid costs more than that. And all the cachers who visit the cache share in that value. Appreciative logs are worth a lot to me, compared to a plain ol' "TNLNSL". That's just me. If you like film canisters under rocks behind guardrails, place more. If you like stocked ammo cans 3 miles down the trail, place those. Place the kind of cache you most like to find. Think of it as a gift to your caching family. Would you give your favorite auntie a cross-threaded peanut butter jar covered in electrical tape, full of dollar-store barrettes, wrapped in a dead holly bush in front of an insurance office? Hey my auntie would go bananas for a cross threaded camo covered peanut butter jar filled with dollar store barrettes....LOL
  21. Ahhh silly putty....that's a great idea..and hotwheels and beading kits and polly pockets...what a great resource this is. I have to agree..it would be nice to see all that mc crap banned...I'd rather they left nothing than that stuff. I've also been thinking about some cheap things geocachers might like. Stuff they can throw in their packs....like inspection mirrors, compass, eyeglass wipes, eye glass kits, pens and pencils.
  22. I think a first aid kit is a great idea. 25 cents for a mag light eh? So much for equal or greater value! I am interested to see what people will leave in my cache. It sure would be nice if it were possible to raise the bar a bit. I'm wondering how many people would leave something good in a cache full of used mctoys? I'm trying to think of decent toys for kids. Anyone got some good suggestions for kid's toys?
  23. My two cents....as a newcomer it seems to me from reading threads here that there is some opposition to geocaching in certain areas. For that reason I believe that the more people that know about geocaching and what it's all about the better. The more people who become involved the less likelyhood of elected officials passing laws to ban it
  24. I'm fairly new to this as found my first cache back in November. I'm thankful to all those folks that took the time to place a cache. I don't think anyone really geocaches for the loot but it does make it a little more interesting especially for the little ones. I sometimes take my 4 year old grandaughter along and I would love for her to be excited about what she might find. Unfortunately so far she hasn't been impressed..lol I've found this thread interesting as I'm about to place my first cache. I've purchased an ammo can and btw I haven't seen any ammo cans in the 21 finds so far. It's been mostly peanut butter jars and tupperware. I would imagine those types of container would require a lot more maintenance. I want to leave a half decent FTF article but haven't come up with anything good yet. Of course I'm going to make sure there are some decent toys to bring smiles to the kiddies faces. I'm addicted no matter what...maybe it's the thrill, no matter how small, that I might actually find something useful. Perhaps if there was good swag in every one the anticipation would be less?
  25. Thanks so much for the responses....I think I got it figured out now. One thing I hadn't considered was leaving room for my own waypoints as Night Stalker pointed out. I'm still working on how to use to gsak to it's potential. That will come the more I use it I'm sure. I can't wait to get back out there!
