  1. Recently, I took my 4 year old daughter "treasure hunting" and we found a cache that had been raided, not by muggles, but by cache killers. The offenders took everything out of the ammo box, but left 3 crayons and a piece of paper that says "This cache has been killed." It was hard to explain to my little girl why someone would do this, but the experience made me wonder what exactly would be the best way to combat this? My guess is that the "killers" are looking for attention and seeing people talk about them would only encourage them. I decided to email the cache owner and tell them what happened and then log the find as if nothing was wrong. What do you guys think of this? Is there a better way to do it?
  2. I'm new at this, so maybe I'm asking a stupid question, but I was looking at some of the Garmin Mapsource software and MAN IS IT PRICEY! So I looked on eBay and found some people selling it used. Will used software work? I know that a lot of software has a key that once registered, renders the software useless to the next buyer. Is that the case with Garmin software? Also, if I must buy it new, where can I find it the cheapest?
  3. I ran across one of these a few days ago. It was damp inside and smelled BAD. I'm not sure if it was because of the container type or just a poorly sealed lid, but I've heard others say that the plastic coffee containers aren't up to the task. I'm new at this, though, so you can take my opinion for what it's worth.
  4. The Twit Podcast also directed me here! I'm still trying to talk my wife into buying me a GPS, but we've been doing some "Google Caching" with my nephews and it's a real blast! We just use Google Maps to give us a good idea of where to look and then we hit the road. We've found 6 out of 7 this way and it's convinced me that I definitely want to buy a GPS and do this more. I'm amazed at how accurate Google maps is. Their little marker has been spot on EVERY time. The only one we couldn't find didn't have many landmarks near it. We canvassed the area with 4 sets of eyes for half an hour but couldn't find it. We'll get that bugger as soon as we get a GPSr.
  5. I understand what you mean. I did the same thing, but got lucky and found it! I was pretty pumped and so was my daughter!
  6. What power supply works with the legend? Did you have to modify the phone power supplies for this or are the ready to go off the shelf? Any more info on this would be greatly appreciated.
  7. Ok, so I've decided to take the plunge and give geocaching a try. It looks like something I would have fun with and I really like the idea of a hobby that I can enjoy with my kids. Right now I'm trying to decide on which GPS to buy. I've been doing some lurking on these forums and reading different reviews. I think I've settled on a Garmin etrex Legend. I noticed that Tiger GPS has refurbished units. Has anyone bought a refurb? Is it a good idea to buy one? Any help would be appreciated.
